movies are art. art is entirely a matter of opinion.

it's entirely possible for somebody to see similarities that you don't and for that person to give those similarities greater weight than you, perhaps would.

please don't belittle the opinion of others to the detriment of your substantial contribution to this forum. thanks.

Not all art is open for interpretation. Especially not such broad and imaginative interpretation. There are basic facts and truths in any movie, even the most symbolic. Sure, they may not always be obvious, but for the purposes of THIS PARTICULAR discussion, it is AMAZINGLY EVIDENT to anyone with even a basic attention span that Pi and A Beautiful Mind are not even close to the same. If someone sees ANY similarities that I don't AND gives them any weight at all, then maybe that person should stick with movies that require a little less thought, like "Dude Where's My Car". Now THAT is some art that is just RIPE for interpretation.

Adios,

says who? doesn't this go to the very core of the definition of "art"?

art is, to me, whatever i say it is. if i choose to interpret it, it's automatically open to (my) interpretation. you may not feel something is art. if i feel it's art, it's art.

anyway, i'm drifting this off topic. perhaps we need a "what is art?" topic in T&A :)

pi's cool.. don't worry about the math.. it's more a portrait of obsession than anything (a continuing theme in darren aronofsky's films).. but the soundtrack rocks :)

From the time the camera followed that printout to the trash can, the whole movie was obvious. All people pointed to that number(of course). And with the watching the sun and the mentor's burnout and the allusions to Greek Lit(fly too close to sun, melt wings...the fish was named Icarus) it was obvious what the plot would be.

Great concept, very weak and predictable execution. Worth a watch for its premise alone, though. Or if you are a math nerd type guy.

EDIT-Also worth a watch for the absoluitely perfectly matched music to set the atmosphere AND the hot ass neighbor.

It seems to owe a lot to a short story called Pi Man by Alfred Bester. If you don't know this guy, get some of his stuff and read it... the short stories are wonderful, and he preempted cyberpunk by about 30 years with 'The Stars my Destination/Tiger Tiger'.

I am resurrecting this thread to see if anyone has anything new to say about the movie.

Pi is still one of my top ten favorite movies. Easily one of the best independent movies ever made. It's right up there with the works of Jarmusch and Lynch.

It's always interesting to hear how people interpret this film. Granted, I didn't understand it until about the fifth viewing, but once I got the concept it blew me the fuck away.

So... anyone have any ideas about WTF was up with Pi?
