The Backstory

Mother 3 is the sequel to EarthBound (an epic Super Nintendo RPG released in 1995) which was in development for 12 years before it was released in Japan in April 2006.

It soon became clear that Nintendo of America was uninterested in localizing the game, so in November 2006 the fans took matters into their own hands with the Do it Yourself Devotion project.

For two years a team of translators and hackers worked to produce an in-depth, professional translation and localization of MOTHER 3. In August 2007 the team began blogging about their progress, attracting the attention of the gaming industry, media, and more than half a million unique visitors.

On October 17, 2008, version 1.0 of the fan translation was released.

Crazy times.

Yep yep, I know there are some fans on BL so check this out!!!

I was gonna start a thread about this myself! I loved earthbound when I first played as a kid, and have been watching this project for a long time. I just started playing the translation and you would think It was done by NOA themselves, the hackers really kept the magic of EB. Have you seen the fan made strategy guide? Throw in the scratch and sniff cards and it would be perfect. I already preordered mine.

ahaha OMG!!!

I remember the official earthbound players guide for the SNES, those scratch and sniff cards were great!

ya man, this is my favorite game ever made, hands down. i've been waiting years for this patch to come out, they did a great job, I just started playing earlier tonight and I can't believe how similiar it is to the original earthbound, I love it!

=D

wow i havent thought of this series in so long...i mean they even have some of the characters in SSB, but you never really hear about mother you know? so the translation is pretty good?

^The dedication of some people to translating otherwise unavailable games for the English speaking world is really incredible.

Before alot of the Final Fantasy re-releases (2, 3, 5 come to mind), that was the only way they could be played. Actually there are a ton of great rpg's only available as fansub.

I've heard good things about this. Do I have to play the previous two to "get it" or can I just jump straight in?

The original Mother is annoying, and IMO, not worth playing. Earthbound is epic, and shouldn't be missed, under any circumstances. I'm almost inclined to tell you to play it first, though the two games aren't terribly dependent on each other-- some characters and concepts come back from Earthbound.

I got my Japanese rom patched. The Hot Tub's Hot, the Wine Coolers are Cool... Its Hammer Time!

It's not a true sequel so you should be able to jump right in, but you'll appreciatte more if you've played EB.

BTW, whats up with the title "Mother", thats just a horrable title, to me it will always be EB2. I know thats the series name in Japan, but.... akk.

If your considering playing this fan translation of Mother3 aka EarthBound2, I strongly suggest you play the first Earthbound for SNES get a emulator and a rom sit down play the game, learn it, live it, love it and breath it, then sit back and start on Earthbound2

I'm about a quarter done with it, I think I shall take my time with this classic.

I wish they would have kept the same characters and the focus of the story the same.... whatever happened to pokey? :D

Fuck that mushroom scratch and sniff, pissed me off everytime I smelled it. haha

This EB game is amazing, its actully pretty hard compared to EB from SNES, but I love that they incorporated old characters/sounds/music into mother3.

I can still remember that smell, I "smell" it everytime I think about earthbound.

I havent made it past Chap. 1 in M3 yet, strapped for time.

I mean I really hope giggas somehow comes back at the end of the story :D
