Hip clicking?

I have had a little bit of hip problems since I was a child, but they have been acting up alot lately. I am a dancer, as you can see by my name, and this hip clicking is getting frustrating. Whenever I do any kind of high kicks, my hip clicks on the way down. It used to just click, and that's all, but now it hurts. It also used to just be on my left hip, and now it is starting on my right.

Also, the other day in dance, we were doing pirouettes. (for those of you who don't know what those are, they are spins on one leg with the opposite leg's foot up to your knee). By the time I was done with my pirouettes, my left hip was hurting so bad. I guess balancing on one leg and squeezing all of my muscles to stay up hurts my hip also.

I went to the doctor yesterday and got my hip x-rayed. They haven't gotten back to me with any results, since it's only been a day. I am getting rather impatient with this hip click-y-ness.

Can anyone take a guess as to what this may be, or what is causing it? I can get into specifics for any doctors out there... But I am really curious as to what this is. Also, I am worried that it will interfere with my dancing. Please help?

(Oh, and I don't know if this is important, but I do roll kind of frequently.)

'Fraid I don't have much to say about what's causing it or what it might specifically be, but I thought I'd chime in and say I get the same thing a lot in a variety of joints. Particularly, EVERY time I bend my knees past around 90 degrees and then straighten with weight on them (i.e., standing up from floor, squatting, that kind of thing) they both ALWAYS click. Like I can bounce out a bunch of squats in a row and they both click pretty loudly every time. It's always sort of bothered/worried me, but I haven't had any real problems with my knees so I've been telling myself it's nothing..

I also get the same thing in my elbows and shoulders sometimes, though not as frequently or consistently. Ironically, when I stood up just now to do some squats and see if my knees still do it consistently, my right hip gave a LOUD crack.

I've always assumed the mechanism behind it is similar to cracking knuckles (pressure in the fluid surrounding joints drops as you bend the joint, gases dissolved in fluid come out of solution, form bubbles, bubble pops = cracking noise), which is generally accepted as a pretty harmless thing. I don't think the clicking itself would be harmful or damaging, but whether or not the fact that your hip(s) (or my knees) click because there's something slightly off with the joints, I can't say. :/

Hope it turns out well

It's not like a joint popping though. It's like something is rubbing against something else to make that noise, and it hurts. It's hard to explain I suppose...

I get the hip click (only on the left) with pilates or any rotational movement of my leg.
It does not cause any pain.

^ I wouldn't say stop dancing, just stop doing movements that aggravate it.

OP, If I had to take a wild uneducated guess I would say you had a tight muscle somewhere, maybe one of your hip flexors. I also found this that might help you, if you can decipher all the medical talk (I cant): http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/clicking-hip.html. Maybe a trip to a competent physical therapist would help.

rolling lots hurts your joints. at least it did mine. i suppose it depends how often, but if you are like i was, its a weekly thing. which is common, but not good.

you have to take more time off between rolls. if you do, your rolls get better. if you don't, you get a sore body. its cheezy but true.

i love dance. i wish you the best of luck!

See a hip specialist.

I had problems all through my 20's and early 30's.

Now realise I've been suffering with FAI, femoro acetabular impingement, look it up, it happens to very active younger people, leads to arthritic degradation of the hip joint.

If it is FAI, they can treat it more effectively earlier.

Mine was not mdiagnosed till my late 30's, it's relatively new on the medical radar, and though they tried to save my hips, I'm just recovering from a bilateral resurfacing...it's great, really, but I wish I still had my own hips.

get onto a specialist ASAP, a good hip specialist.

Monk...x
