And it's old school! %)
Hmm, I have a can of pure diethyl ether (I think 500 ml) standing in the basement for ~6 years, forgot about it and never opened it. Maybe you could estimate how dangerous these explosions get ?

i have another question: if I tried to buy ether at the pharmacy (have no idea if they sell it though), what could I say i need it for? i mean, what's it's common usage beside getting high and as a anesthetic?
First off, don't even touch it before assessing the situation. If peroxides are present in large quantities, you could loose a finger or two by touching the cap. These peroxides form over time when just about any ether is exposed to air. Diethyl ether is no exception. Stabilizing agents (inhibitors or "preservatives" like BHT which I mentioned in first reply) will prevent this, or at least slow it down a lot.
No offence to BL, but I don't think this is the right crowd to answer such a question; you may want to look elsewhere. Seriously, it may be harmless or a touch-sensitive firebomb that requires the Bomb Squad to safely dispose of. There are a few key questions that you'll need to answer, whomever you ask:
- Is there a white crust around the cap? If there is, you're looking straight at explosive peroxides.
- Is an inhibitor present? Look on the can to see if anything besides diethyl ether is listed. The two common impurities in diethyl ether are water and ethanol; anything else will likely be an inhibitor.
- How well is it sealed? Factory seal or did you close it last yourself?
I wish I could be of more help, but I'm not a lab safety officer. All I can really say is, this might be serious.
Thanks for the clarification, if this is no joke I'm pretty fucked. I will drive there tomorrow morning and watch if it is still there. If I remember correctly it is stowed in a plastic bag so I won't be able to see, if peroxide residues are present without touching the bag. What would be the safest elimination method, that does not involve the bomb squad ? Could I take a bucket and fill it with sand to put the bag with the can into it and then drive it to a pharmacy or something ?
@Ksa
How am I supposed to do anything without moving the bottle ?![]()

Ether will not be sold at a pharmacy.
yeah i see
i'll go to a pharmacy and see if they have it though, i think it's worth a try lol
Don't. Ether is a prototypical gabaergic which hasn't been in widespread use for many decades, if not a century. I'd bet its at least moderately restricted. You'd probably be labeled a drug seeker, accordingly.
they don't carry diethyl ether at pharmacies
in fact you don't buy diethyl ether at all I think without a license...
if anyone got any info on using this as an oral sedative I'd appreciate it, only tried inhaling it.
