Science How many shades of color do YOU see in this image?

This has been going around twitter for the last few days. It reminds me of the debate about the picture of the shoes, etc, etc.

How many shades of color do you see below?

I see 11 fairly distinct bands. Others reckon they see more, others as few as 3 lol:

Read about the science below:

Because I'm a bloke, all I see is pink.

No doubt a woman can identify 97 different colours - all with ridiculous names...

;)

there's a color difference about every milimeter

The point of it is that everyone perceives it differently because of how our eyes let in the light to put it simply.

It’s worth reading the accompanying link that CFC posted.

The more you zoom into it with saturation applied you can see the more you zoom the smaller it gets until it can't anymore that's why I say milimeter, but you're right

it's an illusion of color tint. It's just the same tint in unit of colors. I get it

The purpose of a color being transparent is to blend with the background, and consequently look slightly different depending on the context. the saturation percentage, ranging from 0% to 100%, defines how much of that color you want. look at a Hexadecimal scale ranging in different color differentiations

In other words Each tint gets smaller and smaller like cells in your body until you get to the atom ect.

I'm counting, I think 14..ima check again...

Ok so this is a little confusing, there are 11 fairly distinguishable blocks, but where they change there are very small lines that might be considered additional shades, but they may be compression artifacts.

In terms of large fairly easily distinguished blocks... I count 11, counting the thin lines, 14-16.

What do I win?

Ain't our fault male eyes are outright defective like 10% of the time. Imagine if 10% of all cameras had defective photo sensors? Samsung clearly has superior quality control and engineering to God.

Ah to live in a world without fuchsia. :D

Love that several people (including myself) see even more shades than intended. Perhaps this wasn't a great choice of file format. :P
