George Jung -- the prolific cocaine smuggler portrayed by Johnny Depp in the movie “Blow” -- has been released from prison after serving almost 20 years behind bars -- and TMZ has a pic of his first moments of freedom.

Jung (now 71-years-old) was doing time at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey and was supposed to be released in November ... but for some reason the ex-drug smuggler got out early.

thats pretty cool. I wonder if he got any money from the movie

I just watched Blow for the first time in a while last weekend--it was my girl's first time--fucking great, one of the movies that introduced me to drug culture. I always loved the history in it, like when he shows up to the Panamanian bank and his money has been nationalized...

Lol this guy used to have a bottle with a straw in it filled with cocaine in his shirt pocket to be spun constantly.

My fav part is when he goes to pick up the 50 kilos of dope for Diego and the guy is like who the fuck are you? I'm George, friend of Diego... Ohhh your George....open your mouth. Get fucked. Puts the gun in his mouth and warns him and asks if he can get the msg to Diego and with the gun in his mouth he goes I think so. Lol

Also when he's walking in the airport with black Betty playing and he's got that all white outfit with black aviators on, bad ass.

Good to see he's out.

Yeah I saw on TV a couple nights ago that Boston George got out. I guess he's going to some sort of transitional living facility.

Yeah in the movie the guy he met is called Diego but in real life wasn't the guy "Crazy" Carlos Lehder who bought the Bahamian island and turned it into a one stop airstrip for cargo planes flying in massive amounts of cocaine. He would have like a dozen Cessnas all take off at once to overwhelm the DEA. They knew about it for a long time but there was nothing they could do because he was bribing the Bahamian government. The national news got a hold of some footage of the strip and fly over pics. I remember the phrase " It looks like O'hare National airport at midday."

They used to move other drugs besides cocaine on Normans Cay (the island Lehder bought). I know weed and Quaaludes were big shipments as well.

The stories that I've read about the island are fucked up. It was basically a lot of rich drug dealers running around an island with guns and tons of drugs. They scared away and chased off most of the locals that were there beforehand.

George Jung would be very disappointed with the quality of most cocaine. Definitely wouldn't be like he remembered it. And Blow is partially fictionalized but oddly enough the more bizarre elements of the story are supposedly true. Like they did go down to Mexico, not knowing anyone, not knowing Spanish, just looking for weight with weed. They also stole the first airplane they moved shit with, just like in the movie. The Normans Cay stuff is true. I think the biggest fictionalized piece in the movie was the relationship with George and his father, which wasn't as great as they made it out to be in the movie.

If any of this seems interesting to anyone I highly recommend the book Cocaine by Dominic Streatfeild. It has a much more detailed history and economic importance than I would have imagined before reading it.

I love the movie blow. It would make you think doing coke and being a coke dealer was glamorous if you didn't know any better. Still id love to have even a quarter of the money he made off the shit. It was total bullshit getting that kinda time for some fucking powder! He was just supplying a substance that people wanted. Fucking paedophiles don't do nearly as much time as he did ffs

I really hope the guy can make a life for himself on the outside. I have known alot of long timers that have a hard time getting along after being locked up for a long time never mind 20 fucking some odd years. He should be able to cash in on his fame abit i mean not every guy has Johnny Depp play them in a movie.

This is awesome I thought he would die in there. I wonder if his daughter ever forgave him or talked to him again poor guy it was such a tragic story I don't cry but I cried at the end of that movie when he held his daughter telling her she's his everything that she's the only thing that ever meant anything to him, that she's the only good pure thing in his life of sin.
That guy must be real old by now I wonder if he even knows how to handle himself out of prison. I hope his daughter forgive him I mean she can tell he loves her its not like he made a decision I don't want to see my kid anymore or anything like that.

The movie blow is awesome I still have the VHS of it and its about time I watch it again. Its MY moms fav movie too if you ask her what her favorite movie is she will say blow haha

I also find that movie to be one of the best drug flicks ever made.

Right up there with Trainspotting, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Requiem for a Dream, Traffic, The Basketball Diaries, No Country for Old Men, and most definitely the '83 iteration of Scarface. I know at least a couple of the aforementioned titles are considered gangster flicks more than anything, but whatever.

