I think most doctors are idiots

I am having a bad day. My liver hurts, my hands are itchy, and I'm in opiate withdrawal from tianeptine.

I used to drink a lot (sometimes 24/7 for months at a time, sometimes much less). I also used and abused OTC steriods like superdrol, madol, methylstenbolone from 2007-2012. I finally stopped when my liver became extremely swollen and inflamed. The swelling and pain went down after months of abstinence. I went to the ER 3 times, had numerous blood tests, 2 ultrasounds and 1 CT scan. Every doctor has told me my liver is fine. Still, the pain returns every time I touch a drink, or take any amount of APAP. So I babied my liver for 2 years with not one drop of alcohol.

About 6 months ago, I went a little crazy with some RC stims, and had a series of grand mal seizures that landed me in the hospital for a week. I was told that while I had some acute kidney stress, that my liver was perfectly fine. I was even given IV APAP for pain (I broke my shoulder while seizing and they wouldn't give me opiates because I'm a drug addict). My wife ordered the doctors to stop the APAP anyway, but they assured that my liver is perfectly fine, my kidneys were recovering, and if anything, my brain was the only thing that could have been permanently damaged. Since then I became addicted to Tianeptine, and in the process of trying to deal with the WD, I had 2 pints of beer last night, and my freaking liver hurts this morning just like it did 2.5 years ago. My skin is only slightly itchy, and my liver is not noticeably swollen, but this is how it always starts.

I can't believe that I have permanent liver damage that none of these stupid doctors can find. Obviously, if I quit for more than 2 years, but my body still cannot tolerate alcohol, that would indicate permanent damage would it not? If I took these useless, worthless doctors at their word, I would probably end up dead.

The doctors also notified child services that I was an unfit parent because they found THC in my blood - even though the RC stims were undetected (mostly it was 4-benzylpiperidine - really weak stuff that doesn't seem to produce a high at any dose - just seizures). Now I get drug tested by the system, and this is why I have to take more toxic drugs like tianeptine to avoid detection, because I'm an addict not ready to get clean, but I would be fine smoking cannabis as that seems to be the only drug my beat-up 33 year old body can handle. I have read the tianeptine can affect the liver, but unlike alcohol and APAP, it doesn't seem to aggravate my condition at any dose - and, of course, the docs tell me I'm fine.

I've read posts around the web that tell a similar story to mine about liver pain, alcohol, and clueless doctors, and it makes no sense. What are the doctors missing? Could this be a form of acquired autoimmune hepatitis? It's clearly something and they keep telling me it's nothing. A friend of mine that I used to drink with (and who I often out-drank) died 3 years ago at 29 from cirrhosis, and I don't want to be next.

Can you describe your pain, and are you certain it's your liver and not not your pancreas- which also has issues with extreme alcohol consumption. I've known several heavy alcoholics who believed their livers were failing when I fact they had pancreatitis. Another idea to check into would be your colon, as it does go up and share a little space close to the liver, and perhaps your stomach as it too veers in that direction just under your rib cage. Just throwing that out there as other options for you to look into. Alcohol tends to have a systemic response, and negatively impacts so many other organs as well. I had a close friend die from esophageal cancer because of his drinking, and another who ended up having his colon removed.

I was a heavy drinker for 17 years and used to get my liver enzymes tested every couple of months and they always came back normal. Imagine my shock when I had to have a thoracic x-Ray 6 months after my last drink and my liver was enlarged.

Can you request a liver biopsy? Sorry, I'm out of suggestions on liver tests as you've had the Cadillac of tests already, aside from a biopsy, which if the others are negative I doubt they will do, but you can ask.

Also, if you're concerned for your health it would be in your best interest to stop using substances altogether, including alcohol.

Good luck- I hope you feel better!

Thanks so much - you could not have been more helpful than that. :) I haven't had beer since that night, and the pain faded slowly. As of right now, it's finally gone. I have more beer in the fridge, but I will not drink it. My body is telling me it does not want it, and it's time for me listen. Again. I'm more sure than ever that I did too much damage over the years, and there's no going back, even to being a moderate or occasional drinker. I'm OK with that.

I have chronic pancreatitis. From alchohol. The pain is unbelievable. It is unrelenting. It can happen anywhere from the middle of your stomach, to the left side and right side and into your back. Symptoms include extreme pain, nausea, increased pain with eating or drinking anything. Use chicken or beef broth in moderation to get your nutrients when having a pancreatic attack. It also can cause dizzyness because of insulin issues from the pancreas. Next time you have pain. Go to the er and when they draw your blood. Ask them what your lipase and amylase test results show. I can't remember a normal amylase level but lipase levels in the normal range are 20-59. Mine is constantly at 15,000 and I'm constantly in severe pain. If you have pancreatitis. You NEED to be hospitalized because the excess enzyme production can damage your liver and other internal organs. I've got vast background with pancreatitis. Both acute and chronic. Just one drink of alchohol can absolutely cause the pain and a flare up of pancreatitis. The pain is a dull achy cramping pain in your abdomen that can radiate to your flanks or sides as well as your back. If you push where the pain is. It'll intensify the pain. If you need more help feel free to message me.

Late reply here, I did have one of those enzymes elevated when I went to the hospital several years ago. I think it was lipase. I was dosing really high on a steroid called DMT and I had pain, abdominal swelling, and, this might be TMI, but I spontaneously ejaculated when I went to the bathroom to urinate. That scared the HELL out of me. I didn't tell the E.R. docs that detail, because I was too embarassed back then. People who drink to excess, take roids and bodybuild tend to be self-conscious and I definitely was, even more back then than I am now. They thought it could be my gallbladder. Thanks again, though. The pains been gone since a few days after I started this thread. I don't know for sure why it happens when I drink - and I LOVE DRINKING - but it seems like my body will never be able to tolerate alcohol again. Maybe it's messed up, but I don't feel like I deserve help, because I brought all of this on myself. Thanks just the same, everyone

I think you deserve help and I think you need to schedule an appointment with your doctor ASAP. You have an illness and you deserve treatment. Being addicted does not mean you are an bad person undeserving of treatment, it means you are a sick person and need treatment. He sooner you start the sooner you will be on a path to physical and mental health, and the more comfortable you will be with yourself and the more enjoyable you will find life. Please keep us updated.

The liver can heal better and faster than any other organ. These fibrosis resulted from liver damages will not prevent you from having a better life. I believe you just need to give yourself a break and seek a doctor or doctors who can provide you with the assistance you need. With time, good eating habits and exercise you'll feel the difference.

There's a point in living our lives when drugs do nothing but add up problems to your life. I see that you are already quitting and that changes everything. Try not to overthink on how you are not physically okay now and But focus on getting better. Every day you put this behind you it is a small step forward. It's one step at a time, as it is one day at a time. Put your strength and efforts together and you will get better. You can do this, if I did it you can certainly do it too.

Take care and good luck! We'll be here if you need help or just vent.
