NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

Wow, 11/11/73. I've had my cassette of that show since 1978. And I'm sure my brother had it for a few years before that. The Dark Star is very jazzy. I love this show. Thanks for reminding me! Absolute gold is a great assessment.

Terrapin Station was the best studio album they put out.

>I made a mistake, but im all good now<.

you're about to get banned, bro.

and american beauty and workingman's dead eat terrapin station for lunch.

Mars Hotel has a few really strong songs on it (Scarlet Begonias, Loose Lucy.) I always considered their non-archive (Vault & Dick's Picks) live albums to be studio albums because of all the, ahem, sweetening and corrections (esp. vocally. Donna, I'm looking at you.) Europe 72 and Skullfuck IMHO are the best of those. But my favorite era is the one drummer era, 71-74, so what do I know? Peace.

grateful dead fans: would you like them if they weren't counter-culture icons?

let's say the grateful dead dressed like all the other country bands, played country music festivals etc. and you couldn't get good drugs at their shows. instead of being a hippy band. would you like them?

i ask because i'm truly baffled as to their wide appeal amongst psychedelic drug users, i don't find anything psychedelic about their music.

i don't really know how to answer this, other than saying, yes.

i like all kinds of music and go to all kinds of shows, most deadheads do as well. for the most part, i think deadheads are probably the biggest group of musical snobs you'll ever find. snobs because of their passion for all things music.

as far as them not being musically psychedelic, i'll just say i disagree. big time.

Dark Star
The Other One
Playing In The Band (the jams in the middle)
many other songs, in many different segue orders, feature many psychedelic meltdowns and jams. Psychedelia wasn't what they were all about (they drew on too many different types of music to be JUST a psychedelic band. I like to think of them as the ultimate American Music band.) But it was indelibly woven into the fabric of what they were all about.

Anyone in Boulder for the free SCI show on Monday? :)

Its been too long..

its probable that you just haven't heard their psychedelic stuff, they stopped being an overtly psychedelic band sometime in mid-1969, and never really went back to that.

check out the 2/27-3/02/69 fillmore west run (it was released as a box set). it is literally the most overtly psychedelic music i have ever heard in my life, and represents the true peak of their psychedelic era. their later music is also psychedelic, but only in the sense that any other great music is, not purposefully so.

i'm glad they didn't get too hung up on the psychedelic stuff tbph, that is just a small part of what makes that band so special. the truly special part is their ability to incorporate diverse influences and mash them up into an artform that is totally unique and their own.

for the most part, i think deadheads are probably the biggest group of musical snobs you'll ever find. snobs because of their passion for all things music.

i agree and definitely feel you on that point, although its really less of a snobbishness and more that most deadheads seem to have a musician's ability to instinctually recognize when something musically groovy is happening (even those deadheads who aren't themselves musicians). i think in a sense, the grateful dead's music is like... very obvious music. in the sense that you can immediately tell when something special is going on, it doesn't have to be explained at all, everybody is kind of just on the same page. and this trains deadheads to recognize those moments in other music that may not be so obvious.

I like to think of them as the ultimate American Music band

i definitely agree. to me, the grateful dead represents the true spirit of america. not in any bullshit patriotic sense, but in that they did something totally unique that also payed homage to an extremely diverse array of influences, and did so with a palpable sense of adventure. that is america to me.

do it br0, perfect acid music

go with 3/2 imho -- best version of the eleven ever played

but then again 3/1 has a hey jude encore with pigpen singing out of key and the best dark star ever (well maybe second to 9/19/70). so its a hard decision

also for that matter, everybody should for sure check out 9/19/70. it is far and away my favorite dead show. it gets off to an admittedly slow start, then dark star goes silent for a while, and there's sort of some random sporadic space noises, and then jerry does that thing he does where's he's like "okay enough screwing around, we're going in this direction now, so everybody scramble to get there with me" and it just takes off into the most epic continuous jam set i've ever heard. very minimalist (one drummer, no keyboards), but just... so perfect. this was actually played the night jimi hendrix died and they had just found out before they went on, so i often wonder how that played into their performance if at all.
