Heroin heroin and constipation

It depresses you nervous system. I think it also depresses you intestinal walls, making them move things along at a much slower pace than normal.

^Yeah there are opioid receptors in your intestinal walls that, when bound to by diacetylmorphine, decrease their wave-like movements (peristalsis) that is essentially the "motor" that drives your bowels to produce and excrete feces. Decreasing the speed of these proverbial gears disrupts the greater machine; constipation was always one of the most pronounced side effects of opiates for me when I was addicted to them... I have heard speculation that long-term heroin/other opioid use can increase the risk of colon cancer because waste product remains trapped in the body for long periods of time, but I cannot confirm that this is so.

Psyllium husk fiber powder will help produce bowel movements.

^ Here is another one, which is good for a few good laughs as well.

Thank you Vaya for expanding on my post. I figure that someone else might come along with a more in depth explanation, and sure enough you did.

Yeah if thats the thread I read the other day you should def read it. If you think you have it bad you will feel blessed once you read some of the stuff on there.

Constipation is the most constant side-effect of any opiate/opioid. The best thing for it is, in my experience, to use Miralax (polyethylene glycol) once a day. This always kept my bowels regular... There's not much else you can do for the constipation because it's just going to happen, for the reasons stated above.

There are (close to) hundreds of live foods in the supermarket that cost less than booger king that will keep you regular

Here is the wikipedia page on laxatives, it is a very informative list of the different types of solutions to constipation issues including foods and information on the varying types of laxatives.

Fiber seems obvious, but once you actually start taking it you will see the (big) difference. The stuff that dissolves completely is awesome, no taste and no texture change makes it really easy to add it to nearly everything. But a simple glass of water can be used to mix it as well. Highly recommended.

Stool softeners like docusate can be a great help as well. Especially when combined with fiber and plenty of water. In my experience combining the three (docustate+fiber+water) has the best results. You should be drinking plenty of water already, especially if you're constipated all the time. Gotta be hydrated.

The more harsh/stimulant laxatives should be a last resort, or only when you really need them. It's best not to depend on them of course, but they can get the job done if it's necessary.

Constipation is one of the effects of opiates that you never build a tolerance to. It just comes with the territory.

I believe that it is its effect upon acetylcholine receptors of the autonomic nervous system that causes decreased peristalsis.

Fiber will bulk the stool but has no effect upon motility.

Opioids do produce activity upon acetylcholine receptors, but the evidence for opioid receptor-induced peristaltic suspension lies primarily within activation of the kappa opioid receptors in the intestinal wall.

You are correct about fiber providing bulk without motility; bulk assists greatly in the excretion process, however, often when accompanied by a low-strength laxative (as stated above by another poster), and time and again proved invaluable to me as a former opiate addict to remediate crippling constipation.

...and to reiterate, IME "Psyllium husk" fiber laxative provides the most benefit of the fiber laxatives I have tried.
