It's always worth a shot trying something like Strattera (atomoxetine HCL), you never know how it will effect you personally. While it's typically much less effective than a stimulant type medication, it does work for some.
If you do have bad side effects from the drug, talk to your doctor about stopping. While stimulant medications like Adderall, Dexdrine, Vyvanse and Ritalin can/do help with ADD/ADHD problems, they aren't necesarrily the best option and addiction is almost certain if it's going to be a long term medication. While you may never personally abuse it for a high, it will gradually change processes in your brain permanently. Also, withdrawal can bring back the symptoms of ADD/ADHD worse than before, with added depression and "lows".
Things like adderall DO work for people, that's a fact. Taking it as prescribed is very important however. Other non stimulant medications such as Strattera are said to be less effective for overall treatment of ADD/ADHD, but you never know how it may effect you.
If you truly think you have ADD/ADHD and the symptoms get in the way of everyday life, talk to your doctor and tell him how it really is. Don't outright ask for medication, tell him your symptoms and what possible solutions are available. You already said he offered Adderall. If you do decide to take the prescription, try it out and see if it truly benefits you. There are MANY options. Adderall IR, Adderall XR, Dexedrine IR, Dexedrine XR, Vyvanse, etc. There are even some more desperate solutions such as Desoxyn, which is prescription Methamphetamine HCL. While I believe it's more commonly used for narcolepsy, it is used in some rare cases on ADD/ADHD.
Lots of people who truly have ADD/ADHD find their medication can at times make them tired and can fall asleep without a problem, where as someone who doesn't truly have ADD/ADHD will act like someone who DOES have ADD/ADHD while on Adderall and such, and not be able to sleep for a while after dosing. This of course is usually when being used recreationally, but still is the same regardless of dosage.
No one here can recommend what to say to your doctor to obtain scheduled drugs, as it's strictly against the rules.
Just be honest and completely truthful about how you feel, that's all the advice I can offer as far as talking with your doctor, and it will see the best results. There is no point in lying.
Possibly look into Racetams such as Piracetam for help with focus and mental clarity, it's said to work well for lots of people. I don't have any personal experience though so can't comment on that.
