I've always been a user of mild stimulants (coffee, ginseng, red bull, etc.), and have recently come across Five Hour Energy. I'm not entirely clear how it works (the main effect comes from enormous doses of B-Vitamins, with a little bit of caffeine/taurine so that it kicks in more quickly), but I think it's probably my favorite stimulant in terms of both productivity and going out drinking. I get a very even, up-beat energy boost that tapers off rather than leaving me with a crash. Heightened mental acuity, higher tolerance for endurance exercise, all the good stuff.

Anyways, anybody else have experience with/knowledge about five hour energy? Pros/Cons? Safety risks I'm over-looking? Insights into how it makes me feel so awesome?

^ do you have any experience with more hardcore stims? (I.E. illegal ones: coke, meth, etc.)

I've heard that they work really well, but I don't have any experience myself, but I've thought about trying them. this sounds like a pretty good testament for their effectiveness.

five hour energy is essentially about a cup of coffee's worth of caffeine (~100 mg) + the usual cocktail of amino acids and vitamins (mostly B) + a fairly unique placebo effect.

But hey, if it works, it works.

ebola

i've tried all the stims except crack and several RC's (MDPV, etc.) -- in terms of sustaining a high level of focus, five hour energy is just as effective over 3-6 hours as a moderate dose of amphetamine. and it provides euphoria without any anxiety/teeth-grinding. not on the level of cocaine, but far more sustained and pleasant.

don't call it placebo til you've tried it. i was of the same mind as well (what can a legal supplement really do above and beyond the usual mix of caffeine/taurine/ginseng?), but i can say with a high level of certainty that there's a lot more there than a cup of coffee and the power of suggestion going on.

I used some today, I used to get the energy drinks but always had a crash with those (red bull being the absolute worst crash) but the 5 hour energy for me has no crash, with the same stimulation as the drinks. Good stuff.

I used the black ones every morning I had to get up very early to work and it worked good. I did never crash but food is also important plus the vitamins it has works pretty well together.

seems like there is fairly unanimous praise for this stuff. I drank half a bottle on an empty stomach after getting 2 hours of alcohol interrupted sleep and going to a physically intensive job: catering a wedding. My hands weren't shaking the dishes around like I was on coke, and I felt generally euphoric.

I never really thought about drinking it before going out drinking. I'm wondering whether it would be good to drink it if you ere going to anything other than a dance club or a rave though?

Something in it gives me splitting headaches. Normal energy drinks dont do it. just 5 hour. Anyone else get this?

i actually really like it for just a big night out at bars/parties. i usually take 1/3 - 1/2 early on in the evening, and it really helps me (especially as someone who smokes a lot of pot) stay energetic and interested way longer than normal.

tried this yesterday.

got a 2pack.
the first one worked really well for me, I used it as a substitute for my morning coffee, and was focused on my work.

I have a bad cardiovascular system and a history of panic attacks.
Shouldn't have drank the 2nd one yesterday early evening. Was doing some teaching (intense for me:\) and BP started to elevate significantly to the point of panic attack and weakness. Not a pleasant evening, and couldn't help my friend with all the math.

interesting substance. i see Citicoline on the ingredients list...

may try again sometime in 1/4 the dosage. Today feeling spent, but took a fair amount of BP meds to control the bloodpressure last night, and normally feel fatigued...

I noticed a headache as well during the comedown of the first dose.

nice... maybe I'll drink like 1/4 of one before our next party and see what's up.

don't call it placebo til you've tried it.

1. How would a personal bioassay help me differentiate placebo effects from phamacological activity?
2. What makes you think that I haven't tried 5 hr. energy?
3. Everything that you ingest with the intent of entry to an altered state, active or not, exerts placebo effects.
4. I didn't mean to insinuate that placebo effects are somehow false. Placebo effects are quite real insofar as you experience them.

ebola

you insinuated (or so it seemed) that any significant difference in effect between FHE and an equivalent amount of caffeine and "the usual cocktail of amino acids and vitamins" was due to placebo. i'm not quite sure what you mean by "the usual" there, as there is a huge difference in the b-vitamin profiles of FHE and other energy drinks. that you were so quick to write it off made me think it was something you hadn't tried and weren't very interested in dignifying with more than a standard "it's placebo" response. it's a message board, not a peer-reviewed journal, so i'm sorry if the lack of scientific rigor in my reaction offended you.

do you know of any research on whether or not that high a level of b-vitamins could be pharmacologically active? i understand the placebo effect well enough to know its power, but i had very low expectations of this substance and it ended up really impressing me.

Hey seem to work good with me . I only use them once in a while though . So I don't build a tolerance to them .
But with no tolerance the energy shots are good.

However I prefer monster energy shots as they have less b vitamins , with more caffiene , taurine, ginseg and some other stuff which gets me really niceley focused and wired .

B vitamins? Not likely, although they are heavily involved in energy transformation. Caffeine in combination with the other compounds(possibly causing a synergistic effect) and a placebo effect? Yes.
Agreed 100% with ebola.

And the "usual" cocktail of amino acids/b vitamins he is referring to is taurine/tyrosine/phenylalanine + niacin/folic acid/pyridoxine(B6)/cyanocobalamin(B12), which is quite common in energy drinks.

Heh...I'm sorry if I seemed offended or dismissive; I didn't mean to appear so.

There's nothing I've seen indicating that ultra-high doses of B-vitamins should be more effective than very high doses, so, in lieu of any other mechanism, I believe 5-hour energy's unique effects are best explained by placebo. However, this all is pretty speculative, and I'm happy to be shown to be mistaken.

diet well
exercise at the same time every day (recommended first thing in the morning)
sleep at the same time every day

you will have insurmountable energy if you practice these simple disciplines

bump because Im surprised no one who posted in this thread mentioned L-tyrosine. Its a potent amino probably the main ingredient that sets 5 Hour apart from Monster/Bull/Rockstar.
