Ive made it before with butter, and an hour on a low simmer worked fine. Im wondering if the same amount of time is sufficient for canola oil? i think it would be. Would love some first hand advice. Thanks a bunch in advance.

EDIT- I think I burned it as it doesnt have that pleasant smell. I didnt let it boil AFAIK, but the smell tells me I burnt it. How much will that affect potency?

thanks again.

I have made this hundreds of times. I usually simmer on low heat for anywhere from 30-45 minutes. A good rule of thumb for me has always been when the weed starts losing its green then take it off, it'll still cook for a bit and I've always had best results cooking the least possible.

I would keep and eye, and nose on it. If you don't have an oil thermometer that is. If you have an oil thermometer, keep it below 200c. I know that's kinda hot, but unattended oil can reach this temp fairly easily, even if the oven isn't on high.

When the smell starts to get really fragrant, I'd remove it from the heat and give it a little saute swirl for a bit while it cools off. You can wait til it browns, but at that point its going to taste a little burnt

i BURNED the shit

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! it never actually boiled but the pot cover had brown condensation on it so im pretty sure i burned it. Im pissed.

how much will this affect potency?

im a dumbass. not a novice, just a dumbass.

I burnt the weed itself and the oil is brown. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!! AM i out .25 Oz of middies?

so, any thoughts?

if nothing else, hopefully the brownies taste good.

Canola oil is bad.

Why would you use such an oil that does not compare with the holiness of cannabis? It is cheap, most people have allergies to it, and is unhealthy.

Plus it goes rancid quickly and easily burns.

i was not aware of canola's inferiority. shoulda done some research. just hope it was not a lesson that i had to lose $ and waste the holy THC to learn.

update: the oil when altogether in the cup is brown, however when in small amounts or spread thinly, it is green.

we shall see tmrw AM when im 100% sober and have an empty stomach. will eat 1/12 of the batch and report back.

canola oil isn't that bad. there's a lot of misinfo out there about it. It does burn easily due to its low saturated fat content, if i'm not mistaken. However this low saturated fat, and higher unsaturated fat is what makes it one of the better plant oils for use with cannabis. These empty spots on the lipid chains facilitate thc bonding. All this being said, I've always heard, and experienced subjectively, that real butter is the way to go b/c thc bonds more readily to animal fat, which seems counter-intuitive because butter is higher in saturated fats. I'm not sure of the scientific validity of this claim, but butter tastes better as well.

There is some good news, the plant material in the oil will brown well before the thc is destroyed, the latter would occur at almost 400 F. While cellulose doesn't burn until 451F (if i remember correctly), reefer will brown at lower temperatures, so while it might taste a bit funky, it shouldn't have lost too much potency.

I don't believe conola sacrifices anything. I used to make butter and then work it into whatever recipe I was making. Most recipes call for oil so why not use it? I've never had less success with any oil for that matter.

I'm not saying brown the weed, I'm saying watch till it loses color. Smell isn't that accurate IMO because your house is now full of the smell anyway. I mean low heat, no bubbling at all and then when its ready and you give it a stir you can see green seeping into the oil. Its not burnt, I don't even filter and you can't taste it.

What are/were you trying to make? If its anything with eggs make sure the oil is cool before you mix. I've had a lot of friends start cooking their eggs in the mixing bowl because I forgot to tell em.

I've used earthbalance before which is basically vegetable or canola oil more than once and never ever ever have botched cannabutter. The secret is not putting it in alone, you put water in there with it and you SIMMER it. Then you strain out all the weed and stick it in the fridge for a few hours...the good stuff will be on top and you will pour out the stinky sludgy junk and enjoy beautiful tasting cannabutter that you just want to put in every recipe.

I actually think the earthbalance works better than butter. Every time I use it the batch seems to turn out super strong.

Didn't this forum used to have a cannabutter megathread?

When I burnt a batch of cannabis butter I was real pissed. I had painstakingly stirred it for about an hour making sure to keep the heat medium and the butter simmering lightly but not boiling or burning. The buds were slightly browned but not burned.

Well I turned it up to high for 30 seconds (so I thought) but I was already high so I got distracted playing with my dog or some shit. When I came back the herb had turned black and the butter was brown/black too.

I was fucking pissed but I ate it anyway. Mixed it in macaroni & cheese and had to use two packets of cheese to hide the nasty taste.

The butter turned out fine. I got some of the highest high I'd ever been up until that point on that butter, I don't think any potency was lost but I didn't burn it real bad you know. Just a little bit. So yours should probably be fine.

Was with primeo bud tho.
