Hey all

Does anyone know a good solicitor who specialises in drugs cases based in Perth? I got a mate (no, really) who seriously needs to have a consult with a lawyer who specialises in drug cases.

Back story - the guy was a small time dealer 10 years ago, but he got out of the game because he became really paranoid - he started thinking the cops were onto him, had a whole lot of stories about near misses and the like...most of them didn't sound remotely plausible to me, but hey it prompted him to get out of the game so that was a positive - I don't have a problem with dealers but I'd prefer it if my good mates weren't dealing. He was never busted or even arrested, got out completely clean.

Anyway, fast forward 10 years and he's got himself a lucrative FIFO job and he's making a lot more money than he ever did flipping dope. He's still a recreational user though, and kept (very) small quantities of a few staples in his home for his personal use. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago he started getting REALLY paranoid that the cops were on to him again. A particularly stupid (and distant) acquaintance of his got busted by the cops for dealing and the guy used his one call to phone my mate and ask if my mate would confirm the guy was staying at his house (he wasn't). My mate promptly told him to fuck off and hung up straight away, but the damage was done, or so my mate thought. That phone call would have put the police right back on his tail, he reckoned. He started seeing all the old ghosts he did in the old days - he thought he was under surveillance and he'd tell me about people who walked past his house at different times of the day who he was sure were undercover cops, also he was being followed into shops by Ds, his phones were tapped, he even thought he was under surveillance by the police airborne unit! Apparently the chopper had once flown over his house and briefly spotlighted it (while he was on a stint on the mines - he wasn't even home! His sister told him about it). Shit. That's happened to me before once or twice. Doesn't mean anything.

Anyway, the guy's freaking out. Last week I sent him a perfectly innocent SMS and he thought it didn't sound like me, concluded that I'd been arrested (I am not a dealer or anything like that!) and that the cops were using my phone to get to him! So he warned all our other friends that I'd been arrested and everyone freaked out, got some really weird responses to SMSs I sent and people wouldn't answer my calls, which was really confusing...later on when it became clear I hadn't been arrested I received a lot of apologies, I can tell you!

Point is that there's no way the cops are after him. What he describes could only be a major operation that would cost 10s if not 100s of thousands of dollars to run. We're talking about a case which would have to be being worked by 10 people or so, and it's been running for several weeks. They would have had to get a warrant to tap his phone, and coordinate with the heli-cops. No frickin way. You'd think he was Pablo Escobar if you listen to what he reckons he's up against, but the coppers just aren't going to expend those kinds of resources without significant evidence that there's a possibility of a significant bust at some point. And he's not a dealer, I know it for a fact (doesn't really work with the FIFO schedule). If they did search his place, the most they'd find are tiny quantities of a couple of narcotics. And actually in his terror he flushed them, so they wouldn't even find them!

Basically, I want a solicitor to explain the above to him (and more) and explain very clearly why the cops WOULDN'T be after him considering the above and the fact he's gone straight and has been so for 10 years. One good long consult where all his questions can be answered, where it can be clearly explained why what he thinks what he's seeing ISN'T what he's seeing, what the cops can or can't do and how they operate etc. That should do the job, because his paranoia is getting out of control. Soon it won't be a lawyer he'll be needing, it'll be a shrink! If anyone knows a good solicitor who specialises in drugs and is willing to share, that would be much appreciated. Either post details in the thread or PM me. Thanks!

Thanks for posting but I really can't help. Sounds similar to a mate of mine that was and often still is very paranoid. When he says things like "The cops are still following me you know" I'll reply "How do you know, like see the same faces in cars or see the same car behind you sort of thing" and he'll reply "Nah I just know." That's paranoia 101. Unfortunately dealing with paranoia takes logic out of it so frequently I've said all the thing you've said to him that there is no sense in them to be following him when his been out of the game for 3 years and was never a big time dealer anyway there is no sense to have his phones tapped, be consistently followed and various other illogical things.

I hope you can find a lawyer who can sit down and straighten him out a bit and I respect you trying to get your mate the help he needs. Don't get your hopes too high up though, paranoid by it's definition is irrational fear, so even if a lawyer tells him the truth that he won't have people after him he may continue to be paranoid because he can't control it and it's irrational.

Best of luck, and I'd love you to update in a few months time whatever the result.

I think a clinical psychologist specialising in substance abuse would be more beneficial than a lawyer in this instance.

Why the hell do you wont a lawyer to talk to him when he is a small time user? As drancer said I think you should be trying to find him some kind of mental help, but if all else fails......

I wish you the best of luck OP, but unfortunately Bluelight isn't the place to search for legal representation. I'll be closing this, and will suggest looking around your area locally for some help.
