My dog gets them sometimes, but he is stubborn and refuses to let you pull them off. It's super annoying, so we have to wipe this tick ointment on his neck. Even that you have to do quick or else he smells it and starts going into defensive mode. After we pull them off him or if we find them crawling around we put the ticks on a piece of scotch tape and then fold it over so they're trapped in the tape. I don't know if it kills them (I mean eventually it would), but they can't get out and can't move at all.
From there you can toss them, flush 'em, or burn 'em. They're creepy things. It's crazy how strong they are too. I tried smashing them on pavement and they just keep crawling.
