Hi I have been skimming through blue light for awhile but this is my first post. I have been taking hydrocodone 5/325 mg for 6 months. I take 15-25 mg once a week, sometimes once every two weeks-I usually take them when i have a migraine, which I get once a week or once every two weeks. I have to have surgery in three weeks and I am feeling nervous that when i go to take a pill for my pain, it won't help. I have decided to not take any form of narcotic and just push through with advil the next few weeks until my surgery-but i was wondering if anyone could shed light on what they think someone with my "tolerence" will feel from a 7.5/325 in three weeks after my surgery, should I ask my doctor for oxy instead and tell him i have been taking the hydro from my headache and am scared I will still be in pain, or do you think I will be okay with the hydros? thank you so much.

Welcome to Bluelight.

I think that you'll still probably have to dose 15 mg (two 7.5/325 tablets) of hydrocodone after your surgery. Your tolerance is certainly not out of control, and you have plenty of interval in between doses to not have to worry yourself so much about it. Of course you could always start with one pill and work your way up, but post-op pain can be kinda rough.

If your surgeon is worth his salt, he'll make sure your pain is adequately addressed. If you have concerns about hydrocodone, voice them. They are totally valid ones and he should be more than willing to work around the problem with you.

Oxycodone would be a better choice for post-op pain, in my opinion, especially if you take hydrocodone on a semi-regular basis.

Breezym16,

Is it a script you have for the hydrocodone, or are you getting them from someone?

If it's a script, then there should be no reason not to tell your doctor. In fact, you should tell him. Haven't you already filled out paperwork for surgery putting down what meds you’re taking, etc.?

If it's non-scripted hydrocodone you’re taking, you go in and tell him and then ask for Oxycodone, if you were the doctor how would that look to you? With the way things are going over pain drugs nowadays, you might be lucky to get a picture of an aspirin in a controlled environment!

Because you haven't already told your doctor about the hydrocodone, I'm assuming it's non-scripted. If it were me, since you can go without taking them, that's what I do and go from there after the surgery. You will have what you have saved up and you should be getting more. As it is now you don't have much of a tolerance built up anyway, so after a few weeks you should be good.

BTW, if you start on the Oxycodone the hydrocodone will probably not work much for you any longer. You will also be playing with a drug that's a lot easier to become addicted/dependent on!!! I took hydrocodone for 25 years and never had much problem with addiction...but after only 2 1/2 years on the Oxycodone, I can't function without it!!! Well, it was a lot less than 2 1/2 years before I couldn't function without it. There's a good chance that the 25mg you are taking a week now will turn into 25mg a day and just go up from there. None of this is in stone, but.

Hey guys thanks for your replies
Yes it is a script i have for myself. It is from my neurologist (do the fact we thought the headaches were something in his department) but now since i have to have sinus surgery i am in the care of a different doctor. I haven't filled out any paperwork yet because I have to bring in my cat scan- at that point is where we will discuss that kind of thing. I don't have an addictive personality i can go four months without touching any sort of narcotic. I have done the roxys, the oxys, etc back in the day and never have craving for them and it has been about 4 years since i have done them. I got a script for the hydros about 6 months ago so i began using them again. It says on my bottle take 1-2 for pain. I hope my doctor understands that I am just legit worried about being in pain and not trying to "score".

^I think you'll be good. :)

While we can't tell you what to say to a doctor to acquire controlled drugs (board policy), we can tell you that honesty is the best policy when it comes to doctors. Their job is to help you feel better.

Good luck!
