Anybody have it or know someone with this condition?
I utfse'd but none turned up any solid tips.

Just been diagnosed, and I haven't made it to a dietician yet. I have 2-3 spells throughout the day, of severe dizziness and fatigue. I've read up on it, and I know that a quick fix of Apple Juice or a Candy bar will do the trick, but I've had friends in the medical field, say it's not healthy to do that.

any suggestions or input on ways you battle this condition?

Quick fix like apple juice or candy bar will make you better for a while, but then you will crash and the cycle will continue. Avoid all forms of sugar (including honey, alcohol and less obvious ones - see the labels of foods you buy). Also eat more protein than carbs. I would suggest you take a look at Hypoglycemia for Dummies book. It's packed with every advice you will need.

As for the supplements. For some people Chromium (100-200 mcg/day) or multi's with chromium can work wonders on hypoglycemia: some can even start to eat sugar again and never experience symptoms of dizziness and fatigue they used to before they started using this supplement.

Good luck. It's not that big of a deal once you get a handle on it.

yeah i have it, i stick to a low-carb, high protien diet, if i drink too much or eat some sugary foods i get very hypoglycemic, i also havent figured out a way to roll since i was diagnosed with it over 2 years ago, i cant roll, take anything with speed, it sucks. so if you find the trick to rolling and actually not getting sick and fainting, let me know

"Many people like the idea of treating hypoglycemia with cake, cookies, and brownies. However, sugar in the form of complex carbohydrates or sugar combined with fat and protein are much too slowly absorbed to be useful in the acute treatment of hypoglycemia.

Once the acute episode has been treated, a healthy, long-acting carbohydrate to maintain blood sugars in the appropriate range should be consumed. Half a sandwich is a reasonable option."

keep up your research ...this will most likely be a life long condition you will have to learn to manage and you've already taken the first steps towards the positive rewards of responsible diabetes management. good luck and take care of yourself.

thanks for the replies.

can anybody elaborate on why I keep losing weight? A "normal" for me, but still somewhat underweight, is usually around 110 lbs.

I'm now down to 96. and it's about a loss of 2 lbs a week, for several weeks now.

My doctor is always quick to tell me condescendingly, "hypoglycemia does NOT cause x or x" whether it being weight loss or this New, Strange, high blood pressure I'm experiencing lately. (190/150) <~~~?

I get really low blood sugar once in awhile. What helps me is eating good carbs and protien. Instead of going for a candy bar when my blood sugar drops I try for protien bars or low GI bars that have nuts and stuff in them..

It really depends on the root cause of your hypoglycemia. Did you receive any information from the doctor about your hormone balance?

I've got it. Any longer than three or four hours without eating and I start shaking and generally turn into an emotional freak, lol.

Chromium supplements can help a lot, but the best thing to do is to introduce a low sugar, high fibre diet that focuses on low GL foods(check out Patrick Halford's optimum nutrition bible for info on this). Having a good source of protein in every meal helps to slow down the release of carbohydrates - cottage cheese is perfect cause it contains no sugar and is low in fat, but nuts and seeds are great also.

It's also a good idea to have several smaller meals spread out over the day rather than to have three large meals, as this helps to keep your blood sugar stable too.

I started doing all this a few weeks ago, as well as taking three full spectrum vit/min supplements daily and I haven't had any problems since. I used to have terrible crashes and feel absolutely miserable, and not know why, but now I feel great =D

It is important for hypoglycemics and diabetics to remove "simple sugars" from their diets for a period of at least two months to give the pancreas a chance to heal and function properly. Have you tried taking chromium supplements? My doctor told me that Phosphoglutamase is an enzyme used to digest simple sugars that is chromium dependent. Some research show that diabetics and hypoglycemics are deficient in chromium.
Anyway I really suggest you have an indepth discussion with your doctor regarding your diet and whatever else you need to do for your condition.

i thought hypoglycemia made you gain wieght? well at least in my case it did. i basically have to follow a strict version of atkins just to maintain and fight the non stop hunger...its actually quite miserable

Crikey, it doesn't sound like it's helping you that much karma_k, if you're always hungry and miserable. I don't think Atkin's diet is very good for you. It's not an issue of cutting out carbs, just one of cutting out refined carbs. Porridge, apples and quinoa are good, releasing energy slowly and thus helping to maintain a constant blood glucose level but white bread and bananas etc cause a jump in blood sugar and the body overcompensates with too much insulin.

I got it real bad but ive been like that for so long that i just ignore it. yea, sounds wack and i get real tired and shit but when im at work or doing something else sometimes it aint a option.

I found out from one of them 6-hour glucose test things and my shit was maaad outta control when they did the results. its better to have shit around you can grab to eat. but i been working long ass days and shit like that, long before i ever found out i had a "condition", so i would just tell myself "quit bein a pussy, you cant stop to eat now, keep working, or whatever, control yourself, you aint gonna faint, its cool, just drink some water and sit down, youll be fine, no need to get all pussy just because you aint ate since a few hours ago."

even now im still in that habit of ignoring when i need to eat if im busy doin somethin else or there aint food around. yea i get real shitty and weak feelin but mind over matter, only time that changes is when i feel like imma pass out then i sit down and chill for a minute, eat some crackers, whatever.

Follow other peoples advice that juice and candy bars are a horrible idea. you need to eat protein with some bread or some shit to get you back in order. the only time you should have some high-sugar shit is if you got no other choice, youre about to faint in the middle of the crosswalk on a highway or some shit, or theres no other food at all. but if you got any choice, avoid all that sugary shit it will just make you feel worse. basically eating a candy bar is like fillin your busted tire with a can of Fix-A-Flat while eating some complex carbs with protein is like fixing the leak and filling your tire proper at the air pump.

Did your bloodwork include a thryoid function panel?

I find that a packet of instant oatmeal works for me as midmorning/afternoon snack during the work day.

Damn lacey k you better take care of that... I've read that bad hypoglycaemia can lead to insulin tolerance to diabetes. Fuck that man. Fuck diabetes.

Well you cant really "take care" of it...there aint really a cure or nothing, lol. all i can do is try and eat right and avoid extra sweet foods. which aint a problem . im a huge weed smoker but i always crave the salty spicy foods like wings, fried chicken and shit not the sweet crap. in general i prefer savory over sweet so its all good. i dont eat that great, but i dont eat that bad......and i dont want no diabetes. but its lucky, there aint more than one case of diabetes that i know of in my famil history so i think imma be OK.

Have any of you found any foods that are particularly filling? I'm hypoglycemic and I'm starving ALL the time. I recently stopped taking Wellbutrin which had been helping curb my appetite, and I gained 12 pounds almost instantly. I am almost permanently starving.... Even when I try to stick to almost entirely proteins and such, I'm still hungry all the time. My gland/hormone panels have never been dead center in the healthy range, but they've never been too far from normal either, so there aren't really any medical solutions for me.

I read somewhere that smoking marijuana can lower your bloodsugar even more and make you feel worse if you're hypoglycemic. Don't drink heavily either bc this will trigger it.
Chromium always made it worse for me too.
Some sweets are OK in an emergency, but these have to be balanced with complex carbs and protein or you'll crash.
Just eat something every half hour to an hour and you'll probably feel a lot better.
