I need to see a psychiatrist but I don't know how.

Hey guys, haven't been on BL in a while but I couldn't think of any other place that would be entirely understanding and help me with my issues.

I've been having a really rough time with everyday life lately. I feel depressed, dissociated, and slightly out of my mind at times. I'm 19 and still live with my parents. I've tried talking to them about it, but they're the type of people that believe that mental illness and psychology don't exist.

My issues are starting to manifest more and more daily and I don't want to let it spiral out of control.

Basically my question is what the title says. I don't have a whole lot of money and I have no idea where to even begin.

Hi devilsgospel -

Do you go to school? Many schools hve a counseling office that may be able to help you themselves or connect you with resources. If not then check to see if you city or county has a health department, they're affordable. I didn't have insurance when I was in my early 20's and was able to regularly see a psychiatrist through the county's health services. Visits were $25.00, and medication was free. Good luck!

Or to a group where you could do psychotherapy. It can also help and it's available in few universities, depending where you live.

Thanks for the replies.
Moreaux: I don't go to school currently, but I will check into that as it sounds extremely helpful. I want to keep this as far away from my parents as possible, would that be a good way? They would probably make me stop going, under threat of homelessness, if they found out.

I think so. Do you have a car? If you have access to a car either would be fine. I think using country services would be your best option right now as you call and get the process starting. You will have to prove income, which you should be able to do with either a pay stub or last years income tax return. They will also verify that you don't have health insurance.

You are 19, and I think it's very responsible that you want to see someone. I think you should see someone regardless of your parent's position on the subject, soon enough you'll be out on your own. It's better to resolve mental health issue sooner rather than late, especially if you hve big plans for the future.

I really appreciate the help Moreaux. I do have a car and would be able to take myself there. I have regular income so that won't be a problem either. I don't really know what my insurance situation is however. I believe I do have it, but if I use it and it comes back to my parents I'll be in some shit.

I'm just really tired of needlessly suffering through all of this. I want to enjoy my life and build a future for myself but it's becoming difficult to be even a functioning person ya know? My emotions are dominated by nothing but paranoia, hopelessness, and anxiety. I feel like my thoughts aren't even my own anymore.

That is tough. Is there anyway you can get the mail so you can snag the insurance statement lol? I normally don't recommend covert actions, but you should be able to see someone. Unfortunately, I doubt you can get county services if your parents have you on their insurance. To do your own insurance is ridiculously expensive - I had cobra for a while after I quit my job and it was $1200 a month. I know there are plans that are lower, but many don't adequately cover mental health. Have you queried free mental health on the Internet for your location? You may find some resources that way.
