My favorites are VII and X (yeah I know, haha).
I just got through playing the story on FFXIII and have started on post-game.
I think a fair amount of serious fans would be pretty disappointed with the overall lack of control and linear style of the game. I definitely see it as more of an action/tactics/rpg hybrid, and it does seem to be completely lacking the sheer depth many FF games are known for.
However, its still an excellent game and those complaints are only made due to expectations instigated by the FF namesake. The production value in this game is simply remarkable and possibly the best of any game I have played. The graphics are very good but the creative drive on this game is where it really shines. Superb attention to detail with diverse and impressive environment, character and monster design. The story is quite interesting and there is lots of quality voice acting and FMV. Soundtrack is great. The first 15 or 20 hours of gameplay are not as interesting as they could be due to character development and side missions being absent, but after that I actually began to enjoy the gameplay, in spite of its simplicity.