What I wanted to write about however was that, whenever I'm reminded of Blow, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth (no pun intended) due to the fact that the director of the film tragically ended up dying from a heart attack after snorting some cocaine, IIRC.

Yep... Apparently he was casually playing some basketball with a couple of friends, and at one point he simply collapsed. Afterwards, it was noted that cocaine was found in his system by the pathologist who performed the autopsy.

Very very sad :(

Not a good idea to be playing sports when using cocaine, as the strain on the heart can be too much :(

I remember listening to the end-part of this movie playing in the other room the first time I did LSD. Pretty damned emotional ending, really felt for him losing his daughter. Made me think of my own life and how I never want to be in such a position. I had seen it prior to this, and have watched it again after, but it never pulled my emotional heartstrings the way it did by just listening to it on LSD.

I think his daughter did go visit him after the movie came out so that's something atleast. Considering he was trying to make child support payments by making money the only way he knew how he should be cut some slack for that. Not every guy would go out and risk that just to see their kid that's for sure.

Yea man I know he was a better man than my father could ever be. Mine lived a 10 minute ride from me and had joint custody of me and my sister but chose not to even see us for 12 years then he died back in january never knowing who I was or what I looked like he was at the gym working out next to me a couple tines in the past and never even acted like I existed I wonder if he knew he was working out next to his son. He went out of his way to make sure my mom would have no money to feed us with and refused to buy anything for the family he was loaded too had an airplane a house in the states and millions in cash while me and my mom were practicly homeless all the time suffering until I was able to start working and bringing in money my mom did the best she could but was sick all the time and was all fucked up from shit my dad did to her . my dad was a fucker I wish I had George as a dad haha
My mom even said that at the end if the movie something like he's still a better dad than yours lol

Trainspotting was amazing, but painful to watch at times due to seeing Ewan McGregor's character acting dope sick.

Even though he was acting, it was still convincing enough that it physically made my body ache, but in the end, I felt it made the film even better.

The Basketball Diaries also has Leonardo DiCaprio's character act dope sick, but it's got a more serious, and helpless undertone, which made watching it particularly difficult. At the same time however, I found myself impressed (and a little disturbed) with DiCaprio's ability to act dope sick, which made the film memorable.

Therefore, if you found Trainspotting to be difficult to watch at times due to the portrayal of acute opiate withdrawal, it is my experience that you should probably brace yourself if you plan to watch The Basketball Diaries, because it may be a difficult journey down memory lane for some of us. And if you've been clean for a short time, it can certainly trigger some intense cravings.

Requiem for a Dream just like Spun is difficult for me to discuss, as I found both quite trippy, but still quite good.

George Jung suffered a heart attack while watching his daughter's birth. Luckily for him, he was in the hospital. Huge amounts of cocaine in his system at the time of the incident was most likely a factor.

"I once snorted 10 grams. I dunno, I guess I have a high tolerance." - Johnny Depp as George Jung

Damn man, that's rough. I've got a lot of issues with my real dad (I say that to differentiate from my stepdad), but I did have some fun memories with him. That must have been weird seeing him in the gym and not getting acknowledged. :( I'm sorry man, I do feel for you.

I found HS to be particularly hard not having a father figure that I was close to. My friends would usually have some kind of story about something cool their dad did or something they did together.

At this point in time I could easily pick up the phone and try to reconnect with that side of my family, but it's hard. Our almost non-existent relationship isn't just his fault. I haven't seen my dad for 6 years now and have only seen him 3 times in the last 10 years. I used to be real upset about it thinking he loved my half brother and half sisters, but just didn't care about me. I'm pretty sure that's not true, but it hurts to think it might be. I'm some residual mistake from his previous marriage and a different sort of life. My dad left because he was all fucked up on drugs and he cleaned himself up and moved on in life. I just wasn't really there for it. :\

***end rant and thread derailment***

I just watched Blow again last night after seeing this thread. Always cool. Always makes me wonder what happened to Tuna. Anyways apparently George Jung penned a book while in prison further detailing his years of smuggling. There's talks of it being turned into a movie. The book called Heavy is set to come out next month.
