E-prescriptions coming soon for addictive drugs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. drug regulators are close to allowing doctors to electronically prescribe potentially abusive medications like painkillers, rather than requiring written orders, a Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman said on Thursday.

A new rule allowing the change is expected to be made public soon, said administration spokeswoman Rogene Waite.

"We are close to having a regulation on e-prescribing controlled substances published," Waite told Reuters.

She could not say when it would be announced.

While the move could make it easier for doctors and patients to manage their prescriptions, recent studies have found few doctor's offices have adopted electronic medical systems.

Unlike most prescription medications, those with high potential for abuse face a variety of restrictions depending on their level of risk.

Some medications that treat attention deficit disorder, some painkillers and other drugs that are considered highly abusive at present must be sold with a written prescription.

Refill orders for less risky drugs, including other painkillers and some sleep medicines, can be phoned into a pharmacy after the doctor's initial written order.

Under the new rule, doctors could prescribe the restricted medicines electronically, but it was not clear which drugs would apply. Waite said she could not give more details until the rule was published.

A New England Journal of Medicine study published earlier this week found just 4 percent of physicians have "fully functional" computerized health records systems while another 13 percent have more basic systems.

If this e-prescription program allowed 1 person who legitimately needs pain medicine to get it, even if 1000000 people abused it, I still think it would be worth it. If things were my way, you could buy pretty much any medication over-the-counter; and people would be taught to not be fucking stupid about it. And if they were, then they would have to bear the consequences....not innocent people who need medication.

There's just something about pharmacists that gets my goat SO BAD. I just want to scream into their face "I KNOW MORE ABOUT CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY THAN YOU, MR. PHARMACIST SIR! PLEASE STEP ASIDE!"

Oh I don't know - I love collecting my script and getting the 'Patient confidentiality? Wha? ? ?' woman...

If you could just sign at the bottom... AND SIGN AGAIN HERE BECAUSE ITS A CONTROLLED DRUG...I REPEAT, A CONTROLLED DRUG

all this in a town with < 3000 people and a good chance of someone in the queue recongnising me.

Though, I just *LOVE* it when she runs through my script and notices something is missing...

Oh.. the valium <looks around the pharmacy>

...valium, valium valium...

Aha! Valium! (@95Db, +/- 1Db).

yay! it was a pain in the ass to have to go get a new script every month for amphetamines from the doctor..

sounds nice for drug users

but its kinda messed up in a way, the govt wants people to get hooked on all the legal drugs versus the illegal ones.

is that gonna happen? Seems to be the tone of the comments, but for hte life of me, still seems you need to see the doc the 1st time, and have some contact subsequently - I'm blind and not seeing a single hole in that relative to now..

2c-e would do a far better job (though a lot less gentile...) for helping people break addictions. Salvia would as well.
