What are the law governing under-cover cops at raves "entrapping" you?
Most times you can pick them out and stay well away. But for those that are too 'chopped' and have one slide along side for a friendly chap, then what protection do you have?

The simplest method I know is to not buy and/or sell any illegal drugs while at an event. However if caught doing whatever then keep your mouth shut and wait for your lawyer.

"Have you ever danced with teh devil in the pale moon light?"
"Well I have actually and it turns out that the devil is a real top bloke."

I can see it now:
*Situation: Cop, wearing rugby jacket while looking uncomfortable and pretending to drink beer, slides up to raver, who has obviously taken enough chemicals to power a small nation*
Cop: Gday mate... hows your night?
Raver: Hey! I havent seen you in ages!
Cop: Weve never met before... I need to score some exstasacy. (yes, they've said it to me)
Raver: MAN! Im fucking CHOPPED!!
Cop: Do you know where I can get any? Cmon mate.
Raver: What was I saying? Oh yeh... my cats soooooooo fluffy
Cop: *pissed off ny now* Forget it mate... see ya round
Raver: Hey! I havent seen you in ages!
*Cop stalks away*

hehe, the practical side of the situation is that if your an end user, the cops are generally uninterested unless you annoy them. Avoid buying/selling in public places and you're likely to avoid any hassles.
As to entrapment, the High Court largely decided the issue in this case: JOHN ANTHONY RIDGEWAY v. THE QUEEN (1995) 129 ALR 41 (1995) 69 ALJR 484.
It basically states that there is no substantive defence of entrapment recognised in australia. You can't go to court and simply claim that you were entraped and hope to get off. If a police officer misrepresents himself by claiming he isn't a police officer, the most likely outcome is that both you and he are in breach of the law (but you're going to have a hard time getting the DPP to prosecute a police officer).
There is some possibility that entrapment situations can be used to stop the admission of some evidence. This is only where public policy reasons are compelling enough to a judge to warrant the removal of evidence. I doubt in the above situation the court would find any public policy reason compelling enough to help. If you've got the time and inclination, the above case is a good read in this area.

*Situation: 3:00am; same Cop, stripped down to ACDC t-shirt because of heat, now drinking water out of thirst (not giving a thought to the fact that this is what everyone else is drinking), talks to 'speed dancer' (one who never stops his hyperactive dancing [no sarcasm!]), and stops him to ask him 'friendly questions'.
COP: So what are you on tonight man?
DANCER: FUCKIN GREAT BEATS, HUH?
COP: *recognising signs of speed, as taught during briefing, and improvising to relate to target* Youre on the whizzer, arent you? Having a good whizz around?
DANCER: Yeh man...*recognising cop, and having previously recognised another cop*...I got them from that bloke *the other cop, deciding to fuck with first cop's head* over there... he said he was a cop but hes on the task force and on the take... i dunno - just go ask him for something.
COP: *recognising supervisor being named as drug dealer* Thanks mate.
*Cop walks off, wondering when his supervisor was let in on their meth business*

What can I say? I just hate (most... you know the ones I mean) the fuckers.
*shrug*

*giggles @ jakoz* ..... thanx, for that laugh!!
anywayz, just to recap on pundi, entrapment is VERY, VERY difficult to prove or argue, basically impossible. so my advice is don't ever get into a situation where you have to rely on the defence.

Thanks for the info guys and gals.
No to take anything away from Jakoz but I've been at a party and seen a cop ask a few people for stuff. Normally you would pick them out however this was a cop that was little chick who was dress for the part(ex-raver one might assume), and she was talking to mainly guys. Whether these guys were soften by her looks or just alittle "chopped" I don't know entirely.
--Just a funny anecdote--
It was funny once at a dance party in Brisbane the same night as the Ekka show holiday. GOing to the rave myself I was conservatively dressed (compared to the airbourne dancers dress code). As I was sitting outside cooling off I overheard a passing group of people, their dialog:
p1: Hey what should we do tonight?
p2: Dunno...what's this on here?
p1: It's a rave I think
p3: What's a rave?
p1: It's where they get a bunch of bands to play hey.
I was beside myself. hehehe
