I've been using recreationally for almost 10 years and I never had anything like this happen. Two nights ago I was drinking alcohol throughout the day and drank a bottle of Waltussin. Off brand Robitussin. Just one bottle to relax and take my mind off things. Years ago I would generally down 3 and 1 is basically nothing. I had also taken an adderall a few hours before that as I'm prescribed. And took my seroquel when I was ready for sleep.

Out of nowhere my forearm cramps up. It was painful. Than the rest of the left side of my body cramps up. Than my heart started racing to the extreme and my whole body received this burning sensation. Than I became extremely weak. More so on one side of my body. I could barely move my arm. I felt paralyzed. My roomate literally had to put a glass of water to my lips so I could drink because I was to weak to pick it up. Than my speech became impaired. This was not because I was high. At this point the Tussin had almost worn off. I thought for sure I was going to die. It was off and on too. One second I'm in terrible pain and feel like I'm dying and than 10 second later I'd be fine. And than it would come back with a vengeance. I thought it was maybe a stroke. But when the ambulance finally arrived and got to the hospital whatever was occurring almost over. When I told them I had taken DXM they blew off everything I said was happening to me and thought it was all in my head and that I was having a bad trip. I've taken DXM hundreds of times and 3x the amount of what I took that night. I was damn near sober when this all happened. Anyone know what could have caused this? I only had 1 adderall, 1 seroquel, 1 tussin, and not much to drink hours earlier. Combination maybe? But I''ve had that combination many times. But either way It was terrifying. Regardless I won't be taking DXM ever again.

This was not solely because you took DXM, it's because you mixed it with amphetamine. DXM is far from a selective NMDA antagonist (actually it's its metabolite DXO that is around 10 times more potent than the parent compound as a dissociative). It's also a potent inhibitor of serotonin and noradrenaline transporters, much more potent as that than an NMDA antagonist. Amphetamine is mostly a releaser of dopamine and noradrenaline, and serotonin to a much lesser extent. Your reaction seems like a synergistic interaction between DXM's and amphetamine's effects on monoamines levels. Blocking NMDA channels also has an effect on your heart slowing down your heart rate and blood pressure. NMDA antagonists are depressants.

Don't ever mix drugs that you're not sure about and remember that mixing any drugs is potentially dangerous. If you are in doubt about anything, please post a question here and I'm sure you will get an answer, so you can avoid unnecessary risk.

Take care!

uhhh... alcohol, adderall, dxm and seroquel.

the reaction wasn't from the dxm, it was from the mix of all these drugs. adderall and dxm in themselves are hugely contradicted, let alone when you throw some alcohol in there.

serotonin syndrome (though to be honest it doesn't sound like that). it sounds like you were having a "mini stroke" so to speak, or near to having a full blown stroke.

I somehow missed the part about alcohol. Well, alcohol and Seroquel are depressants. You could stop breathing or you could have a stroke or a heart attack. I think you can consider yourself very lucky. I hope you've learnt the lesson for the rest of your life.

Thanks for the input. It was a big wake up call. I'm just grateful I'm alive. What was hard is when I was trying to explain my symptoms at the hospital but I couldn't put sentences together and was slurring every word. It was very frustrating. I was trying so hard to explain to them "I AM NOT HIGH". Please just tell me what happened to me. I felt like my speech was never going to recover. The more I talked the less they believed me.

well thank god you went to the hospital, who the hell knows what could've happened otherwise. i'm not surprised you couldn't put sentences together and were also slurring. to me it sounds like you're a very lucky person to be alive. please do more research into combining drugs (even if they are legal and you've done them thousands of times before on their own) as quite a lot have potentially fatal interactions.

i'm not a medical doctor, but perhaps if you can describe some more of the symptoms you were having at the hospital i could shadow a guess at it? from what it sounds like at the moment is a stroke/seizure.

impaired speech, auditory distortions, and general weakness sound quite a lot like stroke type symptoms, but at the same time sound a lot like seizure symptoms at the same time.

did you notice any cardiac symptoms? sweating? visual distortions? blurred vision? feeling of numbness in one side of the body?

Sounds very much like you had a stroke. You should be extra careful, strokes can reoccur. You should get checked by a Doctor.

No, no cardiac symptoms accept for maybe when my heart would start beating fast and I got that burning sensation I saw what I can best describe as sparkly, colorful patterns. But it would go away quickly. And I almost didn't go to hospital. I waited it out for awhile before I finally had to shout for my roomate. I didn't want to tell him because I didn't want him to know I was on something and further more I didn't want my family finding out. They have had one to many of those phone calls. Finally I couldn't handle it anymore and I gave in.

in my opinion it sounds like you either suffered from a stroke or a mini stroke. you're extremely lucky to be alive frankly.

if i were you i'd go and have a thorough check at the doctors, and definitely stay away from all drugs in the meantime. the reason i mention this is because:

F.A.S.T.

The main signs and symptoms of a TIA can be identified by remembering the word F.A.S.T., which stands for Face-Arms-Speech-Time.

Face – the face may have fallen on one side, the person may be unable to smile, or their mouth or eye may have dropped
Arms – the person may not be able to raise both their arms and keep them there due to weakness or numbness in their arms
Speech – the person may have slurred speech
Time – if any of these signs or symptoms are present, it is time to dial 999 immediately

you seem to have suffered from just about every single one of these symptoms.

I strongly advise you to do some research on strokes as I think you've described the symptoms of a transient ischemic attack (TIA, also known as 'mini stroke').

Start here:

http://www.stroke.org/site/PageServer?pagename=tia

Or at least read this:

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is an event, sometimes called a mini-stroke, with stroke symptoms that last less than 24 hours before disappearing. While TIAs generally do not cause permanent brain damage, they are a serious warning sign of stroke and should not be ignored!
...
Up to 40 percent of all people who have experienced a TIA will go on to have an actual stroke. Most studies show that nearly half of all strokes occur within the first two days after a TIA. In fact:

  • Within two days after a TIA, 5 percent of people will have a stroke.
  • Within three months after a TIA, 10 to 15 percent of people will have a stroke
What are the symptoms of a TIA?

The symptoms of a TIA and stroke are basically the same. Someone having a TIA or stroke may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness loss of balance or coordination

So even if the stroke was brought on by the drug combination I took it can return if I'm sober and not taking anything?

If you have suffered a TIA, that may indicate an underlying health issue which could lead to a serious stroke and permanent brain damage or death. There are various causes of strokes but usually they're caused by blood clots. The drugs may have been a trigger for your episode, I don't know. But strokes can happen at any age and I honestly think you should be concerned enough to investigate this, ignoring it could have consequences.

Yes, this sounds like a mini-stroke.........there are people that have had mini-strokes & never did anything about it & life went on. If you're a healthy person, more than likely, you will recover most of the time but be sure you get plenty of rest, drink plenty of liquids & eat healthy.

When you feel up to it, walk around the block & slowly get back on track.

Rest, eating well & drinking plenty of liquids is everything & try not to get into any situations where it will cause you anxiety.

And definitely stay away from all drugs for like 6 months to a year unless you're prescribed something.

We can only guess but like everyone else I highly suggest consulting a real doctor. Maybe even leave the dxm part out. Just because docs tend to blow drug users off.
