Hi, I live in the 303. I'm female. 'Coincidentally' is my favorite word ,though I don't believe in coincidences.'Irony' is my least favorite word.

The words are "donau steam ship drive electricity main operation work under clerk company"

Good example in that one is Betriebswerk. Betrieb means operation and Werk means work, so "operation work" becomes depot.
Sometimes the composita will entirely change what the single words in them are about.

Come to think of it: I wonder if this has anything to do with the abysmal results I ended up with when translating and old German paper on Coca plant alkaloids into English using Google Translate?

And I played around with your words in Google Translate. They don't even translate back to German and then back to English and then back to German consistently. Also interesting.

The above said and helpful hint to some: the quick link to Google Translate doesn't work the same or as well as actually opening Google Translate. Found that out the hard way.

I promised myself I was going to learn to speak Russian this year (if for no other reason, although there are a few, so that I don't have to rely on subtitles or an incompetent and annoying translator when watching MY President! 🤣 ). Fuck me. Apparently there is an ideal time in a person's life to learn a new language. It's clearly evident I passed that stage a LONG time ago! Five minutes of watching some or the other tutorial and I need a break and an Alprazolam! 🤣

I've never seen it as a real language to start with. It's too easy.
Honestly, I learned the language by watching cartoons ._: That's why my English is well.
Kinda lame, yknow xD French I've spent fucking hours cramped over books and audiobooks and all that crap to learn the language, and I still suck at it.
Italian the same fucking thing. My Italian is still pretty rough, because the language is complex as fuck.

@dalpat077 Haha, yeah Google translating German doesn't really work, because our language is too picturesque.
You will always find weird metaphors in German that are just un-translatable for anyone non-German who comes across them.
Your translating program might tell you "I think I spider/I think I'm weaving", but what the German actually said was "I think I'm going insane"

I only know English and semi fluent Spanish

I'm a freelance translator for businesses online, have been since interpreter school, that was about 7 or 8 years ago.
Spanish I learned in Spain 2012, French I learned in school, but really learned it in 2012 also, Italian I started around 1998 to impress my dad :D
English is a weird one. Half my family is American(not by blood), because a large chunk of my family died in WW2, so I've always been around the language a bit, but never really interested until much later, I'd say '08 '09 maybe is when I started.

I think people who can speak several languages are awesome and I'm a bit jealous.

True story actually.

Anal as it may come across: in my life I've taken pride in my English writing (The Queen's English) and grammar (pet bugbear is the incorrect use of the apostrophe) (told you: anal)! But it's easy to see how a language goes downhill and starts to become bastardized. In just this past year I've become slack and gotten tired of constantly fighting with spelling and grammar checkers and the like (particularly when it comes to The Queen's English vs. American English spelling and grammar). Now I just go with the flow.

Ironically and coincidentally (just a bit of a fun dig at the OP! 🤣 ): whatever spell check is active right now insists that the word "bastardised" as above is spelled with a "z" as in "bastardized". American spell checking you may say? But then: it bitches about the words "arse" and "arsehole". Now I just go with the flow i.e. when it bitches I'll either rephrase words or split them or hyphenate them. Sometimes stuff ends up looking like a dog's breakfast!

They're not really different languages, though. Once you learn Latin(which I also had in school fml) it's pretty much smooth sailing from then on out. But learning Latin is hell. We're all just essentially speaking Latin dialects, if we're being strict here, so all the languages I speak are sort of the same. I find it much more impressive to learn Russian or Chinese, yknow

You know when I went to Amsterdam and the locals spoke technically more proper English than me..


After we got to the hotel first thing I did was buy a pack of cigarettes, I said "can I get a pack of Marlboro reds.."

He slyly replied "uhhh... I think it is possible"

In reference to how I say can vs may I when asking for something

Made me think about my language.... But I don't give a shit I'll say "can I fuck your mom" for the rest of my life

Fun thing about netherlandsk. The language is partially English already.
It's a mix of English and German :) Sounds like an American is speaking German

"Ick habr nickt vorrr auf den ouese su shpeilen"

Latin? Now you're taking me back in time I'll tell you!

We here had no option but to take Latin up until Standard 7 (I don't even know what today's equivalent is now i.e. I'm guessing it's Grade 9 maybe?). Fuck it was annoying. Couldn't handle it. And I'm sure it was the lowest mark I got for any subject ever in my entire studies (including Uni.). Maybe I don't have the aptitude for languages (some are naturals at it I believe).

Bit of a side note: there's been talk for a few years of introducing Mandarin as a compulsory language to be taught in our schools. Not sure what's happened to that i.e. maybe I should look it up.

And some wonder why I hedge my bets with Russia? 🤣

Another interesting little factoid: we have no less than 11 (another bad habit I've developed here i.e. mixing text and numerals) OFFICIAL languages here. Chew on that one for a minute!

Yes someone pointed this out to me, and I'm sorry but I don't see the resemblance. Maybe if I watched a video.

Trust me dude I took a huge dose of mushrooms and got completely lost in Amsterdam. I definitely could not apply english to the street signs... I was also really high. Oh well

You have to look at the written alnguage :) It looks SO much like English.
The pronounciation and stuff is super weird, I don't understand them when they talk,
but when they write I understand every word.

O then you must know "Sloten is verboten" :D That was my favourite. Or "Te Huur"

I had the choice between Latin and Ancient Greek.
I actually wanted Greek but my dad told me there's no fucking way this will ever be useful.

Yeah Latin is hardcore, never encountered a language as complex, except for Russian, which is to certain degrees similar in cases/grammar.
Chinese is another bummer, as how you pitch your voice becomes important in what you're saying. I've been contemplating learning another language for some time, and those are the 2 I come up with. But they're so difficult.
