Through the rabbit hole!
Hello there, I am wondering if anybody knows of any good books that happen to be true about people with drugs and life's of people who abused them and such things and discovered things about them or something along those lines...

I have read books such as Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, The Heroin Diaries, Kingdom of Fear and Train Spotting....

So if anybody knows of any type of drug books or underworld shit let me know on here.

Also if you cold give a little bit of a blurb on here about the books that would be awesome but if not just tell me the name of the book and maybe the author and I will look it up on the net thanks, Peace!

Check out books by/about Dr. John C. Lilly if you are interested in the history of ketamine, and his musings on it. He was a pretty far out guy, taking ketamine ... pretty much always, and did a lot of stuff with isolation tanks.

If you want to see what happens when you do way too much mushrooms/DMT, look into some stuff by Terrence McKenna. You can probably find a lot of speeches/talks of his you can download. I think he was totally off his rocker, but he's kind of interesting to listen to at times. (Aldous Huxley is worth looking up as well if you are interested in people's thoughts on the psychedelic exp).

If you have not read PiHKAL & TiHKAL, I would highly suggest getting copies of those. They are books about phenethylamine and tryptamine psychedelics (and related things like entactogens) by Alexander Shulgin and his wife. They follow his introduction to psychedelics and career developing and exploring new compounds... truly a remarkable person.

These aren't fictional, if that is what you are looking for, but instead are about real people that played huge role in the world of psychedelic drugs and the culture that sprang up around them.

Albert Hoffman is an obvious character to look into, and if you have not read LSD: My Problem Child its worth checking out. Also LSD Psychotherapy by Dr. Stanislav Grof is a good book by someone very involved with early LSD use.

Jonathan Ott has written some interesting stuff on psychedelics as well.

Daniel Seibert has done a lot with Salvia divinorum, though I'm not sure if thats quite what you were looking for... but might be worth checking out (not really anything in particular, mostly papers).

Diary of a Drug Fiend

" Aleister Crowley's first published novel was "Diary of a Drug Fiend." The book was originally published in London in 1922. Although written over seventy-five years ago, the book is still relevant for today's readers. The book paints a vivid picture of the mind of drug users. The drug user's highs, lows, and sometimes strange thought patterns are described in great detail in this interesting book.

The infamous Aleister Crowley invokes a reaction with some people. Some say he was strange and went off the deep-end with his involvement in Magick, the practice of using various techniques to exert control over the forces of nature. If one is too close-minded to read this book because of the author's reputation, he or she would be missing a great read. "

I can't stand the dude personally, but Daniel Pinchbeck has written some books about DMT (ayahuasca in particular) and its use throughout time and his thoughts on the matter. Some people seem to dig it, I think he's a bit off out there in left field.

"Acid Dreams" by Martin A. Lee and Bruce Slain. It's a social history of LSD. It gets into the CIA's use of the drug for mind control purposes, and it also dissects it's explosion in the 60's and beyond.

"Cocaine" by Dominic Streatfeild. This book takes a look at the history of coke, from it's use by native South Americans hundreds of years ago, to the Pablo Escobar era.

Both are very informative and eye opening reads.

^ I checked out that cocaine book from the local library a while back, along with a book in a similar style about caffeine, and another about aspirin. It was a pretty good read. I like drug history books that follow the use of a drug through time, or its changing relationship with man over a long period.

The recreational drug users guide to safe recreational drug use ...but we know a good one isnt written (...yet?)

try these:

Buzzed, DMT: the spirit molecule, pihkal/tihkal, diary of a drug fiend, ecstacy: a complete guide, The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

and i just got the book "No Speed Limit" by frank owen...should be a good read

Rule of the bone is a good fiction read about marijuana, Rastafarians, Jamaica, and a troubled teen

im surprised no one said PERMANENT MIDNIGHT. its a true story about the writer from ALF who eventually becomes a huge dope fiend and crack head. VERY good read. there is also a movie. ben stiller is the main character and his wife is elizabeth hurley. the book is better though but movie is still cool to see ben stiller all junked out and smoking crack. very interesting especially cause its all true. wouldnt expect the writer from ALF to have a $6,000/week heroin/cocaine habit would ya?? so check it out, book and movie PERMANENT MIDNIGHT by Jerry Stahl.

do enough DMT and youd be out there too;)

Food of the Gods by Terence McKenna is a very good book. Shit makes a lot of sense.

Anything by Daniel Pinchbeck is a pretentious, piss-soaked rag.

Is heaven and hell even about drugs? I got doors of perception and it also contains heaven and hell, I havn't read that one yet.

Also, "the island" is one of my top 3 favorite books, it is also by huxley. drugs are not the main subject of the book, but they do take mushrooms. It's about the absolute ideal society, which gets corrupted by outsider's illness of greed. You should definitely check it out

A few drug related books from my personal library : Doors of perception- Huxley ,pihkal/tihkal- Shulgin, fear and loathing in las vegas- HST, Food of the gods - Mckenna ( as mentioned)

My favorite though is called "white rabbit: a psychedelic reader" It's a collection of tidbits from different Icons including Burroughs, HST , Mckenna, Tim Leary , Huxley ect

DMT: the spirit molecule is a damn good read. Quite technical at some points, but very interesting nonetheless.
