Benzos I really need some advice asap. I am having BAD insomnia...

Agreed, try a hypnotic and not an anxiolytic benzo. Otherwise speak to your doc about combinations of benzo's with sedating anti-psych / anti-depr like Trazadone, Elavil and Seroquel. I had severe pain related insomnia and in the end it was a combo that put me down.

Dankaholic - It was difficult for me to get even 1.5 mgs of Xanax XR a day. My doctor didn't even want to give me that much. I was taking 1.5 mgs of Klonopin a day at the maximum dosage. How are you prescribed 4 mgs + 30 mgs of Temazepam?

Get yourself a Doctor who trusts you and is willing tow ork with your condition. I get 4 mg's of klonopin, 30 mg's of Temazepam, 60 mg's of OxyCodone, & 60 mg's of Morphine a day. I recently quit the Klonopin because after 3 years I noticed I really didn't need it for what I used to anymore and it was just silly to be on such a high dose. I weened myself down to 2mg a day then to 1 mq and this last visit I quit. I feel great. I was getting 2mg klonopins twice a day. My temazepam im keeping though it really works wonders for insomnia. I know you said it was hard to get xanax from him and thats understandable because its more commonly abused, id be surprised if he really didn't want to give you Temazepam though (Restoril) As you can see though my doctor isn't afraid to write me prescriptions and really try to do his best to help me. Im 23 and it was hard to get any doctor to take me seriously, even though I was in and out of the hospital all the time. It takes finding the right doctor. Also I worked myself up to the point im at I didn't just get everything prescribed over night. Once you have the medical records though showing what they've given you in the past it's a lot easier to get a new doctor to give you what you need. I came to my current doctor and already had the Klonpin 4mg a day and 30 mg of Temazepam. So he just wrote me scripts for those no problem and he added the OxyCodone and Morphine.

if you have real problems and your not bsing your doctor just to get pills, be honest with him and i'm sure he will help you. How you hold yourself, how you look, how you act will all dictate what your doctor thinks of you and surely influence what he is willing to write you. If you seem like a responsible person who just wants to improve there quality of life im sure he wouldn't have problems writing you a prescription for Temazepam. All though its my personal favorite benzo, it's not widely abused. Atleast here in the United States it isn't.

Thank you for the help. I wasn't aware that Xanax and Klonopin weren't used as sleep aids. I was VERY surprised when I took 1.5 mgs of Ativan last night... it hit me pretty hard within a few minutes and crept up to a pretty powerful, overwhelming feeling after about 10 minutes. It definitely makes me more tired than the Xanax XR does. I am going to talk to my doctor about using the Xanax XR for my anxiety and Ativan at night for my sleep. I have already removed any stimulants out of my room (TV/Computer/etc...) just as everyone has mentioned. I am starting to exercise and will make it a habit to do it at least 4x a week. I also used Melatonin last night (3 mgs chewable, tasted like mint), and I now take daily fish oil and vitamin supplements. If you don't mind me asking (you can PM me, but if you do not wish to share that is also ok - I completely understand), does the OxyCodone and Morphine help with anxiety and sleep? I'm a little confused as to how they help with that. I thought they were prescribed only for analgesic purposes. Thank you for all of your suggestions!

Oh the Oxycodone and Morphine are for a completely different reason lol im sorry I didn't mean to confuse you. I have Crohns Disease and I get fits of excruciating pain a lot! So thats basically my daily cocktail to keep that at bay. The klonopin was always for anxiety as was the temazepam. It was for insomnia induced my anxiety. I really can't say enough how well temazepam works as a sleep aid. Its a benzo MADE for sleeping. It hits heavy and fast, puts me right to bed no matter how bad my insomnia is it always works for me. If you would like to PM me and ask me any questions feel free!

I'm pretty sure drugs for sleeping are only going to make you dependent on them and not solve the problem what-so-ever. Maybe in the immediate sense, but it's just going to get a lot worse.

*End Rant*

Exercise.

Go running. Get in shape slowly and then go for a long run. It's the only way I can sleep multiple hours at this point.

Even though my brain is slowly feeling more and more shot, I figure I can either use insomnia to keep doing stuff until I eventually pass out or I could get all pissy and worried that I'm not sleeping. I choose the former.

OH, BTW, to the OP's last paragraph; Halcion. Never tried it, but I'm not a benzo dude. Supposedly will knock you out extremely easy.

if the insomnia is affecting you to the point where you cannot function properly because of it it's always helped me to keep some doxy on hand when i was prescribed remeron, xanax, klonopin, then seroquel to sleep.

some nights 2 mgs of xanax or 100 mgs of seroquel still couldnt put me out so i would take half or one tab of doxy on those nights.

Awesome. I will drop by Walgreens and pick some up in case an emergency situation comes up where I get very manic and can't sleep.

Dankaholic, (It won't let me PM you, I guess because I'm still a "Greenlighter"... when do I become a "Bluelighter"? I've been on the forums for awhile now...)

I REALLY appreciate all of the time you have spent helping me with my problem. I have taken it all into very careful consideration and have done quite a bit of research based on the information you have given me. Thank you SO SO SO MUCH!!! I will let you know how it all turns out :)

Best wishes.

