As some of you may already know, this is a movie about Frank Lucas. He was a heroin kingpin in New York during the 60's and 70's. He was notorious for going around the Italian mob, which was controlling the heroin supply, and establishing a direct connect in SEA. He's also said to be the first person to "brand" heroin. His first and most famous brand was called "Blue Magic."

The film stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, and is directed by Ridley Scott. It is going to be released Nov. 2, 2007.

The film is partly inspired, and based, on a NY Mag article on Frank Lucas. The article was published in the early 2000's I believe. It's a good article and I really recommend it to anyone that's interested in heroin or the movie. Here's the link to the article: The Return of Superfly.

Jay-Z's next album was inspired by the movie, it is also called American Gangster. It should be released shortly after the film, on Nov. 6, 2007.

Here is a link to the official movie website. It has a trailer, photos, and info about the movie.

i hoped this would be my new favorite movie about a drug empire, it had the potential to be, being based on a true story, 70's swag, and takes place in harlem.

i did enjoy it, but IMO it came off as average. denzel was good n' i wish they focused more on him building his empire/operation and less on russell crowe. also i could've done without common and T.I having small roles, but RZA was cool as a cop rockin that 70 gear, LOL.

It's not out yet. How did you see it, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the heads up! ;)

I just saw it, it was good. I'm glad they didn't spend a lot of time trying to portray heroin addiction, as it almost always gets misconstrued in the media.

As for the screen time mentioned above, Denzel(Lucas) was given more time than Crowe. And I don't think Crowe was given too much time, I mean, they had to flesh out his character somewhat. Crowe's character(Ritchie) is a central part in Lucas' story...

Just saw this yesterday, i think i was slightly let down as id built it up heaps before seeing it, not say its not a good movie though.
Havent really given it much thought yet, but im certain someone else couldve played Lucas with some more authenticity than Denzel, his stye is scripted this kind of role, IMO. He was good as stand up hard cunt in Man on Fire, but this is altogether different, he certainly had balls but i just didnt like him in thisrole for some reason.
Another thing, the movie was carrying along nicely until he was caught and his operation was shut down, that happened much too quickly.

Anyhow, looking forward to WE OWN THE NIGHT to see how they compare.

very well made film, but too predictable to be more successful. the period sets, costumes and acting were all superb. unfortunately, i couldn't get the "living for the city" track from new jack city out of my head throughout most of the film. that is until the glorious pick for a closing track. one of my favourite songs of all time used appropriately gave me quite the rush.

yea i watched the dvd screener like 3 days ago, i remember they had it up on tpb with a tag like "american gangster: not a fake" i didnt think it was rela cause it wasnt set to come out for another week, but sure enough, its a real copy...pretty good quality too..

but yeah, i thought it was a good movie, it wasnt what i expected it to be, like it only tells 6 years of franks life. also ive heard that frank lucas was practically a sociopath and killed a lot of ppl. denzel didnt portray how violent frank lucas really was.

anyone notice rza's wu-tang tat? or the nynex styicker on one of the pay phones? i heard you can see a boom mic in 2 shots, but i didnt see those. id give it an 7/10

Yeah I noticed the tat. I didn't notice the boom mics, but I watched it on my laptop.

I was surprised there were no modern rap tracks in the film.

is it against forum rules to tell a brother where he could peep dat?

no... peep it at the Magic Johnson AMC Theatre on 124th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. Get the real Frank Lucas experience or GTFO ..

denzel is the lone bright spot of this plodding, predictable, stinking piece of refuse. normally im not deceived by previews :(

oh, and im not gay ;) but common is absurdly good looking

It's not so much that it wasn't a good movie. It's just that the whole "rise and fall of a drug kingpin" gangster movie has been done before (done to death IMO) and this one offered very little that was new.
I don't think there's been a great movie about low-level drug dealing yet. "50 Pills" is the best one I've seen so far.

It might be predictable because it, like most of the other "rise and fall of a kingpin" movies is based on a true story. Generally, things don't end well for kingpins and mob bosses.

Also, I kind of agree that in the rush to portray him as an anti-hero they glossed over some of the really scumbaggy things he did. Should have went full bore a la Goodfellas and shown all the horrible shit. People would probably like the film better.

As it was I enjoyed it a lot. 3/5.

Please tell me your joking. That was one of the biggest pieces of crap I have ever seen.

I enjoyed it. It was pretty close to my experience with slinging. More than, say, Spun.
Mind you, I had a strict rule about only slinging to middle class types. The only unrealistic aspect of "50 Pills" was that no one ever tried to haggle with the guy or ask about price breaks.
