French Foreign Legion

I don't advocate joining any military force; but if I were going to join any, it would definitely NOT be the French Foreign Legion.

If back-breaking military grunt work is what you desire, have you considered enlisting in the USMC as 0300 (infantry)? IMO it would be much less shady, more benefits, pay isn't as good but the people are higher quality. That's a big deal, man; if you're gunna be fighting, you want to be in the shit with the highest-quality people around. Additionally, the M16A2 is a superior service weapon to those used by any other military. If I were to go into battle, I would want Marines to have my back and my trusty M16 in my hand. That's just my opinion, though.

there you go... this stereotypical kind of comment shows just how much people follow the well worn path of mythical ideas on the legion. "higher quality" ? youll have to explain that one for me...

as for the m16... ill have my famas anyday. or a hk416.

Man, La Légion Étrangère is no joke. The only good thing you have in combat lands is the food you can trade for other valuables with the other forces.

I did some extensive research starting about 6 months ago. I was at a rough spot in my life, trying to decide my next step. I have a college degree that I believed was useless-- I was looking for adventure. I decided I was going to try to join, bought a one-way ticket for Marseilles... Two weeks before my departure, a friend of mine called me up and offered me a much better alternative. I was fully prepared to go, and I am still considering it after I graduate with my masters a year from now.

The main upsides to me, other than the reasonably decent pay, are the challenges you'll face, and the fact that you are eligible for EU citizenship. As a disillusioned American, a gateway to the rest of the world is a tempting offer--even if it comes at the cost of potential death:

I HAVE a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air—
I have a rendezvous with Death 5
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath—
It may be I shall pass him still. 10
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope of battered hill,
When Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows 'twere better to be deep 15
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear...
But I've a rendezvous with Death 20
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous

i have no regrets, but... its fair to say, if i REALLY knew what it was going to be like before i went, there would be a very good chance i wouldnt have gone.

it really is THAT tough.

Hi there, forgive me for not making my own post but i couldnt work out how, maybe i have to be a trusted member before starting a thread. Anyways, i have dithered over the foreign legion since turning, it was always my childhood dream because of the romanticised mirage created by films. Anyway rather than embark on an essay justifying my motives for joining, beleive me that i have thought long and hard about it (if i am to go the military root i nwould want to go all the way and join the legion, what i deem the ultimate, as i would far rather the satisfaction of the Képi Blanc than the oppertunity to be a high ranking officer in my own countries military). My long burning question- i know its joked about alot- but there is actualy no credible answer on the faithful google search engine lol, which is what does a legionaire do for sex? Let alone not being aloud leave for the first two years? does that include not even going out drinking at the local bars? must you drink only amongst legionnaires at the barracks? And as you have to live in the barracks for the first two years i guess your almost definitely not aloud to invite back a girl to the barracks if you were aloud to local bars. Im not joking lol this is almost the only dominating factor preventing me from joining as i would want to be a legionnaire not a legionnaire and a celibate monk. Does anyone have an answer which doesnt involve the camel joke lol.

^Hey welcome to Bluelight.

I've thought about joining the legion myself also because of the image of adventure and everything. I've done some research on it and they do give you leave and if you have the proper paper work filled out and some other stuff you can even depart France for your leave as long as you return to your unit after your leave is over.

Even soldiers get free time every once in awhile.

I'd seen a French documentary about the ffl around '95 they got two prostitutes and a queue of about 100 blokes lining up no joke...

I've served with members of the FFL on multi-national operations. IT IS NOT something you do for the lulz, because your bored, or anything like that. It seems to surpass the lifestyle changes required by even 'regular' militaries, such as my own Canadian Forces, U.S.A., U.K. hell, even Russian troops seem to have it 'easier'

P.M. if you want details.

Hi there, thanks for the response, i read that too, but.............. is that not only after 2 years, ie when you leave the barracks and are expected to rent/ buy your own house/ flat anyway. I thought the first two years ws suspose to be the most gruelling where you are kind of proving your allegiance to the legion which equates to not being able to leave the barracks that night, obviously you can drink in that period but within the barracks- inadvertedly (at least the way i see it) that means no sex lol. For me, thats far worse a discipline than any gruelling exercises they chuck at you. I was ready over two years ago now to join, and that real has been making me prospone my one way ticket to france- lol notg even joking i am seriously considering marrying some one for the sake of the legion as i know they are considerate of familys (and i think dont quote me on this one that you get put in special housing for your family after the initial training). I am so ready, maybe at 18 it was too early, i have enjoyed youth to the full since but i feel now is the time if i am to persue legion- i might turn into a hard core military wanker in the next 5 years but i dont want to be a 5 year wanker in the literal sense (well even two year- just too long). Also hows your french??
