HOW TO QUIT SMOKING ~ Mega Thread

if you must quit do yourself a favor and use the patch.

were I ever to try again, I would definately use the patch.

I am out of shape and want to get healthy. I loved the way I felt when I quit for 6 weeks. Loved being able to smell 5x better. Loved the extra energy I had.

I really need to get in shape, I am strongly considering joining the milatary once I get a few things straightened out.

Pretty much I am trying to end my destructive habits. This is the biggest one I have right now.
 
I smoke roughly give or take 6 or 7 smokes/day, boy for me is it tough to hold off especialy if you been

working, thinking hard, ect.. the major culprit- Like bread and butter...alcohol....

Ive read that the average cig crave is like 2 minutes, you probly heard. But if its not those 2 minutes its gonna be the next 2 minutes later...,Im gonna try hard and begin to cut down, because of health and $$..

For me I dont even like smoking in public purely for the fact of being seen??I think cause of the stigma of certain tags/labels cigs can bring on.....then again I can get the noids sometimes,

Didn't read the thread but no Zyban didn't work .. what did work was nicotine inhalers ... I gather mostly because you have something to do with your hands.

3 months free for me the first time EVER ... although I'm smoking again ... it's never too late to give up :)

Zyban - Has anyone tried it? Did it work?
Seems to run the gamut. Does nothing for some people, others "automatically" lose all desire to smoke shortly after starting it. Most of the rest seem to be helped somewhat, but not enough to make it a panacea of any kind. The side effects can be REALLY hard to take at first, so requesting a low dose (e.g. 100mg/day, up to a max of 200/day eventually) is often a good idea. IMO the recommended amount (300mg/day) is just too much for a lot of people, myself included.

My story, BTW: I switched to snuff/chewing tobacco for several years, then switched to nicotine gum/lozenges, THEN quit. Dunno if this was harder or easier than quitting cigarettes directly; it certainly was expensive as hell! 8) I did use bupropion, but only for about two weeks: one week before quitting, until one week after.
 
i tried zyban worked great for cig cravings too bad im not into all that adreline and Norephinephrine stimulation.... I think the easier way is to use a patch and taper ofcourse followed by atleast 30 mins of exercise every day and healty food eating


cigs are a bitch i still smoke 5-6 a day... ill smoke 4 cigs in 3 hours then not smoke for about 16 hours after that usually...

I can go about 20 hours without smoking but eventually i give it before the 24 hr mark
 
I've never tried Zyban, but I use to smoke and I was able to quit cold turkey only because I constantly prayed about it and God gave me the strength and the will power to quit and I haven't smoked since then. I am proud to say because of God I haven't smoked since Jan 31st 2007. But if you smoke weed or drink its going to be really hard because as everybody knows they intensify your cravings. I someone that got some kind of shot if it wasn't a shot it has something to do with the ear but this person hasn't smoked in like 7 months because of the treatment. All you really have to do is find something to keep you busy just remember that the average craving last fifteen minutes so if you start to get a craving just try to keep busy and focus on something other than the craving because the less you think about the craving the weaker the craving is. If you can last a day then you can last a lifetime. I recommend sugar free candy or even like a cinnamon stick because the taste of it and the taste of a cigarette should make you want to quit. if not, any time you get a craving chew on a piece of gum until the flavor is gone then throw it away, and if the craving is still there then get another piece of gum. You have to have a positive attitude about it when quitting, tell your self that you are quitting no matter what any time you feel like smoking take a cigarette and break it. It builds willpower, Good Luck, let me know how it works out for you.

When I smoke grass I have no desire to smoke a cigarette, probably 'cause I am too stoned to light one, and always end up dropping the lighter or breaking the cigarette in half accidentally :p.

Also it would be better if you gave us any references to back up that comment before making such claims :|.
 
fuck zyban, and fuck the nicotine patch. just quit cold turkey. there really isnt any easy way to quit smoking, you just gotta stop doing it.
 
my method for quitting smoking

ok so i've gone from not smoking last year to smoking a pack a day or more. today's sunday. on friday i was still smoking, actually i smoked 2 packs in a day, got home 5am, and after waking up at 10 feeling terrible decided it was time to quit.

but the feeling of a sudden lack of nicotine is not a pleasant one, i get really uncomfortable and find it hard to focus.

so to take the edge off, i just bought a bunch of pseudoephedrine/paracetamol cold tabs and have been dropping them every few hours for the last two days. i've had completely weird sleeping patterns, but that's a small price to pay and is probably related more to the nicotine and the fact i was out friday than these things.

i also took a 1.5 hour bike trip up a mountain near my house on friday morning, which (not being able to breathe, coughing up cigarette muck from the bottom of my lungs) was probably what prompted the decision.

i even went out yesterday night and met a friend for dinner, who was smoking right in front of me, and i didn't cave in to smoke.

reckon i've beaten it now.

so to anyone who's trying to drop the cancer-sticks, get yourself a free weekend and a bunch of OTC meds! worked for me... (so far :) )
 
I'm currently 5 days smoke and chew free. I've found nicorette has really helped. I'm also working out and jogging every day+ eating healthy. The good thing for me is I actually need to add a few pounds so the weight gain is a plus.

Cig free 3 years (after 16 years of smokes) this November! I am always very proud to declare this. I used the patch for 30 days.
 
Quitting smoking....

....is a pain in the ass. The mood swings from nicotine withdrawal are not fun. I don't know whether to panic or punch a wall. Then the slight hot flashes. I'm taking homeopathics. They help, IMMENSELY. But when there's a gap, such as at work....it's NUTS.

The mood swings are a bit much. I'd like to get a prescription for a benzo for this, if it's appropriate.

Any advice?
 
gum, mints, toothpicks, suckers, whatever...having something to do with your mouth helps

I would advise against Chantix, it can help but it can also make things worse.

also, this has been covered intensively on BL and there are tons of other sources

I'd like to get a prescription for a benzo for many reasons, but that's not always possible. actually its never been possible for me.
 
Chantix and Wellbutrin (Zyban) are contraindicated in people who have previously consumed phenethylamines (of course, this isn't on the labeling, dammit)

Wellbutrin gives me panic attacks like crazy, and because of this, my doctor has advised me against taking Chantix.

Today is day three. I'm not giving up.
 
if you've gotten to the 3rd day, without so much as a 'puff'...your on your way, and the cravings and bad mood will go away...Keep up the good work, you'll feel excellent very soon...I'm 1 month away from a year, and I look and feel a whole lot better....(plus I've got alot of extra $$$-butts were costing me 200 a month)...Good Luck
What I mean is, after the 3rd day, your pretty much done with the addiction aspect-from there it's working on the 'habit'...
