How long before someone could take opiates without going into withdrawal?

First off, if this is in the wrong place I apologize. Please move it to the correct forum if that is the case :)

I take oxycodone for pain - 70mg roughly a day. I had quit 3 separate times for about a month and a half to reduce my tolerance.
However, I've noticed that even after abstaining for a month, if I take a pain relieving dose for 3 days in a row and then stop, I will experience withdrawal symptoms at about 80% strength of taking them for years!
So my question is, how long would one have to abstain from opioids before they could take them without experiencing intense w/d symptoms?
I know tolerance decreases pretty slow. Will I always go into withdrawal forever now?
It's like my body just reacts the same.
I know there isn't a set amount of time but a general answer will more than suffice.

I am 5'10 150lbs and have an impressively fast metabolism.
I would like to get to a point where I could take them only for breakthrough pain but with the fast reaction of their presence and immediate withdrawal reflex I seem to have, this doesn't seem possible. H

In my experience, I have to use for about four whole days.. The withdrawals are minimal if I kept the doses minimal. I don't IV, I sniff, so that might make a huge difference. If I use for three weeks +, the withdrawals absolutely suck. I usually do a quick taper in that case which means I can still work, but the fucking bathroom time is ridiculous.

^ I for the life of me could never understand how people can use and just put themselves through minor withdrawals like that. Once I start feeling WDs I either go through them or avoid them that is to say I have had a full blown addiction twice and am currently lowering my methadone dose to get clean, for a second time. I couldnt dream of using, putting myself through minor withdrawals only to repeat a month later or whatever.

But having said that when I was clean for a year it only took a few weeks until I was using 100% again. It went from weekends to every 3 days pretty quickly, and from every 3 days it easily went to "oh i just need half a bag to keep me good" but then that became daily use. That was because i made excuses for my behavior rather then stopping or just going through WD. In my opinion the short time between casually using and being addicted after having gone through WD once makes "chipping" after being a full addict not worth it as one tiny mistake puts you back to where you were. But otherwise no one can come up with a schedule that will work for you its different for everyone.

Yup just like pugs said. The day you wake up and do not feel "right" and want to take a pill or drug. It will never be the same. I can remember like it was yesterday. Woke up. Felt bad and thought to myself "man I need a pill" next thought was "fuck, I'm hooked".

Thank you for all the feedback. I am going to try to get less of a higher dosage and explain to my doc why. I only need them for breakthrough pain. Maybe if I had like 20 mg contin I could just take one for breakthrough pain and be good for the rest of the day

Yes now that youve gotten so addicted before you will become addicted verry quickly even with moderate use. But to awnser the title someone like me who isnt addicted will take then for 3 days 4 maximum and stop and maybe some days get very very minor cold sweats but its not relly noticeable so id say 5 or 6 of continuous use to start to gain sone sort of opiate dependence.

I have just recently been prescribe 120 of 10/325 Percocet one 4x daily. I almost immediately started taking up to 6 a day and now I have 4 pills left and my next appointment is a week away. I halfed then quareterd the remaining 4 pills. I started having withdrawal symtoms last night. dry heaves, sinus drainage, horrible headache, diahrea, restless, insomnia even with ambien, anxiety, fatigue. I took 5mg this morning which helped until about 4pm then I took 2.5mg with no relief took another 2.5mg at 10pm no relief yet. I also have this horrible cough and am thinking about buying otc cheratussin w/codeine from local pharmacy with the he hope that the c odeine in it will help relieve some of my withdrawal symptoms. I will not do this to myself next month. I will take as prescribed only or less. Has anyone ever tried using the codeine cheratusssin to help with oxy withdrawal symptoms

I use to use OTC Tylenol with codeine and did a CWE to help with WD. It worked well. But sadly it just doesn't cover it now.

Heres a thought, since doctors dont know what the fuck there doing when prescribing why dont u just say u are taking the amount and take them only to get high and only like once a week to keep your tolerance at none. No need for withdrawl symptoms and ur still noddin out. Its just called willpower.
