Ecstacy is SO last year: Alcohol is the new drug of the Millennium?

I read someone this week make the statement that drug use in general is on a backslide with the community at large. They contested that its no longer cool (if it ever was) and that alcohol, and having properly mixed cocktails and lucsious wines and beers from smaller overseas boutique vineyards and breweries, is the new fashion that should see us through the next few years.

Do you agree? Are we over seeing monged kids in clubs becoming progressively more stupid as a night wears on, and whatever drug they happen to be on wear them out? Do we yearn again for the danger that alcohol brings (violence, liver damage and everything that goes with it), rather than the safety of a hundred smiling, stupefied faces staring back at us?

Is it better to grab an hour of intelligent conversation from someone in a bar before they get too drunk at the start of a night, than to have to wait all night and most of the next day for a recovery to find someone that can string two words together, once they come down?

I love alcohol and I enjoy certain drugs, although not at the level I could sustain a few years back. An alcohol revival would suit me fine. How about you?

Cant we do both?
Who cares what is the "In" thing at the moment.
When you feel like drinking, then drink. Same goes for the anything else.
Its like my man said,...

Didn't Chief Wiggum say that?

And yeah, I highly doubt ecstacy will ever go "out of fashion" just like alcohol never will.

Hardicus, you're right.
Doh!
Hibbert snaps Wigums undies after he says that.
Shoulda thought of that before you posted dumbass!
Shaddup.

Anything can be good, its all up to the user.

The point is, do you feel as though drug use lately, in particular Ecstacy, is seen as less fashionable than it has been? I would argue yes.

Who cares? Those who, for many various reason, care about fashion (believe it or not, some on this board do, including those of us in Marketing, Advertising and anything else that takes a keen interest in "what's hot or not").

I kind of agree. In Brisbane at least, compared to 2000 when I would have made an educated guess and said that at most clubs and raves around 80% of people were on speed or e (including moi heh). People used to pay out severely on the VB drinking boys at the bar at raves and one of my favourite clubs closed down, one of the reasons was because the bars were always empty (goddamn water drinking eccy heads ;)).

Anyway, NOW, everytime I go to a dance club or a rave people are drinking - beer, vodka, those vodka/bacardi cooler drinks, its fairly obvious, because bars are packed compared to a few years ago.

I think party drugs, while they will definitely always be around and there will always be a market for them, kind of peaked around 2-3 years ago and its declined a bit since.

i dun think that there is a drop in use of designer drugs. i think both alcohol and designer drug consumption has gone up together. many people are taking both alkie and stuff together.

over the last 6 months or so, i have seen a great increase in drinkers at clubs, i never use to mix alchohol with substances, but now i do, its much more fun!

Red wine, open fire, good cheese and intelligent conversation is just so much more civilised than being off your tits, IMO. And hey, there's something to be said about puking in the gutter.

Here I was thinking mine was a solitary descent into alcholism... Turns out I am among freinds.

"Hey punks, I was into alchohol back when it was 90% ethanol and you brewed it yourself from potatoes... Now even highschool kids are doing it. Fricken newbie pussies."

my understanding was that ecstasy use was the only drug on the rise despite general use going down. however among me n my friends it's gone right down.

i think that a few years ago all the trendy types were going to raves and so took the drug that seemed to go with it. now a whole generation have gotten over their e honeymoon and are back where they started w/ comfy old alcy.

too bad i dont actually like alchohol unless i'm already drunk.... :/

I dont see a decrease in ecstasy use at all.. maybe a decrease amongst people I know but thats just coz they've done it now and moved onto other things. What I see an increase in is the amount of who we'd generally consider as 'clubbers' at the places that we go. The real impact I find is that the 'rave scene' is getting rather popular at the moment. So the events that everyone used to go to, that tended to only have your average raver pillheads, have filled up with you average clubbing drunks aswell. The thing is that those people who are drinking seem to also end up having pills aswell, its just that I generally find them harder to notice than your hardcore 'I just dropped 4 pills in 20mins' piller. :)

I think most people do move on from the party drugs tho.. but to me thats obvious. Why did you start taking drugs in the first place? Most likely coz they were something new and diffrent.. but now you've done them they arent so exciting so you move on from that phase and back to whats considered socially acceptable by the general public.. hence back to alcohol.

I stopped drinking heavily for a good year. Now I could think of nothing better than to have a few beers at the pub with a few friends. Its just how things work I reckon.

stace.

Yep, for sheer convenience factor alcohol wins hands down. Sometimes it's nice to be able to go up to a bar in the middle of a club and purchase your drugs in measured (and flavoured) doses, and then consume them in full view of the public. Illicits are just a hassle sometimes, with sneaking off to the toilet or running out to the car or something.

The main difference is that illicits are usually a means to an end - you take them to get an effect. But with alcohol, it can be about the flavours, the smells, and just generally consuming a drink for the enjoyment of it. One drink won't get you all that pissed, but plenty of people only have one glass of wine or something. When was the last time anyone ate 1/16th of a pill because they liked the taste? :)

Sometimes you feel like a good dose of MDMA... nothing too intense, just bit to slide into a elegant blissful state.

Sometimes you feel like a good dose of redwine... for the same reason as above.

I still love all of my drugs, but I am not in the whirlwind of my honey moon. I am more reserved about drugs, as are the people around me. Perhaps thats why ecstasy is out of fashion, because I don't see it and don't want it as much as I used to. MDMA is something you do once every four months. Where as alcohol is something you do once a week, perhaps even more. 8)

Though with the younger crowd, the drugs are still as rampant as they ever where. ;)
