when i take em [benzos] it takes away social anxiety but gives me energy not a chill ed out feeling where i just wanna watch tv . my prob is that im to racing. when ive been precribed opiates or have had codeine it makes me settle & wanna be alone to watch tv by myself which is what i want. time alone to take care of myself. but i know thats not a practical med cuz they're addictive.

its like they say alcohol calms ya down but it does the oposite to me it makes me wanna go out & not wanna go to bed.

any suggestions of meds that could help me. I just wanna be peaceful to sit my myself.

maybe anti-pyshotic?
ive been told that ssris calm ya down & take away mania but im finding that hard to beleive. I just wanna be chilled & be ablle to relaxd & wind down in peace & be settled enough to atleast get through watching a movie.

might add ive started smokin cigs again & ive always been prone to be a chain smoke. if i didnt smoke do u think benzod may be better then?
cuz they dont actualy make me calmer they make me more restless. its just a habbit i dont even enjoy....

is this the correct forum for discussions on medications for mental health probs?
not looking to get high just want a longer attention span & to be able to sit still.
maybe its mild add as well as anxiety/depression

First off, benzos are just as addictive - if not more so than opiates. Benzo withdrawal lasts months and can cause seizures and possibly death, whereas opiate withdrawal is a more concentrated and painful WD (3-14 days) depending on the opiate/benzo level of addiction.

In terms of overall enjoyment, opiates are a far superior choice to benzos in my opinion. Benzos leave me feeling numbed to life, and don't provide nearly the level of euphoria or relaxation that opiates cause. Also, benzos (especially the longer lasting ones like clonazepam) leave me feeling weird the next day: restless, pissed off, aggressive, and generally not good.

Smoking cigarettes have always made my benzo experience better. They go very well together. Not smoking on benzos would probably not lead to a better experience.

What exactly is your question? If it is "do benzos calm ya down" then I would say yes, for sure.

If, as you said "I just wanna be chilled & be ablle to relaxd & wind down in peace & be settled enough to atleast get through watching a movie." I would choose opiates over benzos any day. I prefer an opiate high with perhaps a little benzos thrown in to enhance the opiate high.

It is really all a matter of personal preference.

Does a bear shit in the woods?!?!

It doesn't really calm you down as it reduces anxiety. You can still feel stressed but not anxious. I hope that makes sense.

I'm not an expert but from my experience not all so-called benzos are the same. I've had stuff with a "-azapine" suffix that, when I took more than two, gave me the most awful leg jitters worse than withdrawal from opiates.
Be careful.

Be careful.

Benzos typically end in -pam or -lam; for example xanax is alprazolam, klonopin is clonazapam, valium is diazapam, ativan is lorazapam.

Something like "mirtazapine", which you may have mistaken for a benzo, is in fact not a benzo at all.

Valium makes me drowsy & sleepy. Xanax calms me down, relaxes me & makes falling asleep alot easier but I get an edgy feeling the next day after waking up. I havent touched benzos in 2 years.

I'm gonna change your title as it is a little misleading and I think you'll get more responses with a more telling title.

Can you please be more specific as to what exactly your problem is and what you are trying to accomplish? What exactly are you trying to medicate/ do you think you need to medicate?

If benzo's make you hyperactive then I could suggest zopiclone or a more sedating benzo like flunitrazepam. The'll knock you on your arse, but beware that they're every bit as addictive as other benzo type drugs.

More 'sedating' alcoholic beverages (ones which lie heavier on your stomach so you dont get drink as quickly) such as red wine, a bloody mary, or a really fine whisky all have the effect of making me tired.

Exercising will make you be relieved to sit down and be still for a moment, and help with sleep.

A large meal will make me want to curl up into a ball and not move.

Kava Kava, passionflower, marijuana (indica only strains if possible), valerian root and other herbal sedatives may help; and especially Kratom, which is like an opiate but with nowhere near as bad withdrawals of side effects.

Believe me: I'm a professional relaxer!

