The common definition and amounts you see governments and schools using to label "too much" or "alcoholic" are generally really low.
In college it seems even the geeks and the loners blast through those "acceptable levels" and go get hammered 3 nights a week. Even some people considered completely normal by those around them get blacked out 5 nights a week. And they don't just have a few drinks, they drink until they fuck some stranger or fall through a window.
In an environment like that, nobody bats an eye until you're way, way, way deep into alcoholism. Which is what you said basically, so it's easy to get confused. Alcohol being legal and accepted distorts it all. My freshman year of college I drank the entire first semester and 2nd semester I was waking up with withdrawals. I hid the shakes, but people still saw me drinking every single night, hard, and laughed and drank with me
