Social Justice Here we go again: Killing of Rayshard Brooks by Atlanta police

Exactly. It's the suspect's fault for putting the cop in that situation.

Maybe people wouldn't freak out around the cops if they stopped shooting people and people like you stopped defending it.

For fucks sake. I saw the video. They grabbed him to cuff him AS they were saying he was under arrest. They gave him no time to judge intelligently either.

I've been arrested. But I was fortunate enough to be arrested in Australia (and be a white female rather than a black male). I wasn't handcuffed for probably 20 minutes after I was arrested, and even then I was only handcuffed while they transported me. They uncuffed me immediately after.

But most American cops have totally forgotten that they're supposed to be public servants, and people like you have let them.

For the record, I was arrested for the same thing as this guy, driving under the influence (heroin though not alcohol, and I was actually driving not presumed to have been recently driving like this guy).

What the cops did was ILLEGAL. It is ILLEGAL to shoot a fleeing man who doesn't pose an immediate risk to your life.

The cops are not above the fucking law. Stop telling them that they are.

Maybe cops wouldn't be so suspicious of specific individuals if they weren't such violent criminals:

"Rayshard's Brooks criminal history includes multiple violent felonies. (The media isn't reporting on this and I had to pull the case history myself.)
That explains why police called for back-up.
Man oh man the media left some pretty huge details out of this story.

- Felony Cruelty to Children
- Battery, Family Violence
- False Imprisonment
Violent felonies going back years, including beating his family and kids. But yeah can't imagine why officer called for back-up and didn't just let him go with a Taser on him."

^Personally, I do not give a fuck if he is dead if he has a history of hurting children.

Yet his behaviors do not require a death sentence. Not in a civilized country. There may still be hope.

Perhaps the media left it out because they rightly determined it's irrelevant.

You can expect that the jury won't hear about it either if/when that cops brought to trial.

It doesn't matter who he was. There are laws and of all people the police should be expected to follow them. But astoundingly there seem to be people here who think the police following the laws they enforce on everyone else is entirely optional.

You don't have to care that he's dead. In all honesty, it's not like I knew him, I don't inherently care that he's dead either, I care that the cops be subject to the same laws and expectations as the rest of us. If anything they should be held to an even higher standard.

Thanks for editing your comment Jess that hurt my feelings a little.

His record is very relevant when it comes to how police will deal with him. This is basic common sense. If someone has no record vs someone who has a rap sheet of violent crime then the police are going to approach the suspect differently. Call it 'law-abiding citizen privilege'.

It doesn't matter who he was.
Yes it does matter but what matters most is his attitude and actions.

Yes but the police are understandably afforded some leeway when it comes to doing their jobs. For eg if someone had a gun and was shooting at you then the cops are not only allowed to but they have an obligation to kill that person - and you would be glad for them to do so.

I really dislike how ridiculous this debate has gotten because it makes it looks like I'm sucking cop dick - however - police do put their lives on the line each day. They have families to go home to and I dare say the vast majority care for their families much better than the average violent criminal they arrest. If it comes down to the cop's life or the violent criminal's life then generally we should be siding with the cop. So don't put police into that position whereby they fear for their lives simply through the process of doing their jobs, enforcing the law and keeping entitled people safe.

K guys I mean yea it's sad and sure they didnt need to kill him but what do u fucking expect when u fight with them and are non compliant and grab their weapon. U try tazing the pig with his own tazer like yea.. they shot him. He didnt deserve to be killed, course not. But I mean what do you fucking expect. Shits a joke.

Lots of people have made this point. And you know, it's not wrong, the guy could so easily have made smarter choices and walked away breathing, I believe that.

But what's the point in pointing that out? Is it that those of us who are angry about it shouldn't be? Cause I don't accept that at all.

U can be mad or whatever but just be real about it lol

for the cops to follow their training?
for the cop not to shoot a person in the back who posed no threat to anyone?
for the cops to have called an Uber for him, given him a ticket, and had his car towed?
for the cops to let him go, call in backup and set up a perimeter?

Go check out how many children are killed by drunk drivers each year
