I'm allergic, to differing degrees, to spring, summer, and fall. I've tried everything otc. I just build a tolerance in a few days. Same with scrips, and they're damn spendy, so I haven't tried them all. I can't afford to keep going back for another scrip that doesn't work. Has anyone found a scrip, or an alternative treatment, that really works?

WHY can't I build a tolerance to the ALLERGENS??! Is there anything I can do to make my body quit rebelling against benign substances??

Have you tried Singulair? That works for me, but when it's REALLY bad out, pollen and dust wise, I'll still get symptoms, but that's a good maintenence drug. It's a leukotriene blocker, and there's no drowsiness or anything like that. I'd suggest that. Astelin is a prescription nasal spray that's an anti-histamine, that worked really well for me too. Anti-histamines are the drugs that most people think of when they think of allergy meds, but they also have the drowsiness and some other unpleasant side-effects. I know my mother doesn't react well to claritin, it alters her mood for the worse, and benadryl works really well for clearing up symptoms, but it's hard to get much done throughout the day when you take a bunch of benadryl.

Maybe try a steroid like Veramyst, which is another nasal spray, and prednisone is a good standby. Steroids are only to be used for a short period of time though, like 2 weeks at the very most for allergies. They get rid of my asthma and allergies when everything else doesn't cut it, and my body stays better for a pretty long period of time afterwards.

There's another category of drug that I used to be on called Mast Cell stabalizers. I was on Intal for a while. This is kind of like an anti-histamine, but instead of blocking the receptor site, they prevent/reduce the release of histamines in the first place. They aren't known to have as many unwanted side-effects as anti-histamines. Intal also helped keep my airways open a bit, it's got some moderate anti-inflammatory effects, which is always welcome.

Also I got on a series of allergy shots, the shots didn't cost anything except 20 bucks copay per visit. I got a series of 5 shots every other week. 20 bucks every two weeks might be a lot, but my asthma and allergies were terrible before I started them, and now they're pretty managable. They gave me Xolair, which reduces your bodies sensitivity to asthma triggered by environmental allergens. If you don't have asthma then Xolair won't do much, if anything, for you. Once I was on Xolair for about 3 months they started me on traditional allergy shots, which is a solution with a small amount of the allergens that affect you, and it builds up your immunity.

So yeah, that's my history with allergy medications. Which drugs did you try? Also what symptoms are your worst? Sometimes simple things like saline spray, eye-drops that don't have any medications, or just washing your face and getting lots of water, works wonders when countering an allergic reaction.
Also I just googled "allergy medicines" and went to WebMD, and they give a very good overview of all your options.

allergy shots would be the best if meds are not working

My allergies used to be horrible. I was allergic to everything according to testing about 4 years ago. Hives and nasal symptoms that contributed to asthma. I don't take medications anymore. Even after we moved to a city which surrounded by mountains. Everyone around here calls it the allergy bowl. I have found cleaning up my diet (rarely do I ingest anything artificial) and exercising may have helped. If it is a placebo effect, I'll take it! I can't breathe out of my nose when I run in the woods but isn't so bad that I can't handle it. I don't take meds unless I really have to.

have you tried using a neti pot? i don't use one personally but several people i know use one and all say it helped their allergies?
Cleaning up your diet and using the neti pot were two suggestions I was going to bring to the table, in addition to trying some OTC generic for Claritan Loratadine (thanks tenshu2k, below me, for reminding me of what that is called!). However, the neti pot does not help with future allergies--It will just help clear out your sinuses of what you already have up there. :P

I have seasonal allergies, but I find I only need to medicate when pollen count is very high.

Loratadine (Claritin/Alavert) works for most days.

On the worst days I use the Allegra (Fexofenadine). The rx version has Pseudoephedrine, which helps a lot with congestion and such.

In general though, I try to avoid medicating unless my symptoms are severe.

LOCAL RAW BEE POLLEN

I made that so annoyingly big because it works so well!!!! It HAS to be local to work properly.

Clean up your diet, go outside when your symptoms are at their least annoying. Try to get your body slowly used to being outside.

