Illegal parties in America, past and present?

After travelling through Europe for five months and seeing how vibrant the illegal/squat party scene is there, especially psy parties, I've begun to wonder why this is somehing I've never really encountered back home. I consider myself someone who's generally in the know about what deviant things the kids are doing, but a true illegal party is something that's eluded me.

Of course, America is quite strict about such things in comparison with Europe and electronic music and alternative culture are not as widely appreciated, which explains the lack. I'm sure they're happening still, but certainly not on the scale of Europe and certainly not like they used to be.

I was far too young to see the real flourishing of the rave scene in the '90s, so I'm curious to hear some accounts from American rave scene veterans as to the nature and scale of ILLEGAL parties back in the day. I'm equally curious to hear people's evaluation of the illegal scene today.

I'm looking forward to hearing some input. :-) Thanks.

where do you live? the renegade scene is still alive and well in california (north and south) both indoors in warehouses/lofts and outdoors in forests/deserts/beaches/etc. it might not be quite as vibrant as it was 10 years ago but there is definitely still action. i hear of parties like this on the east coast sometimes as well, though i usually see them referred to as "outlaws". i assume this is their term for undergound illegal parties.

I live in Colorado and back in November of 2007 I went to a warehouse party out in Denver. The place was a business park during the day, and the specific warehouse the party was at was a veterinary shelter. It looked legit up front, signs with a name and phone number etc... but when you went around the back of the building and in the back door, the whole back room was set up as a rave. It was $10 to get in, no security what so ever and there was a kitchen counter with handles and red cups for people to make drinks. Kitchen sink, one single bathroom, it was like someone held a rave in the break room or something. The place doesn't throw shows anymore, some of their residents ended up gaining popularity and play other legit venues now. But it was definitely cool while it lasted.

I saw Ooah and edIT of the Glitch Mob play there, as well as Aaron Holstein (Vibesquad).

Another time in September 2008, I saw DJ Bam Bam play at a place called "Orange Cat" which in reality was an abandoned old house. The garage had a elevated stage for the deejay and a couch up above it for the light guy to sit. To enter, you had to go into the alley behind the house, pay the doorman and walk through the backyard, into the garage. Inside the garage was the kitchen, with a kitchen table and there was even a bathroom with a bathtub. Most of the kids I met there were from Wyoming, and since the EDM scene in Wyoming is pretty much non-existent, they were psyched to be at a real party. They were all dressed up, some even reminded me of the costumes from Party Monster and they were fucked on drugs. The backyard was all dirt with no grass and all these rolling kids were on the ground in a massive cuddle puddle, completely loving life. I only went their once, since it was in a pretty shady part of town so I'm not sure if it's still throwing parties.

Have you ever heard of Michael Alig and James St. James? They were some of the original "club kids" in NYC in the 80's and threw illegal parties everywhere. Check out the movie Party Monster. http://www.amazon.com/Party-Monster/dp/B0016MJ6T2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1259129259&sr=8-1

I have been to raves:
many parties under the GWB in ny
in Military Bunker in ny...
raves at a cemetery
into the woods off a highway
in crack house
in old subway tunnels
on a beach
abandoned buildings such as ( warehouse, schools, movie theather, insane asylum...)
one party we had a drum and base room in the old morge of a hospital...

ah the good ol days....all these parties where outlaws..

You shouldn't have a problem anywhere. There are certainly such gatherings all over here.

I've been to some awesome parties throughout my young adult days all over the Midwest. I could find one at any moment.

another CO kid here. as well as the warehouse party scene, during the summer there are tons of illegal parties out in the rocky mountain national parks. the forest service shows up pretty frequently actually, i'd say at maybe 10% of the parties i've been too, but that never seems to stop anyone from throwing another one next weekend..

I haven't heard much of anything in the Baltimore/DC area, but I probably don't know the right people. Anyone familiar with renegades in this area?

i'm also very interested in this...never heard of any cool parties in my area in a LONG time

very disappointing area, i can't wait to move.
