HOW TO QUIT SMOKING ~ Mega Thread

Are you against using the patch? It helped me so much. I still had some cravings, but I would just rub my little patch to remind myself that I was getting nicotine, so the cravings were all in my head. I had no problem getting off the patch after 3 weeks. (They recommened a lot longer than that.) I have heard that all the 3's are the worst. 3 days, 3 weeks and 3 months. If you can get through those, it's all good.

I remember the car and breaks at work being the hardest times.

FWIW, I don't think a benzo is going to help much.
 
I used Nicorette gum and it really helped me out alot. I haven't had a smoke in over a month and a half. Sometimes, when I smell a cigarette I really really want one, but it goes away quick.

The mood swings sucked and I was a major jerk for about 5 days... but they go away. Also I feel so much better and look better already.

I started exercising when I quit and am still doing it. Its such a better choice.

I made it through day three with no problem. And, I've re-thought the benzo thing. They're not worth the money, and it's all in my head. Yeah, there's a physical addiction from smoking for 5-6 years, but it's easy for my body to detox with all the supplements I'm taking. Plus, the homeopathics help too.

The stuff in my homeopathic liqui-gel: Lobelia herb, fresh Oat seed in milky stage, Licorice root, Osha root, Passionflower herb, Pleurisy root, Grindelia flower, Mullein leaf, Ginger root.

When I get a craving, I just remind myself that I don't need it, it's not good for me, and I quit for my health. My willpower is stronger. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's having to go through this. Thank you for the advice guys. <3 <3

cinnamon and/or tea tree toothpicks helped me tremendously when i was trying to quit.

Thank you! Cinnamon gum has helped too. Something about the cinnamon I can't put my finger on, it works. I'll see if the local store up here where I live has them.
 
Hey, there's a whole foods not too far from where I work in the city. I'll have to check it out. This homeopathic stuff is working rather well though, I tell you.
 
Homeopathy is a pseudoscience at best.

That isn't saying that you should discount something that helps you quit smoking right away, but honestly.

Anyway, this is my advice and it may not work for you, but I'll try.

I quit cold turkey, the thing is, after day three or whatever it was, I'd just be used to having a smoke. For instance, getting in my car would mean lighting a smoke. Eating a good meals meant smoking a butt.

It's what I was used to and I'd really crave a cigarette after those activities. So, what did I do? Put myself in that position as much as possible. Drive, eat a bit more frequently, ect. and not allow myself to have a smoke.

Eventually, the cravings would die down on the activities that I took part in the most. Until, eventually, I lost all cravings for cigarettes. It worked for me, thank God, because smoking just sucked.
 
One thing I've noticed: My pack of "Orbit" gum has lasted longer than my pack of cigarettes did.


Masonyoung, thank you. I am enjoying the oxygen. The cravings ebb and flow though. Mostly it's a stress response, I'm noticing.
 
waterheart, if you have a membership to a wholesale store (costco, sam's club, etc.) that might help you with your gum purchases. :) i'm a gum-o-holic (i still smoke), but buying it there is WAY cheaper. not sure if you're using gum to subside the cravings, but what they hey. :)
 
Day 5. A slight cough, but it's probably a good thing. It's getting easier, though. Managed to get through a bunch of stress the previous day without regressing. I can breathe more easily, too.
 
I'm currently going through the ...hmmm third or fourth time quitting cigarettes. I hope it's the last one.

I don't get much anxiety or anything coming off ciggies, I just talk a lot more. a LOT more, I must be a pain in the ass this days...

What helps? gum (I chew gum literally all day long), water, washing your teeth...

The part I hate the most though.... a week has gone by and I'm getting a clogged nose and coughing...
 
Same here.....I think it's the body cleaning itself out. I'm taking Mullein, and it's helping to make things more productive. I'm coughing up some stuff that's got brown crap in it, and I know that's a good thing.
 
I have just started quitting around the time you did. my plan is pretty much nicorette gum and then I go running EVERY DAY. something about flushing your lungs out seems to help me out a lot. even if I am busy and I can't go on like a mile-long adventure, I will just run around my complex a couple times and get a slight sweat going.
 
i've quit smoking a good 25 times..at least (not smoking right now, or forever more). So here is some advice from an old pro ;)

-you will start coughing up a bunch of nastieness, its my impression that this is accumulated narnar in your lungs, throat etc. Smoking will make you stop coughing, but it will continue the cycle.

-if you get drunk around other people smoking, you WILL WANT A CIG. I don't know how to not have one. If you find out, please tell me.

-consider the pros and cons if you are about to smoke.

All I can say, with the stress I'm undergoing right now, and the fact that something else in unavailable, it's almost unbelievable I haven't asked someone for one.
 
if you do have one, remember that you haven't failed and you don't have to keep smoking.

a lot of people smoke one cig, figure its all over, and buy a pack.

quitting involves saying no to every cigarette that presents itself. sometimes this is difficult and impulse takes over. doesn't mean you have to automatically become a smoker again.