I think we all sneeze during specific seasons to varying degrees. I sneeze and get a runny nose when there is pollen floating around. It's like dust; if it goes up your nose, you sneeze. No need to fight the natural tendencies. Just clean yourself up and get your body used to it (slowly, of course, don't just go out there and stand in a pollen bed all day).

if i didn't fight my body's natural tendencies my quality of life would be rapidly approaching zero. ever sneeze 60 or 70 times in a row? it's not fun. i used to spend the summer with a low grade fever, with my eyes and tongue and throat itchy, feeling like i had gotten punched in the head daily, sore neck and back from sneezing, congested 90% of the time. FUCK THAT.

But how is your diet? Is your diet pretty shitty? Then your health is probably going to suffer and that ill health may be manifesting itself as seasonal allergies.

Ever hear of Dermatographia? Image search it. It's not fun to live with. I got it around the same time I started to eat A TON of processed foods. My diet went from cooking eggs or having hashbrowns and a meat-based protein in the morning, a packed-lunch from home, and a home-cooked dinner mostly from scratch, to a Pop Tart or two (or even four) while going out the door, a Bear Claw or two at school, school lunch (typically two things of French Fries), and a Rice-a/Pasta-Roni type dinner. Oh, and plenty of ice cream and white enriched pasta in the evening. Anyways. I cleaned up my diet and woah, where did my Dermatographia go? It vanished.

If your diet isn't the greatest, I highly suggest attempting to clean it up a little before socking more money into allergy meds that might not even work.

If your diet IS halfway decent, no offense was meant at all by the above. :P

(BTW, michael, I realized after typing this out that you're not the OP, but I feel everyone could benefit from getting rid of heavily processed foods in their diet.)

Check out one of the threads I created recently, it should apply to you. It's about chronically blocked noses, but I suffer from exactly what you mention. It's a constant hassle to feel comfortable as the seasons change.

Thanks for your responses, eveyone! I have an appointment today, and I'm going to ask about the non-antihistimine things you guys have suggested, since I just seem to build a tolerance to antihistimines, and even if they do half-ass work (dry out my mouth and eyeballs, but my nose still runs) they never address the horrible ITCH in my eyes, ears, nose, throat....seems almost like my brain itches sometimes!

I can address some dietary issues as well.......been taking shortcuts in the kitchen lately due to having a new baby....ecxecise level went in the toilet for the same reason. I hadn't put that together with worse-than-usual allergies, but it makes sense.

Bought a neti pot. It seems to help for a few minutes, but it's kind of a pain. I'm looking for a local beekeeper, too. No luck so far. Really sparse population up here. Wondering about maybe starting my own hive? It can't be that hard.....

I'm sure it's a pain in the ass though. Especially because you have to wear the suit and stuff. You can't just say "hello, bees. I'm taking your sweet nectar!" I don't think they'll take that kindly.

while my diet isn't the greatest, it is not all that bad. while i do eat some processed food i try to avoid it as much as possible. i am really not exaggerating when i say that flonase saved my life (while i wouldn't have actually killed myself, it has improved my life many times over).

Well if you are having allergic rhinitis, I would try Spirulina. There is a study out that showed that it helped many allergy suffers with allergic rhinitis. I have a deviated septum and enlarged turbinate and am having surgery in a few months. However, in the mean time, I have to deal with some pretty bad congestion. Spirulina works reasonable well for me and more so than any other medicine I have tried.

This is what I was going to suggest. I was having some bad seasonal allergies lately and read the same thing that you did, probably. I felt immediate relief. It does however have side effects potentially- usually only in high doses, which I took (I like the taste.). The side effect that I got was sort of a dizziness. You shouldn't have an issue though if you pay attention to the recommended dosage. It honestly works really well. Had a sore throat from allergies, and strange sinus awareness- and generally felt crappy. This took it away.. and suddenly I was ... outward.

Another thing that I was going to bring up is fish oil, or at least including some high omega 3 fish in your diet. This past spring I had been practicing a vegan diet, and was miserable. I decided to take a sip of some fish oil I had- but discontinued using, and immediately the pain went away.

This is one of the biggest things that I'd recommend, is fish oil. No flax, no hemp. It's not the same for allergies... even if they have omega 3 (in my experience).
