Final Fantasy

My favorites are VII and X (yeah I know, haha).

I just got through playing the story on FFXIII and have started on post-game.

I think a fair amount of serious fans would be pretty disappointed with the overall lack of control and linear style of the game. I definitely see it as more of an action/tactics/rpg hybrid, and it does seem to be completely lacking the sheer depth many FF games are known for.

However, its still an excellent game and those complaints are only made due to expectations instigated by the FF namesake. The production value in this game is simply remarkable and possibly the best of any game I have played. The graphics are very good but the creative drive on this game is where it really shines. Superb attention to detail with diverse and impressive environment, character and monster design. The story is quite interesting and there is lots of quality voice acting and FMV. Soundtrack is great. The first 15 or 20 hours of gameplay are not as interesting as they could be due to character development and side missions being absent, but after that I actually began to enjoy the gameplay, in spite of its simplicity.

Here's a mother fucker for you....

My ex-BF has a PS3. I bought FF13 and the guide book to play it. Played it to the final boss. Had 60+ hours logged in the game to get there. He kicks me out before I see the final boss. Fucking SUCKS

Massive Final Fantasy fan and I'm about 40 hours into Final Fantasy XIII. It's pretty good but nowhere near on par with any of the others! I agree with Vash31 that it doesn't live up to the Final Fantasy name but as a standalone game it's pretty decent! Hope (the character) annoys the shit out of me though!

The review I saw of it made it look terrible. They were fighting one boss for over 20 minutes and dealing insane damage and it just looked like a giant cinematic with numbers all over the place. I was not impressed at all.

I'm halfway through FF6 at the moment.. Kefka just destroyed the world :(

This has been a very relaxing summer lol...

i'll admit, 12 is really good, but 4 and 6 are the two best. another great one isnt technically an ff game, but saga 2 (ff legend 2 in the states) is such a great game. i will be pissed if the ds remake isnt brought stateside, but its getting a fan translation so i'll just have to play it that way.

shin megami tensei is where its at these days anyway.

FF7 is still my favorite game of all time. I literally did every thing you could do with that game. I maxed out the time clock by a good 20 hours. It was just the greatest game ever. FF8 was legit too, played that one alot as well. 9 was cool, but not on the same level.

Anyone else play Xenogears? It was a little more obscure than the FF series, not many people I know have played it. The graphics weren't that great, and the fighting system was kinda boring, but it was probably the most epic story I've ever seen in a game. It blew me away.

xenogears, like chrono trigger, is one of the best games square ever released.

xenosaga is in essense the same storyline as xenogears, just set like 10,000 years prior (fei's gear, the Weltall, is the Omega ID; there's other loose connections too, but they had to stay loose, for copyright/intellectual property/bs reasons).

^ Seeing that Xenosaga is 90% cutscenes, I don't think you've missed much by not playing :D.

Just kidding. Sorta.

I have the Trilogy. I played through most of the first but got stuck near the end because the leveling system is a bit screwy. I absolutely ADORE the game and give props to the authors of the story, truly one of the best in the gaming world.

I hope sometime soon I can restart the first and try to level up more efficiently.

Xenogears and Chrono Trigger are my favorite rpgs. I also love the Lunar series for the psone. You guys are bringing back some memories since back in the day if it looked good and was an rpg i'd play it. I loved all the snes rpgs like breath of fire etc. One of my favorite final fantasy moments is in 7 when you see the memory after you go in Vincents coffin?. Its more of a tactics game that I randomly played but anyone ever play Vanguard Bandits?

vanguard bandits was pretty good. Working Designs put out a lot of great games (lunar, alundra, growlanswer generations, arc the lad, etc), its a shame they went under. they were one of my favorite publishers.

NIS (nippon ichi software) puts out a lot of great games; disgaea is one of the best strategy rpgs ever made, and makai kingdom and phantom brave are pretty good too (the story is a bit lacking in phantom brave, but the game engine and style more than make up for it); they publish some traditional, very japanese rpgs too, such as the Atelier Iris series and the Ar tonelico series, and quite a few others (ClaDun looks like it'll be a nice throwback to the days when rpgs were carried by their story instead of graphics, and will probably be lots of fun; same for Z.H.P.: Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman; their goofy games are so awesome and addicting).

The first time I played VII .... I was instantly hooked.
I'd never played anything like it :)

It's weird this thread is around actually because, for nostalgia's sake, I started played VIII again and I'm right into it ^_^

My mate got XIII a while ago and I was fucking well scared to play it at first! =D
But when I started to get into it I thought it was rather grand :) Then his PS3 got the "Dreaded Amber Light of Doom" and broke lol...
Hope he gets it fixed so I can play it when I'm round at his and can't sleep hehe =D

Wuv yoo FF!!! (even though, as the OP said, you've wasted thousands of hours of my life.. But I'm easily doing that on my own anyway) ;)

p.s. Vagrant Story was the dog's bollocks too! :)

Nice, I couldn't even remember the rest of the games Arc the Lad etc. Pretty cool someone else ever played those because they were among the greatest story line rpgs i'd played. They also put a shitload into the game and the actual gamebox.

tathra-

I would have to say that Fire Emblem beats out disgaea in terms of challenge, and writing. I have yet to play any other rpg that even comes close to fire emblem's standards. When a character dies in the game, that's it. You can never get that character back. And if it's one of the main characters that dies, it's game over. Further, there are some battles where you are outnumbered 3:1 and the opponent is just as powerful as you are. You have to use the terrain to your advantage.

Final fantasy on the other hand is incredibly overrated. Don't get me wrong, most FF's are solid rpgs. But, that dissipated after IX. Unfortunately, SqureEnix decided to put most of their FF budget into CG cut-scenes instead of into writing, and game-play. The characters are always too stylized and it seems that the writers assume most of the fan base is composed of 14 year old girls. I would suggest that if you are just as disappointed in the way FF has gone astray as I am, try out the Tales series if you have yet to. At least the battle system remains interesting (instead of devolving into "press X repeatedly").

fixed.

Tales is indeed a good rpg series. and the fire emblem games are alright, but they jsut dont really do it for me. Final Fantasy Tactics (for ps1) was a much more solid tactical rpg than any of the fire emblem games i've played.

(also, part of disgaea's charm is how its goofy and doesnt take itself seriously. it gets extra points in my book for being nerdy and making me lol. its also one of the first games that i put more than 100 hours into, something like 180 hours iirc, something which even today very few games are able to)

I agree that FFVII & FFVIII were the beginning of the end (which ultimately was FFX). However, FFIX is imo, a proper FF. Yes, it had furries in it... but still, it could be worse.

Yes, I'm a nerd. :|

Loved the FF games I played. I never bough another console after the playstation so I missed out on the newer ones. Just can't brimg myself to buy a console for 1 game.

I'm not the die hard FF fan I used to be but I still love them.
10 and Tactics were always my favorites, god I've put hundreds of hours into just those two.
I've played 1,2,3,7,9,10,12, and tactics
Only own 3, 9, 12, and tactics though; too poor haha
