How much food do you consume in one day?

Well.... how much do you eat in a day? I was looking over the '5 small meals a day' thread and was reminded of the fact that I eat more than anyone else I know. I eat about two REALLY large meals a day, probably two more 'normal-sized' meals, and will snack continually throughout the day. That being said, I can also go for a long time without being hungry, ie. if I am busy doing something important, I have forgotten to eat all day untill nighttime before. However, this is usually not the case, and I'm guessing I consume about 4000 calories a day. However, at 5'7 I weigh 135 lb, despite the fact that I have not been physically active for the six or so months since I tore my ACL in my knee.

So, my question is, are there any other people on this board who eat a huge amount of food each day? Are there people who rarely eat all day? People who eat average amounts of food? Why, and how does it affect you?

(I just realized my awesome post count, now I can never post again!!!)

I'm on 3500 as I'm trying to bulk up, although that's very clean, no junk food at all.

Sounds familiar, do you happen to smoke pot? :p

I'm trying to lose weight so my daily intake is between 1500 and 2000 calories. This is quite a bit less than I was used to so I eat a lot of low calorie foods (like leafy vegetables) and drink tons of green tea to supplement. On a normal day I'll have four meals of 300-400 calories, and a snack (usually fruit or vegetables).

I eat tons of food each day. I don't put on weight though even though I'm in my 50s. I take a lot of fiber and eat lots of veggies along with all the crap. I use coconut oil alot and that helps keep the weight off. also CLA.

Basically and unfortunately I am a food addict.:(

It depends on a lot of stuff for me.
If Im happy, Ill eat maybe 2 meals in a day. No snacking..but the meals are sometimes good sized.
If Im depressed I can go on one meal a day or even less sometimes. I can barely swallow a mouthful of food if Im depressed or stressed out something. :\

I think I eat less than 2000 calories, but to sustain the weight that I'm at, I'm guessing that's about what I have.

Generally I have an egg & grits for breakfast or a granola bar & diet coke, then some sort of sandwich (from home) and chips and veggies for lunch, and dinner is just a regular (generally homecooked) dinner. I think I eat better than most people I know, but I think my portions are just larger or something...the occasional beer/wine that I love doesn't help either!

I consume a lot of food in one day. Since I exercise quite intensely I feel hungry most of the time, and I'm also a vegetarian which I think makes it difficult to be satisfied. Actually, I don't know whether that's true, haha, but someone told me that meat makes you full in ways that no vegetable can.

When I lost heaps of weight I was eating 5-6 meals a day. They were really small, but for some reason I don't remember being too hungry. These days, I eat about 5-6 meals a day, but they're really big and funnily enough I'm always hungry.

I'm gradually trying to control my food intake. I read somewhere, "Eat to live, don't live to eat."

~3500 calories a day in 5 meals.
A vegan who gets ~40 minutes of aerobic exercise daily.
This maintains 5'11" at 160 lb. for this 22 yr. old male.

Deja....not good my friend. No two ways around it, 2 meals a day no matter how healthy they are does not cut it. There can be no possible way that in tow meals you receive the nutrients you need to be living a healthy lifestyle. Especially if you are active.

Ok maybe that was a bit extreme, but, in any case you are not optimizing your health.

I consume a lot of food a day, but I am a quasi-serious athlete. If I am training for a mountain bike race I will eat around 6-7 small meals a day. I always have a fresh sqeezed oj/banana/blueberry/bee pollen smoothie and bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch(soymilk, of course) for breakfast and then eat every 2-4 hours after that. I try to have lots of greens (lettuce, spinach, brocolli, etc...) and good sources of lean protein such as tuna, soy, lean turkey, buffalo, cage-free organic eggs, etc. When biking a lot I consume 4-5 Cliff Shot Energy Gels a day (they are made with Brown Rice Syrup, no high fructose crap). One more smoothie during the evening and maybye a glass of red wine, try not to eat after 7:30pm.

I seem to be always eating, I snack constantly. But they are healthy things (on weekdays, anyway)!

My average day would consist of: Small bowl of cereal with skim milk, or 1 piece of wholegrain toast with peanut butter for breakfast (on weekends I have eggs).
Piece of fruit mid-morning. Green salad plus tuna, tomato & avocado on crackers for lunch.

A yogurt or handful of nuts in the afternoon. Rice crackers or pretzels with low-fat Tzatziki dip when I get home from work (I'm starving pre-dinner!). A home-cooked meal such as spaghetti bolegnaise, or chicken burritos, or sweet & sour pork stirfry with rice for dinner (for example) - I always cook low fat, lean meat versions and include lots of vegetables, but I do use a lot of packet and jars of sauces which probably contain lots of sugar/salt(bad).

Then low-fat icecream or a couple of squares of chocolate for desert (my treat). See that looks like heaps, and it doesn't even count in a glass of wine or two several nights a week! But that's a standard day for me.

I could cut down (and do occasionally) but I'm fairly happy where I'm at despite being a little overweight. It doesn't worry me much to tell the truth, I feel healthy and look sexy ;). I think my after work snack could probably be vegetable sticks rather than crackers and I know I eat too many carbs with dinner. Also wine is a killer (like fizzy noted), and I don't have much willpower around salty snacks like chips and cheese/dip :)

Wierd, I was just thinking about this before i logged on.

