First of all I'd say I'm a hypochondriac. I go throughl cycles of being preoccupied with worry about having diseases. I had oral thrush for a while and it went away while I was incarcerated and then came back when I was out, most likely back because of smoking. I saw it was linked to HIV infection and worried myself sick until I finally got tested and found out I was negative. For some reason now I've been worrying about having hepatitis. The time of my life 2 to 3 years ago is pretty hazy to me now, basically a whirl of sniffing coke, heroin, and drinking. I can't recall sharing a straw or bill with someone with a bloody nose but I think it's entirely possible I have and have seen it's possible to contract hepatitis this way. I will get tested soon and put my mind at ease but how long does it take from contracting it to test positive? I had a battery of tests done a couple of years ago after my liver enzymes were out of whack and I assume tests for hepatitis were done, there have been relatively few risky behaviors since then.

Have any of you heard of people getting hepatitis from sharing straws or dollar bills?

i think your chances are next to nil. relax.

sorry, i had to write something proper before saying i literally lol'd at "hepatits".

I wouldn't say that the chances are slim, especially if the circles you were in were sketchy (not to say that hepatitis discriminates). I only saw the latest figures for Australia several days ago and there has been a massive explosion in the last 5 years. The same risk factors are highlighted such a IV users but they also have seen a spike due to an increase in tattoos particularly backyard operations. In theory any blood to blood contact is possible so yes sharing a straw with a blood nose is a risk. Also it can sometimes take years for symptoms to appear.

After all that bad news I would just add the only way to know is to get tested and stop doing risky things.

i have hep c from my X slut girlfriend....i did use a needle on newyears she said was never used so idk if i got it elsewhere. ive never shot anything with other people so who knows. you can def get it from a straw if you have even a slight break in the nose and the other users dont need a full blown bloody nose to contract it......just chill man get, tested now cause catchin it early will only help you to rid it later.

Yeah, it's all a bit hazy. One of the guys I'd sniff with I'd say is a nympho (what guys isn't) and is probably in triple digits as far as women he's been with. A few other sketchballs, too.

It's funny how some say hardly an chance and a few say it's something to worry about. Anyways, aside from just having it would suck but also stopping drinking would suck too.

seriously how far up yer nose are you stickin them notes? really, i think the chances are low, but getting checked won't make your torso fall off, so be sure and get that check before you jump the gun and plan out your life assuming a positive result.

:)

if blood gets involved, you can get hep. meaning if someones bleeding in their nose and you share a straw with them, you can get hep. apparently it's very apparent that people get it by sharing straws and needles.

When your drunk you really don't think twice about sharing a bill and sticking it far up your nose. I also see it's more prevalent in Hispanic american and I used with many in that group. I'm a bit baffled how it's prevalent in almost 2% of U.S. population I didn't think that many people shared needles (you can get them OTC most places!) or from dirty tattoo equipment. I can't help but worry.

i think that's a fine poker hand you hold, so i'm not going to raise any more. check! ;)

im the same mate, if something is in the tinyest bit wrong i have every disease known to man.
shit when i suffered from anxiety i thought i had brain cancer, diabetees, leaukemia everything, turns out was just a bad case of anxiety along with derealisation.

as for the hep c, most people have answered that. if you gona share implaments make sure its in between a very close knit bunch of friends.

A friend of mine actually got it from sharing bills, but he was a massive cokehead though, probably shared bills/straws with dozens of people, since then I've always used McDonalds/Burger King straws, it scared me a bit, before that I never thought you could catch something like that.

I see someone watched House yesterday ;)

Or is it just a coincidence?

Either way, it is possible for this to occur although it is a rarity.

I'd just set your mind at ease and get specifically tested to be sure. You are likely correct however, if liver enzymes were highly elevated they would be very likely to check for hepatitis.

Yes you can get Hep C from sharing snorting instruments like straws or rolled up bills.

You're way more likely to get Hep C from sharing IVs/rigs/works, from sharing piercing needles/toothbrushes or nail clippers, and from unprotected anal sex, and from rimming but it can happen from sharing snorting instruments.

It is a lot easier to get Hep C and Hep B than HIV. Fortunately there is a Vaccination for Hep A and Hep B and you can get those.

If you're worried that you have Hep C or share snorting instruments or IVs get tested for Hep C. I do this yearly since I am apparently in an at risk category since I have sex with men.

I see where you're coming from with this, but for the sake of harm reduction DO NOT SHARE GEAR at all, period. You don't know what even your closest friend might have that you don't...until you share something and find out the hard way. Even if the "close knit bunch" doesn't have something, after you share equipment it'll probably stay in the back of your mind until you finally get checked, at least it did with me. IF you have to use a used needle, I would use bleach for a while AND then use hydrogen peroxide and finally hot water to clean it out and even then there's still a possibility of contamination depending on how thorough you are. But don't even do that unless you're gonna do what your're gonna do regardless. At least it will give you a fighting chance. I wasn't trying to belittle your advice but I just felt for the interest of harm reduction I needed to throw that out that the only needle is an unused, packaged, clean needle /soapbox
