Then shortly after.. https://arstechnica.com/information...tsapp-and-oculus-are-down-heres-what-we-know/

Now it's been down for like 6 hours. I work in tech, there is literally nothing that should keep a large company like that with the resources and employees they do down for this long.

It's either a serious hack and internal panic/conflict, internal sabotage/strike, or... they are busy destroying evidence. Either that or all their SRE need fired.

Lol, maybe some uber powerful Russian mob botnet was contracted to ddos their dns servers specifically today to make sure as many people as possible are googling "facebook" today.

Facebook ain't losing all this money for some whistleblower interview that people forget about instantly and don't remove their accounts over. Likely just a series of fuck ups and unfortunate circumstances.

I mean it's still down. It does not take this long to even bring up an entirely new cluster of services, based on a backup. Everything is codified these days, and I've actually intrrviewed with their SRE team so I know thr tools they are using are common ones.. . Something is wrong with their dns server, but that should be even simpler to fix, even if it meant using a different one...

I would trust that not losing millions of dollars per minute superseeds almost any other reason to keep it all offline.

What's more bizarre is that some genius decided to couple Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram so tightly together. Seems like basic stuff to me, but OK.

Yeah according to an anonymous employee that is not the case and they all operate independently

heres some more technical details, i guess it makes sense but also sounds like bullshit. can't be fixed remotely? having people go to datacenters? 90% certain they are hosted on AWS, not some datacenter (they were when I interviewed with them years ago)

facebook is not hosted on aws.

Something must be..

Hi,

I just wanted to follow-up with you and see if you had a chance to consider the Enterprise Infra role I mentioned in my previous InMail. To give you more information, I have provided some information below about the work we are doing. Whenever you have a chance, please let me know if you are interested or not. If you are, let me know when you are free for a brief chat about details of the role and I will reach out. Have a great day!

What does the Enterprise Engineering team do?

Enterprise Engineering at Facebook builds infrastructure and tooling to support a very broad set of functions and customers within the organization. Some of the customers are Oculus, Workplace and WhatsApp, Sales, Finance, Community Operations, and others.

The team provides infrastructure from physical servers to virtualization to containers and cluster/application scheduling systems, many of which are hosted on our public cloud provider partners such as Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform. This team also provides internal networking for more than 200 offices globally along with multiple database and data analytics systems. They develop tools for monitoring, automation and self-service.

Keith

Anyway Keith high five at Enterprise Engineering for secretly pretending to suck while all along colluding with a large agenda to totally nose dive fb in the ground.

Unfortunately, I think we will all still be addicted.

I'd have responded to your message, but I got distracted by a notification 😅

So all that infrastructure and.. no redundancy? No fault tolerance ? Smh.

out of context, i'm not sure what that email is about, who it is from and who it is to?

It's from a recruiter with them. I guess I was probably wrong that it was all hosted there sounds like something went wrong with their on prem stuff.

ok. thanks.

facebook is a large, complex organization with many aspects so i am not surprised to learn that some of their stuff is on aws. but their core facebook stuff is defo. not hosted on aws.

People were saying it was related to the The Pandora Papers earlier today, after I checked the internet having realised whatsapp was down. I've uninstalled it. There was a live testimony people had been waiting for on youtube.

Facebook has already had zuckerbore testify in the senate (?), and we surely all saw what a cluster fuck that was, and how he was hiding behind a legal team of dirty secrets, knowing fine well he was getting too big, and people were greedy for his power.

If, say Mark from facebook or his affiliates were involved in the revealing's of the testimony, conspiring in tax evasion, which rich people frequently do, or thought they might/could be; then there is absolutely no reason why they wouldn't shut off their DNS/servers to cut off access and purge some silly instant messages/phones, or internal documents. 90% of the Senate won't understand and they know they are on thin ice but could easily skate to the moon.

Hypothetically, that is a very real possibility and you may well never know, which of course does not de facto make you right.

Let's not go conspiracy route

So let's not invalidate peoples valid, hypothetical suppositions or tell people what not to discuss, perhaps, or further invalidate the term conspiracy to the point of cliché and invalidation. It's very stifling and irritating.

All cards are on the table, and we at least have some idea of their deck and the hands they play.

the act of conspiring:
  1. an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot.
  2. a combination of persons for a secret, unlawful, or evil purpose:He joined the conspiracy to overthrow the government.
  3. Law. an agreement by two or more persons to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act.
  4. any concurrence in action; combination in bringing about a given result.

A lot of high ranking people, some of which who can and do exert control, and their taxation methods, are clearly about to be or are in the process of being ousted. That counts as a conspiracy. Conspiracy has literally been committed and revealed.

Whether this is related to facebooks servers going down, or anybody from facebook is implicated, remains to be seen; but to revoke that possibility, is foolish.

You're right, apologies.
Sometimes I similarly get annoyed.

I get you, no need to apologise. The UFO guy in S&T with his contradictory & ever expanding stories used to annoy me (no offence if you're still here, LU). But now I sort of think, well, maybe he had mental health problems, or what the fuck do I know anyway?

I'm just really on a little one man mission to try and make this that's a conspiracy thing as farcical and irrelevant as the way, in which it is as of late, ever increasingly used around me. Like.... it's kind of an inflicted conspiracy of its very own really, isn't it? To disregard as conspiracy as conspiracy is very, very convenient. If you were to be privy to... conspiracy. If you conspired. It's brilliant really.

Personally though I'm just annoyed because two people have called me a conspiracy theorist for the first time in my life this year. One was an actual conspiracy theorist who had to get the vaccine because he works in a hospital and was bitter, and the other was my sister who called me and said "I think you should reconsider getting the vaccine, lots of people at work have already been 'double jabbed' and a lot of them have covid right now and are getting really really sick".

"Erm, so they got it and now they're sick. Sorry to hear about them, but that's good enough for me then, consider that 'reconsidered', thanks".

"I think you're being a conspiracy theorist"

Then I basically said some of the stuff that I just said to you.

Little personal vendetta going on here.

I should really talk to my shrink about this.

(joke there, don't have one).

then i was thinking, maybe it was fb being a manipulative borderline jackass cunt, and just going offline for a full work day to just show ppl how bored they would be without it to combat the effects of this interview? is it controlled by a child? did they think we would get that bored? or am i going on a tangent here

Technology is technology... it is man made and bound to fail at times regardless of any/all resources in place to make this not so.

i heard a total rumor that a dev introduced a bug that had a timer on it a month ago or something

LOL what a "whistleblower" saying things we already knew as far as I understand?

To me it seems she's just arguing for more censorship to "keep it a positive place". Fuck this.
