i thought we already had a thread on this subject - or a more general thread on the various investigations into trump's alleged criminal activity but i can't find either.

background: TIMELINE: Fulton County grand jury investigation into potential interference in Georgia elections

there was a very interesting development today - along with signs that charges may come in august - which prompted to me to start this thread:

Georgia Supreme Court denies Trump bid to quash Fulton County investigation

"The Georgia Supreme Court Monday declined to take up an effort from former President Donald Trump to quash an investigation into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.

The unanimous decision from the court’s nine justices was swiftly delivered just days after Trump’s legal team asked the court Friday to block an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D).
...
The court called out Trump’s efforts as procedurally dubious, dismissing his team’s legal argument at every turn.

“The Court has made clear that a petitioner cannot invoke this Court’s original jurisdiction as a way to circumvent the ordinary channels for obtaining the relief,” the justices wrote in the five-page opinion.

“Petitioner has not shown that this case presents one of those extremely rare circumstances in which this Court’s original jurisdiction should be invoked, and therefore, the petition is dismissed.”
"

it's a not-at-all surprising defeat for trump and his lawyers.

Ok Alas I can see you are very logical and have dusted off your glasses for clearer vision. It is my opinion that only persons with severe intellectual difficulties will disagree that Trump repeatedly engaged in behavior that is incompatible with his duty to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States of America; behavior that is by any objective standard criminal in nature. So apologies if that FACT offends.

I will sum this up. We have individual A (Trump) unable to accept that he lost a presidential election by about 10 million votes. (equal to a few small cities worth of people) So realizing he has prosecutors after him for blatant crimes that he bragged about the only way out of this legal hole is to become president and change federal and state laws to suit him and get him off the hook. Nowhere in there was a desire to help "american citizens". It was all self serving. grifting and totally criminal, However since individual A suffers from narcissistic tendencies he felt above the law and applied pressure to the secretary of state in Georgia. He wanted to fabricate about 11,000 votes so he could cheat and win in a state that usually votes red, but since individual A is a con man the state voted more blue this time. The blue side is in no way as devious as the right so people voted integrity over party this time in Georgia. (I know Georgia voting blue is really a message)

So going about trying to steal the election with no shame had no problem with his perfect phone call. Applied pressure because he thinks he can do anything and screw the american people and their votes. At that point he was totally ok with his vice president getting hung for not giving into pressure. (yeah Mike Pence Trump tried to kill you bro! Stop the denial)

I knew nothing of the fake electors until these recent arrests. I find it astounding. Just blatant cheating without shame. Totally brings the human race down a few notches and I resent that as I am part of that human race.

Imagine if this happened in sports. There is a reason we have a term called sportsmanship. We would never get to the next game if everyone acted like Trump.

So Georgia, totally within their rights decided to investigate and possibly prosecute.

We can probably close the thread now. :) Not much to discuss so I see why the thread is dead.

yep yep.

it's going to be interesting to see how far up the chain the fake elector scheme charges go. it seems reasonably clear. at this stage, that it was a coordinated effort and that rudy giuliani appears to have been complicit.

there's very little pushback from the gop, the right generally and the right-leaners on bl.

i think that's a sign that it's just pretty indefensible...

^ Yes people accuse others of things they would do. I learned that after being accused of something crazy that would never even cross my mind. Yet I found out later the accuser did just the thing he accused others of.

I do think Trump and team worked some stuff to try and win. But what happened is they were not prepared for the droves of democrats that came out and undid any numbers game the republicans had. Also a lot of younger people, while not able to verbalize it, just really see right through Trump. Georgia is a good example. And now even more younger people are voting.

yesterday: Giuliani ‘does not contest’ he made false statements about Fulton election workers

"Rudy Giuliani is not contesting accusations that he made false statements about two former Fulton County election workers as he seeks to fend off a defamation lawsuit they brought against him, according to a court filing late Tuesday.

As an attorney for former President Donald Trump, Giuliani has repeatedly accused election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss of voting fraud. State and federal investigators quickly determined the allegations were false and said so.

Freeman and Moss endured harassment and death threats because of the allegations and, in December 2021, filed a defamation lawsuit against Giuliani. In a document filed Tuesday, Giuliani said he is not contesting he made false statements about Freeman and Moss.
"

giuliani said some absolutely despicable things about these election workers who ended up having to move house due to the awful threats they received.

not good for giuliani and potentially troublesome for trump.

