I signed up for the Beta a while back, got an email this week with a code to make an account and test out the game this weekend. Not sure if it's an open Beta or if it's only cause I signed up a couple months ago - Anyway, I installed and logged in today and to be honest I'm sort of disappointed.

I was a world of warcraft kid back in the day, and I actually re subscribed recently. Though It only took me a month to get bored with the latest expansion, and I only log on to PVP for maybe an hour or two every couple days at this point. I was REALLY hoping that ESO would FINALLY be a legit competitor... Turns out just like every other MMO released in the last 10 years that was supposed to be the new WoW, it was over hyped.

I don't understand... Does WoW own the rights to the entire concept of how the game works? In my opinion the only way a new MMO will be worth playing is if it has a user interface and mechanics similar to that of WoW, if not similar then better but nothing better has been invented yet as far as I know.

Anyway, I can't really say much about ESO other than I'm disappointed since I accepted the non disclosure agreement to get access to the beta. (yeah it probably wouldn't be a big deal to talk about it here, but it COULD be and COULD land me with some serious fuckin penalties, not risking it.) I've only actually given it like an hour and haven't even made it to a multiplayer part of the world yet, so maybe I just need to give it another shot. I'll report back if my opinion changes at all.

In the mean time, I think the email mentioned something about more access codes being available so maybe go check out the ESO website if anybody is interested. The current beta ends tomorrow or monday i think.

Did you ever think that maybe the reason you don't like anything but WoW is because you have played so much WoW?

The interface and most elements of the game would certainly be considered Blizzard's intellectual property in a lawsuit.

I found more value in free to play MMOs than I did in any subscription model games but I haven't played any of them in a long time (laptop can't support them and the Alienware is on its last legs). You might explore the F2P model though. Rappelz and Flyff were two great examples. I don't think I spent any money on either of them and I still got enjoyment out of them.

I figured out that the main reason i didn't really like ESO a whole lot is because I'm playing on a computer. I have only ever played elder scrolls games on an xbox, so maybe next time the beta is open if I have the $ I'll try to hook up an xbox controller to my macbook and give it another shot. The interface is exactly how it was on xbox, but for PC. That's sort of shitty in my opinion.

Blizzard games are iterated on and polished to near perfection. It'd be tough to compete with any of their products head-on.

I haven't played ESO, but I wasn't too excited when it was announced. MMOs are humongous undertakings. It's an incredible feat just to get the technology alone working smoothly, and then you got to worry about making it fun and presentable on top of that. The odds are against the developer, even if they're a Bethesda/Zenimax company.

^^ Breach of non disclosure agreement. But whatever, I can say a little bit i guess. Not like I'm posting hella screenshots or anything.

But I will say this... Think oblivion... with other real people/characters running around in the world instead of only NPCS. You can group with said people in order to do quests and presumably instances and PVP as well, I didn't get the chance to see any though. Besides just the typical attack/hold down for power attack - There is also 5 slots for spells and abilities that are bound to 1-5 on your keyboard. Abilities that are learned and unlocked through skill points from leveling up. Each class has specializations, with each specialization having different abilities you can put points in to.

Otherwise it's the same as Oblivion/Skyrim.

Once I got to the point where I had abilities to bind to number keys, I did start to like the game more. I will definitely be giving it more chances in future beta tests before making any decisions about buying it or not.

The Elder Scrolls series always pretty much sucked up until Oblivion IMO, I was never able to get into them especially the time commitment... Taking that experience and putting it into an online format sounds like a recipe for disaster.

They need to reduce the monthly fee, firstly. I actually prefer a monthly fee to weed out all the baddies and spammers, as well as getting rid of free-to-play elements which I HATE TO DEATH. But needs to be a lot less, like $10 for 3 months, plus the fee for buying the game.

The day PVP was announced, was the day I knew this was going to be a flop. It is not open-world PVP. It does not have that risk element a PVP server on WoW does for example. If you choose one race, you can not explore other races' areas nor engage them in combat, unless they flag themselves as available or you are on the PVP continent/zone...already a failure, before it is even launched.

Congratulations!

You now have access to The Elder Scrolls® Online BETA!

Thank you,