You'll be sitting there with unblinking eyes on the TV eating coco pops and drinking tabs and smoking ciggies before you can say The Big Lebowski!!! HAppy Trails!!!

Try indica cannabis if your into that thing, but really, you can't just have a drug make it all happen for you. Stay away from benzos and AP's.

""""Smoking cigarettes have always made my benzo experience better. They go very well together. Not smoking on benzos would probably not lead to a better experience.""""

^^This might not be strictly true, as I have read that smoking on benzos can diminish the effects noticeably; not ALOT though, and who doesnt enjoy a ciggy with their DOC?

hydroxyzine works really well for me. 50mg-75mg on a long day... It is rather amazing how effective it is in relief of my anxiety. There are plenty of studies to show its effectiveness compared to benzodiazepines.

Gabapentin can be enormously helpful (I've heard pregabalin is better but I haven't tried it). It mimics the action of GABA so it has a lot in common with benzos despite lacking any noticeable side effects.

Don't go down the antipsychotic route. The side effects are awful and are just as pronounced in the "atypical" generation as in the old, despite the lies of drug companies.

Hydroxyzine is a good alternative to the benzos and a lot of doctors are happy to prescribe it, some even more happy than they are to prescribe benzos.

I don't think flunitrazepam will help him,on the other side i think that it will make him more energative.I say this because this is the way that flunit. acts to me.(Other benzo's too,but flunitrazepam a lot more than the others.).But every drug doesn't acts the same to everyone,so..I just wanna say that if you try flun., be careful and take a little in the beginning and see how it goes,so..that's only my opinion..

I'll explain my situation. About a week ago I was in minor withdrawal which intensified a depressive phase I was in. Ended up coming home from school and going into an outpatient treatment program for opiate addiction. Ever since I've been home I haven't smoked any weed. I've been smoking at least once daily for the past 1 1/2 or so years. It relaxes my body and calms my mind, and allows me to get to sleep. Since I've been home the depression switched over to a manic state. This happened the last time I went off weed for a week. I've dealt with these kind of states much of my life.

I've had heightened anxiety, feeling restless, euphoric, energetic, giddy, can't sleep much. Racing thoughts increased motivation feelings of elation. I have recently reached the conclusion I might have some kind of minor bipolar like thing going on with a very intense physical anxiety response to go along with that. I've dealt with severe social anxiety my whole life too that's the main anxiety issue I would say. The anxiety drives me crazy sometimes, the worst symptom is having to piss every 10 minutes sometimes. Weed calms me down but I have to stay off that for a while coz of that treatment program I'm in. Last night I slept about 6 hours, took 3 hours or so to get to sleep. The night before, slept 3 hours. Gonna try kava tonight and see how that helps. Benzos provide me with much relief, as do opiates (obviously, that's how I got addicted to them) but they're not an option now. I have to clean up my act. A few days before I ended up leaving school I was stickin needles in my arm shooting dilaudids.

I've read that cannabis has provided relief to people with a bipolar disorder conditon going on. I certainly believe that now. I wouldn't say my case is severe but the anxiety is what really makes my life hell and there's a reason I got into drugs to self-medicate myself. I sure hope this kava works.

I'm going to a psychiatrist soon I'm pretty interested in Lyrica is sounds promising. I don't want a bunch of soul-crushing drugs thrown at me I really don't want my mind to be dulled down.

I might be down to try an SSRI again, I was on one of those in the past but discontinued it eventually. I was taking 20 mg citalopram a day. It made me feel kind of... weird sometimes. Not sure how to explain it. Kind of restless? Did help with anxiety... a little. It wasn't enough. Sometimes I noticed a really calm heightened mood feeling but not like the manic sort of state I've been in lately. Sure isn't good for the sex drive though, I didn't like that.

clonidine ,propranolol (sp?), hydroxyzine, or for something OTC- doxylamine succinate is said to be as sedating as phenobarbital (dont know if thats good or bad but just something i think i saw on wiki)
ALL very easy to obtain.

EDIT: there are more but i just made a list off the top of the dome.
