NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

Wow. It took me a few weeks to get back here.

Saturday, October 1st, 2011. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus. That show was fucking unbelievable. First set was like a 7/10, and second set an 11/10. This was really the best show I've seen, with Broomfield '10 coming in second, and I've been seeing them since '09. They got so psychedelic in there! Eclipse opener, St. Stephen, Eleven, Mountain song, Morning Dew with a cautiondarkstarplayingintheband mix-up sandwich explosion. It took me days to collect my head. The crowd was so spun I hardly saw anyone jumping, dancing, or singing. I got around the venue a bit, and the vibes were just insane, thick allll over.

For an experience of this psychedelia, listen to the recording of (the best) caution, and others (dark star). When they build up the all you need, and then stop(first time starts around 2:20), everyone thought it was the end of the song or set. Like they put on the same lights as they do when the song ends. Then it comes back with a lot of energy and fast, the looks on people's faces were ridiculous.

Great fuckin' show. Ahhhhh, really really great. Other two nights were really good too, with Sunday being next in my opinion, but my favorite memory is Reuben and Cherise, as I wanted it for so long.
 
Friend, an old tour buddy flew in from Cali to catch Widespread Panic here in Detroit Sat nite. He brought me along. Great show. I didnt know the band really but when they played the first few chords to Fairies Wear Boots I was pretty invested. Encore included New Speedway Boogie which also rocked. They had me dancin like the regular fool I was when I was 20 watching the Dead.

Great band. My friends went down to Ohio to catch the next nites show. Forgot to ask him about the set list.
 
Lightitup, you said The Dead played St Stephen? It almost seems to be sacrilegous to play that without Jerry. Glad they are though. It was every Deadheads wetdream to hear that song when Jer was around. As i read, the last it was played was in 83.

glad you had fun, pigpen. i've seen panic around 150 times. when mikey died in 2002 i really slowed the train down, because he was panic. hell, the name widespread panic is in reference to him because he use to have horrible panic attacks about playing in front of crowds.

jimmy herring is a sick guitarist, but i don't feel like he fits the band like mikey did. but it's still a very good time. they started in the 80's playing a lot of dead covers, but with the exception of cream puff war, quit playing dead songs all together until this year because it's their 25th anniversary tour and they're going on a indefinite hiatus after this year.

do ya'll remember jazz is dead? jimmy herring, alphonso johnson, billy cobham and t lavitz. ironically, t lavitz was the original keyboardist for panic. R.I.P. T!

i use to see these guys a lot. all instrumental. they were awesome. i was wearing a jazz is dead shirt when i got a dui in statesboro, ga years ago and the black cop was like, "jazz aint dead white boy"....then i explained to him what it was all about and he got a kick out of it.

the dead is my favorite band of all-time. i could go on and on about the dead, but if i had to narrow it down to one song, i'd pick ramble on rose. i'm too young to have ever seen the dead but when i saw DSO for the first time tripping my face off, ramble on rose brought me to my knees.

Yes, they played St. Stephen. I've seen Furthur do it 3 times now, and although each was good this one was actually ON FIRE. There are a lot of songs that some people would consider 'blasphemous' at the shows, but most of them don't show up then. I'll tell you I have only pure joy and love when I see these musicians play, so I am grateful for every note I hear while they are still around.

That looks like a way fun show! Wish I was not halfway across the country...Melvin Seals and Kimock are coming through for 3 nights this weekend, I'll probably check that out.

Also, JGB is playing a little bar a little bit away for 3 nights on NYE! I'll hopefully be there if I'm not in San Francisco.
 
there's no better show out there than melvin seals

i've caught him 4 times over the last year and a half

everytime the music is tight, joyful, filled with dancing....and the crowds are small, and full of energy which i <3

It's not like it's hard to download the official releases for free, and they always sound amazing.
