Computing How to crossfade an audio file properly?

I was wondering if someone could help me with this please? I would like to create a voiceover to advertise my college department (no monetary gain). I've chosen the song "Happy Together" by the Turtles and shortened it from the original version 3 minute version to but I haven't been able to do a crossfade properly between 0:41 and 0:43. It sounds like the audio has been chopped.

 
You can install something like Audacity (free!), record the voiceover to a new track, then adjust the envelopes in the background track using the Envelope tool (either in the toolbar, or F2 in Windows), like this:
