Exercise spread over the day

I quit the gym for this month (maybe next too) because I have a lot going on and don't have enough time. I don't want to lose my shape and am planing on doing some short bodyweight routine but since I really really don't have much time left I thought I could do some push ups like on the arms of my chair while I study (without stopping the study, that is). I can't get all sweaty so I just do a couple of series and rest. Then at another time of day I do another 12. Do you think this will do any good? Or do I need to really break my sweat to give those muscles a good maintenance?
 
Sounds good to me :) Something is better than nothing.
 
I sometimes break up my exercise into many parts over the day, and I tend to feel really good.
When I was writing my dissertation, I would take 2 minutes at the beginning of each hour, and do one set of something.
By the end of the day, I had done 3 sets each of at least 3 exercises - usually pushups, squats, and something for my core, but sometimes dips (between 2 chairs) or chinups. Very helpful.
If you do many sets of pushups throughout the day, one at a time, nearly your whole upper body will maintain or even gain strength.
 
my mate is ripped to shreds and he swears by doing 10 push ups, 10 sit ups and 10 10 pull ups upon waking and before bed everyday.
 
It depends on what you're looking for.

If you want to burn calories, it doesn't matter. It's totally healthy, too, and you can probably maintain strength this way. However, you will not build up resistance to lactic acid if you spread out your exercise. Lactic acid is what causes the burning sensation from intense exercise, and there's no way (that I know of) to build up a tolerance that doesn't involve simply going to that point again and again.

I think it'll work fine for you, though.
 
Spreading your exercise out across the day is good - it's like manual labour that way.

If you do, say, an hour's hard exercise - it's very stressful on your body, even with warm up and cool down - it's better to do some exercise at the beginning of the day, do some more during the day, before lunch and then again before dinner(around 5 is perfect time for straining your body, if you've got up at 6/7am).

Some of her workouts are pretty fucking intense, and they dont require a whole lot of gear, and are like 20 mins long or less.

Im at an age where I cant afford to stop. I sit at a computer for most of my day. I refuse to let my chi dwindle.

I wake up early and spend a few minutes breathing, then stretching. I do some quick bodyweight exercises to get my blood flowing, caffinate, then hit the gym. After that I am at a desk, but ive devised quite a few ways to keep myself pretty pumped up all day. You just have to be clever if you have an office job. Some examples of things I do are holding stances for a minute here or there in a bathroom stall, and practicing active meditative breathing. If there is a big side stairwell, I might pop in there 2-3 times a day and practice shadow boxing some random box or bullshit hanging from the ceiling. When I head out to get lunch, I drop and do like 50 knuckle pushups on the nastiest piece of sidewalk I can find. Couple times a week, I duck into a nearby raquetball/basketball court, and I practice reps of light punches into the poles. Lately though, there has been packs of teenagers there, so I have been jabbing/kicking telephone poles down side-streets you might see nothing but some old lady walking a purse dog. Later in the day once the building is clearing out, its easy to whip out something like 50 crunches in an area no one is looking around, or maybe do 10 hindu/mantis pushups and 10 burpees or whatever, even just stretch if nothing else. Balance on one leg, do some yoga poses, etc. When I get home if Im not real tired and lazy sometimes I practice spinning a staff, or maybe do 100 crunches real quick.

If you think you are "too tired" to step away from whatever youre doing every 90 minutes and do some random crunches, pushups, stance/position holding, or even just stretching and deep breathing, then its because you arent doing this. The less you use your body, the less useable it becomes.

Im considering new careers without so much sitting. Not sure if I can do this past 40.
 
^ i like your style man.

my exercise is like riding the bike to work and back home (or elswhere). occasionally i do pushups and pullups and i juggle a lot. all with no stress and no plan. i do not get pumped from it, but it keeps me in shape very well.
 
I usually have a lot of cashing shifts. I tend to do a lot of stretching, lunges and squat positions while I have no customers in my lane. I like to do pushups on the side of the register, too.

Standing all day is a killer on your knees and feet (especially since I can't wear my Vibrams [they "are not appropriate footwear for work]) so even just stretching and doing pushups at your station can keep you moving throughout the day.
 
This is a great idea. Frequent exercise boosts your basal metabolic rate more effectively than the same amount of exercise condensed into one continuous workout.

I know this reads like a tabloid but it also improves circulation, helps alleviate stress and provides more mental clarity for most people.

Anecdotally, I've found people are able to put more effort in (more reps or more weight) when it's broken up into short bursts throughout the day.
