Is it technology possible for the Sony Playstation 4 graphics to be better than what they are now? If so why would Sony produce a inferior console

This is soooooo a borderline troll thread. We'll see...

*Both consoles (Xbox One & PS4) have been out for ~5 months. Last generation lasted 7? years. Neither one of these machines has even begun to hit its stride. Impossible to judge overall capability at this point.

*Sure it could be better, but what are the trade offs? Increased size, increased heat, cost, etc.?

*Inferior to what?

Was referring to PS4, not Xbox One. What is the reason why game producers distribute games that have inferior graphics to what they can produce. Better graphics make a better gaming experience. Trade offs, increased size, of what the console? Increased heat and cost would cause a issue?

Now I'm getting a bit confused. Are we talking about the hardware or the software? Both relate to cost. For software, it can range from things like programmer/designer ability, limitations of the engine (fancy speak for program the game is built on), budgetary constraints, etc. Mainly budget most likely. It's incredibly expensive to make a game. Can't do it all and still hope to make money.

Better graphics make a better gaming experience.

That's a wonderful opinion. I wholeheartedly disagree.

Of course. To make the machine more powerful, you need more expensive parts. They also tend to generate more heat. That means the machine has to be bigger (see gaming desktop PCs for example) or you have to increase costs even more to get smaller parts. In the end, the business (Sony) has to decide if they'll be able to even sell the console. If it costs $2000, for example, how many less people will be able to afford it? Will it sell? These are the concerns they consider.

It is simply a cost benefit balance. Sure you can construct a PC that gives you better faster games, but the bread and butter gaming public would not be willing to shell out +$2000 for the console.

the game's engine is more important than the hardware in this regard

the PS4 basically has a Radeon 7870 for a GPU when you break it all down just not in the traditional form (due to physical limitations obviously) and that is enough to run more or less any game out right now on at least high settings. Of course the hardware could be better, but it doesnt have to be?

Dealing with graphics I was talking about the hardware in the console, hardware is what's principally responsible for the graphics right? As One Thousands Words said , it is basically just business the reason why the graphics are not as good. Wicked702 , better graphics are better on your eyes.

Better hardware will give a developer more power out of the gate. But squeezing oit every last clock cycle takes considerable programmer effort and time. But at the same time, they're in a hurry to get their games out to keep their companies profitable. So, they'll release games before their game engines have maxed out the hardware.