I tend to eat whenever i can, coz i'm always busy/on the move for work or something.

So brekkie is important to me. I usually have a pretty big bowl of museli with fruit and yohgurt + coffee

If i want to be guaranteed lunch I have to carry food with me, so i tend to just snack constantly throughout the day, usually on fruit (of which i have about 5 or 6 pieces a day(probably not good), and crackers/nuts/seeds or a muffin.

If i get lunch it's usually around 2 or 3 o'clock, and it's usually tuna/salmon/egg/beans + salad and rice or bread.

I normally have a predinner snack of nuts/crackers/yoghurt/fruit

and then dinner is usually lots of veggies with some protien - usually fish or occasionally lean steak, and (brown) rice/bread and/or sweet potato.

Then i'll have yohgurt with fruit, and sometimes some dark chocolate + some more almonds or fruit toast or something.
occasionally i'll follow this with more crackers etc in the late evening.
I normally drink about at least 5 cups of tea with rice milk in the afternoon/evening as well.

I'v been thinking about cutting down the amount i eat in the evenings, to reduce my bodyfat/muscle ratio a little bit. I think i tend to consume a little bit more than i need in the late evenings.

I keep around 1500 calories a day within three meals a day and a snack. I'm on a diet though, I was eating somewhere around 3000 calories a day before that. Ever since my diet I have lost 12 pounds in 15 days.

You are aware that beyond maybe the 3-4 lbs of water weight, 9-10 lbs of weight loss in 2 weeks surely means that you must be burning your muscle mass for energy (with few exceptions). This could possibly mean that your body fat percentage may me staying the same (or increasing) while your total body weight is decreasing.

It has been suggested that weight loss through proper diet and exercise should yeial around 2 lb's a week in fat loss, while properly maintaining muscle mass. This is why it is often a better idea to measure progress in a diet through BF% and not lbs lost.

I can tell you now that the reason this is occuring to you is because of your drastic drop from 3000 calories/day to 1500 calories/day. Your body thinks its starving, probably and is responding as such (retaining fat). It would be more beneficial (I believe) to increase your calories to somewhere in the 2,000 range, and maybe increase your cardio and resistance training. Keep protein intake high and drink shitloads of water.

Just my 2 cents even though you didn't ask. :)

To preface, I am a female, 5'4", fluctuating between 115-125 (closer to 115 in the spring/summer) and right now I get very little formal exercise. On a typical weekday, I eat anywhere between 1200 and 1800 calories a day. I eat whenever I'm hungry, but generally three meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), two snacks (mid-morning and mid-afternoon), and an occasional dessert. On weekends, I tend to eat (and drink... wine is such a weakness!) a lot more. When I'm working out, I also eat quite a bit more.

I stopped eating meat (except fish, if you consider that meat) a little over a year ago. I eat a lot of whole grains, fruit, veggies (cooked and raw), low or no fat dairy (yogurt, milk), and nuts. I buy all natural, minimally processed, no sugar/salt added products whenever they're available. I try very hard to balance my diet, picking a lot from each food group. (Incidentally, if you haven't checked out the USDA's new pyramids, you should. They're tailored to your sex, age, weight, and activity level, plus they're in exact amounts rather than a generic 'serving size.' Much more helpful than before. http://www.mypyramid.gov/ )

Everyone at work gives me such shit about being so lucky I'm slim (particularly in contrast to them). And if they're not saying it's luck, it's just that I don't ever eat, which couldn't be farther from the truth. It really infuriates me because if they put half the effort I do into shopping for and cooking healthy meals, they wouldn't be so overweight. But, yet, it's luck that I'm not. 8) Both my parents (and 3 of 4 grandparents, for that matter- although all deceased now) are overweight, have high blood pressure and diabetes, so I think it's safe to say that I really can't count on anything but my own hard work to stay healthy.

EDIT to include how it affects me. (Should've read the original post more closely.) Caloriewise, I know I probably eat far less than a lot of people, but I never deny myself anything I really want in the name of staying thin or being healthy. I find that once you start eating healthier food (and less food overall), it just feels better and you don't want to do differently. I ate like a pig in college, with no regard for what I was shoveling in and it impacted my weight and my energy level, for sure. I weighed about 135 at my peak and just generally didn't feel good physically (although I would imagine drug use played some role in this). I did it while it suited me, because no responsiblity, including any for how you eat, is appealing for a while. But, now, I feel better and I know I look better. So, the effect is positive I'd say.

^^^Cheers to you. Anyone who has struggled with their weight in the past or currently know for a freakin fact that it is not easy to be thin and healthy.

But there are those certaine people who are just naturally thin, but you can spot those people out because they do not necessarily look healthy. In thin women, you can tell because "healthy" skinny women in my opinion still have curves to them in all the right places, where unhealthy naturally skinny women seem to be more narrow.

Now that is just my opinion and experience, and I do know that women healthy or not come in all sorts of different sizes with curves in all sorts of different places.

peace.

>>I stopped eating meat (except fish, if you consider that meat)>>

ummm...yes. :)

I know, I know. By the broadest definition, it's animal flesh, so it's meat. But, stricter definitions only consider mammal flesh to be 'meat', while that of foul is 'poultry' and of fish, 'fish'. For me, the question of what to call it is irrelevant anyway. I know what it is and the label is unimportant.
