Fentanyl-laced drugs blamed for Detroit-area death rise
Associated Press
January 25, 2007
DETROIT Wayne County health officials blame a rise in drug deaths on the spread of heroin and cocaine laced with a prescription drug.
The county reported 542 people died from drugs between January first and December 10th. That's a 19-percent increase over 2005.
One-hundred-seventy eight of the 2006 deaths were attributed to the drug fentanyl. The opiate is cheaper than heroin and more potent than morphine -- making it an appealing additive for heroin distributors.
Fentanyl can cause rapid respiratory failure.
Authorities say many drug users take the laced drug without knowing it and there are dealers who don't realize they're selling it.
Members of a county group formed to deal with the problem met this month with the White House drug czar.
