A schoolboy who wrote and directed an anti-drugs film died after taking ecstasy "because he heard it was a laugh", an inquest was told yesterday.

Ben Hennessy, 15, lost consciousness after "bombing" up to four and a half ecstasy tablets with a friend, only a week after the film was first screened.

Paramedics found him in the garden of his grandparents' home in St Albans, Herts, in July sweating and shouting incomprehensibly. He died later in hospital.

He had taken up to two tablets with a friend the previous evening at a nightclub. They had been crushed into a fine powder and wrapped in a cigarette paper to form the "bomb", which he then swallowed. He took a further two and a half tablets the next day.

Ben had previously directed a short film called Mixing It, a cautionary tale of a youngster who collapses and dies after mixing drugs.

It was written with friends at Townsend Church of England School, St Albans, as part of a Government-funded initiative to educate children about the dangers of drugs.

He did most of the directing and was cameraman but did not appear in the film. The week before he died Ben had attended the first screening at a cinema in Hatfield, Herts, with his mother, Shirley.

Although the film was designed to be used by agencies such as the police and social services, Hertfordshire county council was considering using it across the county's schools.

The inquest was told that Ben had a temperature of 42C, compared with a normal body temperature of 37C, when he arrived at hospital.

His internal organs were unable to cope and he began suffering fits and heart failure. Doctors were unable to save him and he died from cardio-respiratory arrest.

The friend with whom he shared the ecstasy, who cannot be named, told the inquest they had taken the drug because "it was a laugh. We had heard that other people had taken them and we heard it was a laugh and so we thought we would take them."

Other schoolfriends said they were aware of what Ben was doing in July but said they had kept quiet because he did not want to get into trouble with his mother.

Dr Nathaniel Carey, a Home Office pathologist, found two paper wraps in Ben's body. Toxicology tests showed traces of the designer amphetamines that make up ecstasy and traces of cannabis were also found. The pathologist said Ben had been a novice concerning ecstasy.

Ecstasy abuse was a "game of Russian roulette" and Ben had made it more dangerous by crushing the drug into powder so it was absorbed more easily.

After the hearing, Shirley Bullen, Ben's mother, said she was confused by the stories surrounding his death and was sure he had never tried hard drugs before.

"There have been so many different stories. I don't understand it any more."

Edward Thomas, the coroner, recorded a verdict of accidental death.

And was ecstacy the only thing in his system? How about his hydration levels? The puritie of the ecstacy? Previous medical conditions? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Ok we all know that bombing makes it hit you faster, but how the fuck does it make taking pills more dangerous?

how do you die from 2 e pills? mabye he was allergic? ive taken WAY more than that and ive seen so many people who have that have had no problems.

something isnt being told here....

stupid kid tried it for his first time and it fucked him because he probably didn't drink enough water. Dumbass.

Darkmoon, shut up. It was stupid but the poor kid is dead now when he didnt have to be. It could've been you who was misinformed and didnt take precautions and you'd be dead right now.

Sometimes I think bluelighters are oblivious that when people DIE from drugs they are REAL people, and parents now have to grieve over their dead children.

^^^
I disagree. I think that Darkmoonlight brought up a valid point.

If the young boy had created a film about "harm reduction" he would have been "educated" about what not to do, and what to avoid. AND he would be alive today.

It's sad. Yet, another victim of the War on Drugs that didn't have to be. :|

yup, it's unfortunate when anyone dies, particularly when they're young and could still accomplish a lot.. however, if abstinence is being pushed as your only option, that doesn't leave much room for education on reducing risk.. if you're told the only safe option is nothing at all, then psychologically that creates the perception that there's no difference between taking 1/2 a pill or 4 and 1/2...

with the mindset encouraged by the war on drugs, once you've violated its taboos it doesn't matter how cautious or careful you are, you're still doing something "wrong" so the inclination is to throw all caution to the wind and get as messed up as possible.. all use is considered abuse, so why not abuse? it's the same thinking that, in the US, renders DARE graduates more likely to use hard street drugs like cocaine and heroin and see less of a difference between them and softer drugs like marijuana.. since they're taught all drugs are evil anyways.

Excellent comment, Brian.

I love how it gets blown out of proportion. Yeah, like 1 out of every seventh(or is it sixth) person dies from ecstacy. propaganda tactics...

good comments though

It sounds suspiciously like PMA to me what with the high temperatures after only 4 pills.

^ A LOOOOOOOT more. Unfortunetly the general public doesnt realize that.

Its rather rare someone dies from a dose that low. Im suspecting he was on some other medications, or doing something very stupid while under the influence. Perhaps he even had a rouge pill with some deadly contraindication. Regardless, its extremely extremely rare for someone to DIE from a dose that low.

This article sucks for the following reason (excluding the appeals to amoral principles and sympathies for sonless mommies)

they say this:

Ben Hennessy, 15, lost consciousness after "bombing" up to four and a half ecstasy tablets with a friend, only a week after the film was first screened.

and then say this:

He had taken up to two tablets with a friend the previous evening at a nightclub. They had been crushed into a fine powder and wrapped in a cigarette paper to form the "bomb", which he then swallowed. He took a further two and a half tablets the next day.

So his death was from a damned dose that covered a 20+ hour period? Thats a bit of misinformation if u ask me. Whats the limit then? Do u accumulate all the pills someone has ever eaten when they die from two? That diddnt make any sense to me. He died from two and a half tablets of (alleged) MDMA, not from four and a half.

and throwing the tidbit about cannabis was in there just for the association.

i also guarantee you they are not including the entire toxology report. I dont understand how a dose of under 500mg (assuming they were average sized pills) could kill someone without some sort of bad interaction with another drug.

sexual you can dir from just taking a half of a pill, as stated above elses where what other meds was this kid on, what kinda health was he ijn(bad heart, high blood presure), what was the pill cut with( dxm, pma) there could be a thousand combanations that cause this unfortuante accident sympthy to his family.

The article says he took two pills one night, then an additional 2.5 pills the next day. The description sounds like a classic overdose/heatstroke death. At that dose it would be very unusual if there were no complicating factors such as other drugs.

It's pretty tragic, all the more so because he was not supposed to be another "dumb kid" but educated in these matters.

However, I think this line (if true) sums up how much he knew and thought about it:

"because he heard it was a laugh",

:(

Thanks :)

No matter what was in the pill (and I agree that it sounds like something else other than MDMA), if he would have been educated in harm reduction, he would have had a test kit and known what the score was.

Harm Reduction > Abstinence fueled by fear
