Not really a bunch. Basically 5 from the street and 5 from a pharmacy. I wanted to see if pills from the pharmacy had any control as far as how much they weigh. It does not appear that they do. The 5 from the street that i think are not totally legit weighed between 375mg and 410mg none of them at any consistency these were "bars" from the imprint they are knock offs the ana is a LITTLE too small and i thinks its just too square and not defined enough to be real i could be wrong . The antibiotics from the pharmacy 3 weighed in general about 1010mg but 2 of the 5 weighted 1040 and 1035 each. It looks like the pharmaceutical company aims for 1010 but they are probably okay with going slightly over as its antibiotics at a very high dose. Anyone else ever weighed all of ur pills from the pharmacy to see if they all weigh generally the same? sorry if should utfse but im not finding stuff. there is a whole lot of post with mg and pills

When you say weigh generally the same what do you mean?

I don't think there's a set weight for pills. I mean a manufacturer's pills would all weigh the same. But branded xanax bought on the street should weigh the same as branded xanax from the pharmacy. Generic version don't have to weigh the same I guess.

I have weighed pills but it was mainly to see how much the ratio of active ingredients to inactive ingredients was.

This is normal, remember that the majority of the pill is just binder and not actives. I would assume they're stricter about how much medication is pressed into each pill/capsule. I was actually just weighing some of my 100mg tramadol capsules to see if they were pure tramadol but the powder varied from 220mgs - 240mgs. I remember noticing a small difference when weighing Etilaam brand Etizolam tablets a while back as well. Of course if your dealing with counterfeits there's gonna be even less consistency.

I have heard that generics in the U.S. have a 20% leeway either way for how much active ingredient goes into a medication as per FDA requirements. Can anyone verify this?

Not quite. A 20% difference in bioequivalence is considered acceptable. Bioequivalence is more than just how much of an active ingredient is present, it's an overall sum of how effective the generic medication is compared to the brand name. To sum it up a drug is bioequivalent when a generic is absorbed at the same rate and amount as their counterpart at a specific dose. A 20% difference in this number is allowed and considered insignificant (not sure I agree with that). I've not seen any figures pertaining to how much actives are allowed to vary. I'd imagine the bioequivalence is the main factor rather than actives content.

Take this into consideration the sample pills i was weighing were antibiotics. generic.
bactrim total active ingredients 960mg. weight of pills 1010, 1010, 1009, 1040. 1035 mg each. Bactrim are made with 5% filler at least with this company from the small sample i have. i think and a 2% variable is probably acceptable but it might not be if those pills weighed in at 950. but since anything that was off was overweight ill bet the companies sort out the over/under weight pills during manufacturing and they have an acceptable tolerance range with 1010 being the minimum wight to get the equivalent of 960mg of drug. so here we are talking about pills active around 1 gram with a 20-30mg variance not really a big deal. Ill need to test some more pills from a pharmacy that are active at much smaller doses to see if those are more controlled in their manufacture.