Giuliani: "Actually, I lied. Biden won."
Trump: "Actually, I lied. Biden won."
Electors: "Actually, I lied. Biden won."
Fox News: "Actually, we lied. Biden won."
Pence: "Trump was mistaken, I did not have that power."
Every single judge appointed by Trump himself: "Biden won, no evidence of cheating"
Every other GOP member: "Trump is retarded."

Every single MAGA person, for some reason, to this day: "Biden cheated!!!!!!! Conspiracy!!!! Trump won his 2nd term!!!!!"

It's insane how stupid some people in this day of age.

Trump, 18 allies indicted in Georgia over 2020 election meddling, the 4th criminal case against him

"ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump and 18 allies were indicted in Georgia on Monday with scheming to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state, with prosecutors turning to a statute normally associated with mobsters to accuse the former president, lawyers and other top aides in a sweeping criminal conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power.

The 97-page indictment details dozens of acts by Trump and his allies to undo his defeat in the battleground state, including hectoring Georgia’s Republican secretary of state to find enough votes to keep him power, pestering officials with bogus claims of voter fraud and attempting to persuade Georgia lawmakers to ignore the will of voters and appoint a new slate of electoral college electors favorable to Trump. It also outlines a scheme to tampering with voting machines in one Georgia county and steal data.

“Trump and the other Defendants charged in this Indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump,” says the indictment issued Monday night by the office of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

file under "trump probably regretting not shutting the fuck up":

Trump melts down on Truth Social after his tweets come back to haunt him in Fulton indictment

"Former President Donald Trump and a slew of alleged co-conspirators were indicted late Monday night on racketeering charges, marking a new chapter in Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis' election conspiracy investigation.
...
Included in the 161 violations of Georgia's RICO Act — legislation used to target gangs, mafia, and organized groups more broadly — by Trump and his associates were 12 tweets from the former president's personal Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump. Though Trump may have not composed each post himself, Willis's indictment observes that all of the 12 tweets were "caused to be tweeted" by Trump,
as Insider notes."

The best part? We will apparently finally get The Mugshot that we have all been waiting for.
The second best part? These are state charges, and cannot be pardoned by the President. "The state-level charges, formally unveiled late on Monday, also cannot be pardoned by Georgia's governor under the state's constitution. Instead, the southern US state has an independent board that issues pardons, but such requests can only be made five years after a sentence is served."
So he will spend a guaranteed, minimum 5 years in the slammer, regardless.[ref]
Third best part? With 18 defendants we are going to have a right old pot-of-crabs situation where as soon as one person flips, it's going to be a house of cards, and they are all going to rush to fuck each other over and save their own skins, because that's the kind of slimy fucks they are. Also, this is the correct way to take down an organization like the mob: you don't take down just the guy at the top because he will be replaced by a new fall guy. If Trump alone goes down and all his slimy cohort, including Rudy "Your tits belong to me" Giuliani, Marjorie Taylor Greene (ruining the acronym MTG forever) remain, we really haven't done a lot.

There is no escape for Drumpf. Trapped like a sewer rat, as they say.

"Mr. Owl, how many indictments does it take until Trump gets arrested?"
"One, two, three, four. Four indictments!"

some doofus on Sean Hannity's radio show said there was some way he might be able to pardon himself. I was listening to it in my car while I ate my Zaxby's so I kinda zoned out while he was talking.

he is, of course, innocent until proven guilty but, if found guilty, there's no mechanism for him to pardon himself - or any of his co-conspirators - in the georgia case.

with so many indicted in the conspiracy, it's hard to imagine that a few of them won't flip to save themselves...

there probably are people who think he deserves it for his treasonous actions and the disgraceful way he and his his co-conspirators destroyed the lives of the georgia election workers.

here it is, Mark Levin

President Trump can, in fact, pardon himself from the GA charges if he is elected president.

1. The Constitution's silent about whether a president can be indicted.
2. The DOJ has taken the position under both parties that you cannot indict a sitting president because it would cripple the executive branch and make his ability to defend himself effectively impossible.
3. Given the DOJ's position, and the Supremacy Clause in the Constitution, I would argue strongly that the idea that a president cannot be indicted at the federal level because it would cripple the executive branch, but can be indicted by local DAs, would have exactly the same effect as a federal indictment, except there are thousands of local and state prosecutors making the crippling of a president even more likely.
4. FURTHERMORE, if indicted and even convicted, the idea that a president cannot pardon himself from state charges is absurd, again, not only because of the Supremacy Clause, but the same considerations that apply to a federal conviction would obviously apply to a state conviction.

Therefore, I disagree with Jonathan Turley's view and others who keep repeating it.