I dont think with dank's condition he can do alot of exercising.

But I do get the point about staying busy for a full day will help you sleep better at night. Just as not doing anything all day could make you not sleep. I have done several things. One, I no longer have a tv or a computer in my bedroom. Its for sleep or hanging my clothes in the closet only. Also I get up at the same time, usually 9 am, and try to make as full a day I can with my disability. I try to go to sleep at the same time at night if I can. If I cannot after 30mins, I get up. I used to take an ambien. Those no longer work for me. I now take temazepam. Those work sometimes. If I dont think the temazepam is going to work, I take my promethazine for nasea , and usually make a vodka stinger. I prefer not to drink if I dont need to, and I never drink with any other meds. But drinking a couple cocktails usually does the trick.
Then awake, rinse and repeat.. lol

Do doctors prescribe versed? I used to use it in the ambulance for patients but I didn't know it was a Prescriptiong benzo....

As has already been said, benzo's/sleepers only work on a short-term basis..if used wisely (for a max period of 2 weeks) then yes they are very effective in treating anxiety/insomnia.

But if NOT used wisely, they become a bloody nightmare!

I used to buy em from an online pharmacy because no way would my doctor prescribe them to me. They just don't as a rule here in the UK nowadays.

My initial reason for buying them *illegally* was to help me get off the booze. I was in a pretty bad way with it at the time, loads of bad shit was happening all at once..my dad died, mum was diagnosed with cancer, long-term relationship ending etc. Valium, nitrazepam etc helped me cope all round. For a bit.

But I overdid it, carrying on using these meds for months whilst drinking again, banging loads of codeine (also bought online), taking other drugs.

Bottom line is they not only stopped working, but I got a vicious backlash like nothing I've ever known! 'Rebound effect'...on the whole I've recovered now, 4 yrs later, but my insomnia is still worse that it ever was before.:(Don't go there folks.

I used to have bad insomnia for years back in the day. Once I started working as a laborer though I would kill for that energy. A 12 hour day climbing boilers and busting 'stos with a clogged up respirator and I can rarely change out of my work cloths before falling asleep. Some exercise or a busy day may help greatly.

i have various medical problems, all of which the doctors think have been caused by having insomnia and lack of restorative sleep since i was a kid. God knows why! The doctors don't. When i was 6 weeks old was when my mum first took me to the doctor cause i really couldn't or didn't hardly sleep. Not just like a normal baby is but really seriously. I find that i need sleeping pills but try to use them as little as possible. And then there are times when i haven't slept one minute in 5 nights just for no reason even with pills. Not from drugs or being especially stressed or staying awake on purpose, it just happens sometimes, and the doctors have had to just prescribe me massive amounts of stuff to basically just completely put me under! I hear that in the USA there are sleep clinics and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this?

You just need 50 posts, which it looks like your simply one post away from "Bluelighter" status and you can PM me. Once you make that 50th post go ahead and PM me if you want to talk more privately about sleeping options. I've had this problem for a LONG time.

Your exactly right, I wish i could go ahead and exercise a lot to get some sleep, I don't liek relying on my Temazepam to sleep, so I don't anymore. I use it only when absolutely necessary. I sued to use it everyday and then when I would try to skip a night i'd have horrible "Rebound Insomnia" as they would call it. I was so used to the sleeping medication that when I didn't use it I would be worse than I originally was. So use your sleeping meds only when you absolutely have to. Like a night where you ahve to get some sleep because you have a big day the next day and if you miss sleep your going to be in for a day from hell. Try more natural things to aid sleep. I find having sex with my girlfriend (my kind of exercise) & then taking a real hot shower to be relaxing enough to put me to sleep on most nights without the help of Temazepam. When my insomnia is just too bad or my pain is killing me I'll take the Temazepam though and it is a real life saver!

^^ sex just gets me alla drenalined up.. ;)

LoL same here thats why it's followed up with a super hot shower that relaxes all of my muscles. Once I get that loving out of me and the hot shower calms all my muscles back down, i'm pretty much ready for bed. If it's a really bad night and I just toss and turn then I go ahead and take one of my Temazepams. I also try to not take ANY of my Opiate pain medications after like 5pm at night. When I have any kind of Opiate buzz going it makes me toss and turna nd I can't sleep at all. A lot of people say Opiates knock them out, but not me, they make me toss and turn and keep me up. I take my last dose of MS Contin and Percocets around 4pm. That usual makes it viable for me to be able to sleep by 10pm.

i don't want to get accused of doctor shopping (inappropriate joke!) but do you think you could find me one that'll prescribe me someone sexy to screw to help me sleep! And how should i ask for it? (sorry bad joke dank!)

Well there's places you can go for that, but im not sure if your medical insurance has a clause that covers prostitutes and brothel visits. =D

i live in the uk, we have the nhs, don't need insurance. I also occasionally work in a very high class version of a job that means actually if insurance covered it i'd be paid if you know what i mean! So i get it now and again! Unfortunately my illness prevents me from doing many 9-5 jobs. And a lot of the treatment i get like acupuncture and osteopathy i have to pay for myself. Even though i worked all my life before i was ill and paid my national insurance i get hardly anything in state benefits.
