I've not been to the gym since March. I've lost all the weight I managed to gain.

I need to start a routine...but can't find the energy or motivation to do so.
I also find the big macho people at the gym a bit intimidating.

Help and guidance, anyone?

1. Are you eating enough, or "right"? If you aren't getting enough energy and nutrition from food, there is no way your body and brain are going to seriously contemplate exercise.

2. Is there a particular time of day that you can set aside to go to the gym (doesn't have to be every day, maybe every second day, or any 3-4 days a week) and arrange everything around that particular time? Get your gym gear sorted out the night before and have it all laid out or packed in your gym bag before you even go to bed.

3. Don't let those machos dictate/have an effect on YOUR own fitness regime! Most of them are too preoccupied with their own reflection in the mirrors/windows, and with how many kgs they're lifting etc. ;)

4. A psychologist once said to me that it takes about 4-6 weeks to solidly form a habit. If you can set some kind of a goal for yourself that involves regular gym attendance over a period of 4-6 weeks that will help.

You know it's a real shame that as soon as people look and see you have muscles they instantly think you must be a dick. That, or they think you must be an idiot. It's a real shame.
Those "macho" guys you see in the gym are probably some of the friendliest you will ever meet. Ask them for help...they will respect you if you sincerely request a little guidance instead of trying too hard to impress them and worrying what they think. They will help you out with form and correct execution no doubt, so just honestly ask them for a bit of guidance,

Look pal, you've already done pretty much the hardest part and that's realising that you need to make some change. Now it's about instigating.

HERE IS THE FUN PART! THIS IS WHERE YOU BEGIN ON THE PATH TO NOT ONLY LOOKING BETTER, BUT SELF-DISCOVERY AND GAINING INNER STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE YOU NEVER KNEW LURKED BEHIND THERE. (Don't worry, i'm not trying to sell you anything)
You will undoubtedly despise it at first, find it difficult, lack the motivation and drive but trust me when I say that you will eventually grow to love it. I have personally trained a few folk and can say that each and every one ended up loving it after a few weeks.

First and foremost, you gotta outline some clear goals - what do you want to do? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you "don't want to get too big, want some nice muscle definition and want to (forgive me, Lord, for uttering this dreadful word) 'tone' up a bit"?
I don't know how much you know about resistance training, nutrition and whatnot so will await a reply before I spout off too much that doesn't really apply here.

The hardest part is making yourself go in the first place. Of course you can just sit here at the computer or in front of the TV and do fuck all. Anybody can do that. Hell, most folk do that every fucking night. What makes you different is that you go out there and you do it. You hit the gym despite every fibre in your being saying "I cannae be fucked", you do it even though you don't want to. In spite of this, you do it anyway and you make yourself proud by doing it.
Think of it like this:
Every single time you go to the gym, you are gaining a little bit more strength. Each and every visit is adding another brick to the wall of inner strength and tenacity you are building in your mind. In turn, making it easier and easier to get yourself motivated to do it.
You remember when you were a child and had boundless energy to do anything and everything? That didn't disappear. It just got covered up with bad habits and inevitable laziness. Hell, we all get lazy in our teen years at some point. But what makes you stand out is when you take the stand to do something about it.
There is no doubt in my mind that you have it in you to get back in that gym and go for it with all your god damn might. Of course, it's gonna take a bit of work...but boy is it worth it. A couple months down the line, when you see a 6pack and those sexy party musclez staring back at you in the mirror, you're gonna smile and wonder why you ever worried about it.

I gotta run out the door. I'll be back to check what you're crack is.

Take it easy pal
