heh, heh.
when commenting on the anaesthetic properties of diethyl ether, one of my profs said something about a "two-week hangover". i know nothing about this, but it might possibly happen when you do a huge amount of it, enough to lose consciousness.
anyway, i've done ether but not chloroform.
ether is fun. it feels kind of like a mixture of alcohol and K. you feel kind of numb and very fucked up. and get slurred speech.
it is not, however, like fear and loathing in las vegas. you cannot merely throw some ether on a rag, huff it, and be fucked up for hours. you have to do a rather large amount to feel anything (i went through 10 mL before anything happened), and it smells horrible. it also doesn't last very long, 10 minutes at the most, and you have to keep doing more to stay messed up. oh, and it gets very cold as you do it, as it evaporates.
ether is toxic and you should definitely not huff large amounts, although it's fairly safe as far as solvents go (which is not very safe..). it *does* have activity on actual receptors, rather than just destroying your brain by depriving it of oxygen.
if you're even considering doing ether you MUST be aware of how to handle it safely. it's an extremely dangerous substance. it MUST be stored in a cool, dark place, with NO exposure to any open flame or spark. the vapor is heavier than air and has been known to travel along the floor in an invisible cloud until it is ignited; so a spark on the other side of the room can cause an explosion. on exposure to UV light or oxygen, ether peroxidizes, and the peroxides are even more dangerous than ether itself because they can explode spontaneously. peroxide formation is especially common with the last tiny amount of ether left in a bottle, so an empty ether bottle may in fact be an extremely hazardous glass jar (amber glass, always!) of ethyl peroxide...
if you already know how to handle it, fine, but be careful with it. there are more fun drugs that don't explode.
chloroform: obviously i *could* do chloroform too, but i don't. i generally don't like the idea of anything with chlorine (except K!), and it's fairly toxic. as far as i know, it doesn't fuck you up, just makes you pass out, so i'm not really interested in doing it.
other solvents
acetone: my crackhead used to huff acetone. apparently it got him very fucked up. no doubt it killed large amounts of his brain as well. and he was a bored kid in a small town at the time, so i don't think anyone has any need to huff acetone.
toluene: last winter some homeless people who huffed toluene were always on the corner a couple blocks from me. there were always empty bottles of Toluol in the gutter and stuff. these people were *very fucked up* and drew crosses and hearts on walls.. one of the crosses said ELVIS under it. really.
that should be enough to convince you not to do toluene.
anyway overall i dont think solvents are a great idea.. except possibly for ether.. although even then you probably shouldnt do much.
