DEA says 8-figure money trail leads to Middle East
TAMPA - Could profits from synthetic drugs be funding terrorist organizations overseas?
According to the DEA, it's highly suspicious, but "there's no smoking gun."
In a recent report released by the DEA, the feds write, "Much of the proceeds of the sale of designer synthetic drugs from China flow to Middle eastern countries such as Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan."
That's millions of dollars. The feds cited one case out of Alabama where at least $35,000,000 was wired to Yemen.
Many of these countries are known areas of operation for terrorist organizations.
Locally, those drugs are still being sold in the back rooms of certain stores.
"We see it being sold in some of the privately owned convenient marts." Larry McKinnon, Spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office, said.
It's not clear where the money from drug sales in the Bay Area is going, but McKinnon says it's not uncommon for drug money to be pushed out of the country.
"When somebody makes a large amount of money, they have to have a place to put it. Often times, they funnel it overseas, and of course that money is used to structure illegal activity." McKinnon said.
